View Full Version : Power Commander on the '06 DL 1000...advantages?

I have an '06 DL 1000. I read from previous posts that owners of older model DL 1000's felt it was a mandatory upgrade to smooth out the throttle response. I also read that the stock FI mapping is supposed to be better on newer bikes. I see that with the Power Commander or similar device you can enrichen the fuel/air mixture in certain RPM ranges (especially for people like me in California with the emissions stuff). But is that a $300 advantage?
What are the advantages of running the Power Commander on the '06 DL 1000 with the stock pipes?
On my bike I notice that as I start to crack open the throttle, the throttle doesn't increase with the smallest fraction of a turn that I can apply with my wrist. Basically I start rolling it on (like coming through a turn) with no response....then it kicks in with a bit of a jerk. I was reading that this is a trait of all motorcycle FI systems in that they cannot respond well to minute throttle input. Does the Powercommander solve this?

A PCIII or a remap of the FI system, is a VERY good idea in my opinion. We can tune up our Strom's to run pretty good, but they still need more fuel. I would rather go with a Techlusion DFO unit, instead of a PCIII. The DFO uses the stock map, but allows you too simply add fuel where you want it. The PCIII must have a custom map created, but allows you to play around more. I went the remapping route with a Yoshimura box, and am pretty pleased with the results. I run a Leo Vince exhaust system with my secondaries pulled out, and it runs pretty darn good.
If you are interested in the DFO route.... check out Holeshot.com and find the DL1000 section. Dale has developed a custom setting for his slip ons, that should work very well for our stock system, or ANY aftermarket cans.

So, funny that you bring this up. I have a 2004 DL 1000. I am currently in Geargia. I am trying to get the dealership here to re-map my bike to take out that same jerky acceleration and 4000 rpm hiccup. The dealership looked at me like I had two heads when I mentioned that this was a problem with the bikes. Their suggestion was that I put on a power commander for $300.00 and call it good. I would rather save the $300 bucks and just have it re-mapped, is this possible or am I hoping for to much?

Just don't take no for an answer! Being that you live in Cali, you might have a hard time finding a Yosh box. Might be good to post in the section for your region, and ask those guys if they know of a good dealer. Most dealers are pricks, and hate to admit that there is an issue with a bike. Just send them to this forum, and have them read a bit!!
If you are willing to spend $300....go for the Techlusion DFO unit, it is better than the PCIII in my opinion.

When I inquired about getting a remap shortly after I got the bike, my dealer told me that it can't be done as there is no access to the computer system. Although the bike runs really good right now, I'm not too concerned about it. But should that change in the future I'll need to find someone in the Lower Mainland who knows their way around this.

Mine ran pretty good for about the first 10k but then the wife and I took a trip fron Cali up to Jasper Canada and by the time we got back I could feel that things had deteriorated. I have a valve adjustment scheduled so I was trying to kill two birds with one credit card. I am worried about the dealer he has never worked on a V-strom. I guesse they are not that popular in the south. My problem is that I am not a tech guy, so I am a little out of my league. Great bike though hate to have it run bad.

WeThereYet,
slowly step away from the dealer! and the strom doesn't get hurt!
If your ever in the Everett area there's a shop just off of I-5, the sales manager there rides a strom with a TL motor in it, he knows about the fuel issues and has the equipment to deal with it.
if you want more info just send me a PM.

Thanks Bumblebee,
I've resigned myself to the fact I will have to travel if I ever need to deal with any FI issues. Have saved this thread and will PM.
$ 300 (and the equipment/knowledge) to get a bike running like it should be from the manufaturer? Guess I'm lucky, but I've never had any issues regarding glitches, or throttle response...just smooooth power at all rpms on my K5. Hope it stays that way, you guys are scaring me.
