I tried posting this earlier, but I don't see if. Hopefully a dupe won't show up.

I can't determine the right way to tighten up the mirrors so that that don't pivot in. I took the plastic cap off, and I see a nut that looks about 8mm, looks soft like brass, and is attached to a bolt that appear to have a groove cut in it so it almost has a flat screw head.

I can't get any socket I have to grab the bolt. Nothing in the toolkit, nothing in any of my socket sets. There's just no room between the nut and the housing to get a socket in there.

I tried to get the whole mirror off, but the attachment (14mm I think) to the clamp on the handlebars is taking more force to loosen that I want to put in until I know what I'm doing.

If anyone could help, I would appreciate it. This seems so stupid, but it really is a safety problem, the mirrors end up showing my chest.

The users guide doesn't mention the mirrors, but I'm looking around to see if there's anything anywhere else.

This is the exact same mirror as on my old sv650,bottom line is there is NO way to tighten it up, I had it replaced under warranty
My new strom also has one loose mirror,looks like replacement time

The mirror issue has baffled me for years. I have never owned a bike that I didn't have the loose mirror problem.

Why can't the manufactures make a mirror that isn't a pain in the ass to adjust and keep tight.

It's a no-win situation. You could put some lock tite on the threads(I think blue-whatever the stuff is that doesn't seal as tight).

I plan on putting Napoleon bar-end mirrors on mine if the mirrors become a nuisance. I have a pair leftover from my SV. They're great and you can always see behind you (no more having to move around due to the view of elbows - at least on the SV, anyway).

I bought some EMGOs like many Strom owners. Way better than the OEM ones IMO. They are cheap, like $12 ea IIRC.

I just got a call from my local shop telling me my mirrors are in.
Those stock one's suck. They make you choose between seeing behind you (Is that a cop?) or seeing the next lane (obvious first choice). I rolled mine sideways to get a better field of vision. That need ends tonight.

The Parts Unlimited catalog has a bunch of better mirror options in it.

OK - here's an out of the box solution. I've tried a few different type of mirrors (including bar ends) - and I finally got brave. I installed some stock Yamaha FZ mirrors on the Vstrom (yikes!). After I got over the shock of taking half my fairing apart and drilling holes in the fairing (and the price of the FZ mirrors - I think about $80 a piece) - I could have saved myself a ton of agony and time if I just did it when it struck me (which was the 1st time I saw a Yamaha FZ and said - gosh - that looks like it would work on a Vstrom). Anyway - they look pretty awsome and there is no better mirror (I've tried and sold them all).
