I would like to know why California has such a high standard , nazi control over emissions on motorcycles but yet they never smog inspect them.? How can California place standards on emissions if they dont test them? You can buy a brand new bike in Cali and NEVER have to get it smog tested....BUT YET THERE ARE STANDARDS!!!! Cant wait till I move out of this nazi state.

Thats like saying:

"Drugs are illegal but we wont arrest/charge/summons you if you have them".

"Driving without a license is illegal but we are not gonna ask you for it when we pull you over"

Vinny, don't say it too loud. We don't need the legislators getting any more ideas about regulating motorcycles, requiring checks everyother year like cars. I think the rational for not requiring checks is that the bikes are built to meet a stringent standard so the airs is clean, and most people don't ride enough to put on enough miles over the life of the bike to make much difference in air quality. IMHO.

Vinny,
That kind of thing finally got me out of CA after 58 years. The state has lots to offer, but the PC BS does get tiresome after a while. At least you got the 'Strom before you had to put a catalytic converter on it. Hang in there pal.
Regards,
Mike

Yes you can... buy it in CA and register it in AZ (county of Maricopa, basically Phoenix) where they *do* emission testing on motorcycles. As a CA/AZ snowbird I learned this this hard way but thankfully it only took one lesson. :(

I ment buy it in Cali and register it in Cali. I NEVER had to take my bikes to get smogged, But yet there is an emissions standard they will never check on my bikes once I own them.

Another thing that burns me is they lean out our bikes so bad they cough to pass emissions but yet that ghetto pimped cutlass burning 30 quarts of oil for every refill of the gas tank blowing inpenatrable blue smoke out the tail pipe is allowed to pass. God forbid a small 2 cylinder passes.

Vinny, go easy, man. I spent all my money on my new Strom, so the car's gonna have to suffer for a bit.

They have been talking about testing for years, but it just has never come to pass YET. I literally pray daily that it will never come to pass.

Simple reason they do not test .
There are not enough mechanics to fix 9 out of ten cars that will fail. It sounds good to have high standards when it comes to elections but like many things talks cheap action costs.

I was in the states about 8 years ago and saw a program on a machine they had that tested the exhaust as a car waited to enter the freeway .It did it without you even knowing ! It even took photo's of number plates so they could send out fines/ or get you to have your car checked .I think the got scared when only three cars passed the test in several hours.

Ah, but Graham, you are mistaken about the intent of the smog check program. Clean air is not the intent. Paying more money to the state and more money to licensed smog stations, who pay the state (and kick-backs to politicians) for that license is the intent. It's all about paying more taxes, they just cloth in a different manner.

I could write a book (or anyone else for that matter) about the fraudulent smog check program here in the People's Republik of Commiefornia. And, the same applies on the federal level too. Remember, it's all for the children. So, it has to be good right?????

Some of you guys kill me! You must be too young to remember what it was like before Ca. cracked down on emissions. L.A. wasn't the smog capital of the country for no reason. As for bitching about not testing bikes, watch what you wish for you just might get it.

I disagree manufacturers being forced to meet stricter emission standards have done nothing but improved motorcycles. They run better last longer need less service than ever before. Meeting emissions means that they have to run perfectly, if they stumble and miss they will never pass an emissions test.
My 78 GS1000E made 67 HP Mt Dl1000 107 HP, I'd rather have a 32 bit Microprocessor controlling the spark and fuel. Points and mechanical spark advances were real sloppy. Carburetors changed the mixture as the barometric pressure changed. The mixture was very sloppy and the only way to get good overall performance was to purposely set them up a little rich. Cold running and starts were horribly messy.

If a modern engine has issues, stumbling, dead miss, popping, rough running etc... there is something wrong. If your dealer doesn't have tools like exhaust gas analyzers or dynos, they can only throw parts at your bike until they accidentally fix the real problem. There aren't a lot of people that understand how an engine works and can feel what the problem is. If they are any good at tuning they will have the tools to do it right.

What is so cool is a Yosh box or PC III or Tecillusion and you can fine tune your engine any way you want. When the electric solenoid valve train comes into play it will allow tuning an engine to do anything.
