Hi Guys,
I just bought a new/used (2K miles) 2005 DL1000. I took it for a couple of short rides with the stock pipes and it ran great. I recently installed a new set of 2 brothers cans and a K&N air filter. It now stumbles between 1st and 2nd gear pretty badly, kind of missing and surging. I did install the extensions on the TBS nipples and noticed one of the caps were missing. I rode again to make sure this was not the problem. It still runs like crap with both vaccum nipples securely plugged. I haven't built the throttle body sync tool yet to check sync. I did however remove the secondaries and noticed some more usable power when not coughing and missing. I know you veterans probably have the answer but I am frustrated and the 60 degree days here in CT are coming to an end. Does anyone live near Northwest Connecticut that has a Yosh box they would be wiling to help me with? I would gladly pay you to help remap my bike? Any other suggestions or remedies would be greatly appreciated! If necessary I can buy a PCIIIUSB?

Pull the K&N first and replace with stock. See if that makes any difference. You are probably going to need to remap with both the upgrades. Was the ECU replaced? My 05 had the surge problem, and I had to have the ECU replaced under recall.

Hi,
Thanks for the tip on the ECU recall, I did manage to build and use with limited success a sync tool. I got them within a half inch at idle, 2, 4 and 5K RPM. I just took a spin around the long block and it stumbles bad without fail at 2500 and 3500 RPM. You wouldent happen to know the recall # for the ECU would you? Thanks again.

Nah, sorry I don't know the #, but your dealership should be able to help you with that.

Has ZERO, NADDA, ZILCH to do with the ECM being bad. You are running much much much too lean. If it wasn't bad enough that you put on new exhausts, but you also put in a K&N filter. You are now giving your poor Strom so much air, that it can't provide enough fuel. A TB synch isn't going to solve anything, you either need to remap with a Yosh, get a Techlusion DFO or go with a PCIII. Your problems will be solved!!!!;) The dealer may not honor any recall with all the mods that you have done, if you were to try going that route. But, like you said...the Strom ran perfectly fine until you did exhaust/filter mod. That should answer your question right there!

Hi Brian,
Thanks for the tip! I am sure you are correct, it acts fuel starved when I romp on it, what is your opinion of the Techlusion product? It seems fairly simple and is definetly cheaper? It sounds like the logical solution to my problem as I dont know anyone in CT or MA that either has the knowledge/equipment to do the Yosh fix? There is a PCIII Map on the power commander website with hardware very close to mine but its again a shot in the dark? Thanks very much for taking time to help a newb out.

No problemo...we are glad to have ya here!!!!:D
I would go the DFO route if I were you. They are an excellent product for what they do......which is add fuel where you need it! Install is simple, they are very tiny compared to a PCIII, and they require no special map or programs to work. Turn the adjustment pots where you want them, and add fuel where you need it.
My 1000 runs very well with my Leo Vince exhausts, but I "do" have a remapped ECM done with a Yosh box. I am seriously considering getting a DFO, to further fine tune my bike.

Hi Brian,
Very cool stuff, I followed all of the posts by Dale, you and other guys on the DL1000 lean problems and various solutions. I just ordered the custom one from holeshot.com and cant wait to put it in. The only pisser is I just put everything back together, I had the entire front end off yesterday , oh well. It will definetly be faster now that I know where all of the rivets, screws and rubber assholes are. I will let you know how the DFO works out when I get it installed. The bike is pretty much unrideable as it is. Great forum and even better people here. I just need to find all of the New England Strommers so we terrorize en`masse. Best Regards Brian and thanks for getting me on track.

Sweet....let me know how that works for you! Dale is awesome to work with and has GREAT knowledge/experience and products. If he endorses something, you can count on it to be good.
The install doesn't require more than your seat to be off...."I think"? So when you get the DFO, plug and GO PLAY!! Please let us know how it works for you. Don't race cans sound sweet on a twin!!!!!!!

Hi,
Yes, I had to comment so others may enjoy the melodious sound of the V-Twin through race cans, I would not have it any other way! They are a tad loud but not obnoxiously so. Judy at Dobreck overnighted my DFI module and I should have it in my hot little paws this afternoon!~ Cant wait to give it the fuel it so richly deserves, to hell with gas mileage over performance, If I wanted mileage I would have bought a Vespa
