View Full Version : Funky behaviour at around 2500 RPM

Hello all !

I just bought a 1000, still in break-in, and it's been a couple of times that the bike jerks while in traffic and the engine revs at around 2500 RPM. As soon as the tach reaches 3000 RPM, the problem vanishes.

It acts like there is a hole in the power band (BIG hole !). Kinda remind me of clutch slippage, but I don't think it is.

I will talk about it to my mechanic at my 1000 km service, but I was wondering if any of you experienced this.

Thanks !

We know you are a new guy, welcome to the board, so we'll go easy on you.

USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION!!!!!

OK, now that I have that out of my system, the stumble, stutter is pretty common on the 1000. Mine was pretty bad when I first got it. Now, at around 14,000 kms, its pretty darn good. One thing you should check is the idle speed. Too low an idle speed can cause stalling and stuttering any time the throttle is closed (stopping, shifting, etc). This is not likely to cause your 2500 rpm issue but it can be a problem. Other than that, ride it and enjoy it smooth out as the miles pile up. There are options for EFI tweaks to improve the lean stumble but I don't think, on a stock bike, its all that necessary on an '06. YMMV

If you are talking about a symptom some of us here refer to as a burp, I know exactly what you are talking about. My 06 has done it from time to time. It was quite concerning initially. After awhile though, I found it was only at 2800 rpm, usually on deceleration with no/light throttle, and usually in 3rd gear. As the bike was slowing or nearly stopped, it would feel like a lurch, but it was only the motor hiccuping. It never affected driveability. It never occurred on acceleration or cruise, and rarely in any other gear. If these are your symptoms, there is nothing wrong with your bike. You need to change the way you ride it.

This subject has been extensively discussed on this site. The reality is that this bike needs to be ridden at a higher rpm across the band than other V-twins, such as a HD, V-Star or Shadow. As alarming as it is to some people with other bikes, 3000 rpm and above is a totally reasonable engine speed for riding around town on the Vee. 4000 is even better. I don't know why anyone would do it at less. These motors are happiest when they are twisting. 3000+ plus rpm around town is smoother, offers awesome acceleration, greater engine braking, and better mileage. The absolute happy place for my 06 Vee is 4000 rpm. Smooth as a turbine at that speed, powerful and economical. So I try to keep it there as much as possible, whether in town or on the highway. It's great in town, and a perfect rpm for the 1000 on the highway. The bike will also smooth out as it gets miles on it.

Onre thing you can do is check your throttle body synch right away. I find that if my bike does do a rare burp or hiccup now, it is because I have carelessly let my rpm's slip in too high of a gear, or the TBS's need checking. I actually use that as a guage. If I get a burp, I do the adjustment and it is good to go for some time.

Oh dammit, sorry Heavy, I got wordy!

Well, thanks for the information, guys ! I'll try to keep the beast running at higher RPMs around town. It's true that the acceleration is pretty darn good on this bike !

Heavy, in the future, I will use the search function, I promess.

Learn to ride a twin the way it is suppose to be ridden... IN HIGHER Revs...

The higher the better. It aint no Hogley davidson that you can slog around.

The more you stay in the 4000 - 7500 RPM zone the better the MC likes it!

Mine runs good at any RPM, but you MUST sync the throttle bodies and get the Yosh box and set 1.5% on the low speed FI circuit.

I'd agree that the TB sync is a very good idea but I question the MUST on the Yosh tweak.

It IS NOT the nature of this engine to run that way at low RPM's. It can be a combination of things.....TB's need synched, and you need more fuel!!!!! These bikes are so damn choked from the factory, that it is insane. You need to get your computer remapped with a Yosh box, install a PCIII or a Techlusion digital fuel optimizer. My bike runs great at any RPM and in any gear. Don't let anyone tell you that it is the nature of this engine to run that way, and you need to let it rev. You can either live with it or do something about it....I chose to fix the issue. This is a real issue with this bike that is well documented, but it is well worth addressing. Some say that their bikes run good out of the box, but I know that they are still running too lean.

GIT ER DONE!!!!!!!

+1 for mah main man Big B.

Yosh Box - +1.5 on idle circuit. TBS IMMEDIATELY. Inspect/Adjust Idle speed to 1100-1200 RPM.

You will swear you are riding a different bike afterwards. Yoshing your bike may cost $30 - the TBS is free, just follow the directions here on the site. Trust me - it'll be the best $30 you EVER spent on your Strom.

BTW - Welcome to the site, and if I may add, excellent choice of motorcycle to purchase!! ;)

Well guys, I just left the bike to my dealer this morning for the 1000 km tune-up and winter storage. Since they go over everything on the bike at this tune-up, I will wait until next spring to see if the problem still occurs. If so, I'll do the TBS.

Thanks again !

Ride the bike. It'll really smooth out as time goes on. TBS is crucial though. The 06's don't seem to be as finicky as earlier models, although they are still probably a bit lean. They run better once you get some miles on them.
