View Full Version : Engine Swap?

I have been told that the same 1000cc basic twin on the Strom is used in many other Suzukis, but in a different state of tune. I have also heard that some of these engines get a lot more power than the one in the Strom.

If this is true, had anyone looked into and engine swap? Perhaps out of a wrecked bike?

I have a sidecar on my Strom, so the additional power would be useful

thanks, greg

There is a guy on the other forum planning to do it with a DL to SV 1000 engine. Looks interesting.

The Sv engine will have more power but it will be at a higher RPM. The DL engine will smoother and probably pull a side car better than an SV engine.

I think you are wasting time with idea of an engine swap . I agree with sporthog93 . . You have increased the load and wind resistance so you need to increase the power and torque ,you do this by changing the gearing.Try changing sprokets ,go two teeth smaller at front or 6 teeth bigger at rear . It's cheap to do and will improve the things .

Ihad already gone one smaller in the front.

I just purchased a new chain and both sprockets (went to a 530 size chain), got a 16/43 combination . Installing in a week or so.

Gearing doesn't really increase power or torque, although I agree it will help ridability. For me, the issue is the big jump from 5th to 6th.

I think I will build my next SC on a ZX 14, solve all these issues.

Changing gearing doesn't change power or torque at the crank but it sure does at the rear wheel.

The engine is from the TL1000, which was designed as a race bike. It is only used currently in the DL and SV1000. The DL is tuned for more mid-range performance with different valves and cams (and associated hardware). The gearing is the same for all those bikes. This is something that Suzuki has been rightly criticized for doing, or not doing as the case may be.
