Went out for a ride this afternoon. Just wanted to scrub in my new rear tire and see how the new rear shock spring felt. Got a gel seat to try out as well. So I headed into the Laurel Highlands for the afternoon. Had a good time. Got out alive. BTW, the Wilbers spring and gel seat both worked fine. Money well spent. Met a guy named Allan from Wash DC on a red Wee near Ligonier. Here's the pics:

How long into winter do you get to ride out there?

How long into winter do you get to ride out there?

I ride all winter. I just ride less :-)

Typically, it starts getting fairly cool in November (highs in the 40s) and we'll start seeing snow in the Pittsburgh area by mid-December. I generally wait until it warms into the upper 30s, then go out until almost dark. Hopefully the highs will be in the 40s somewhere. I don't have any electric clothing, but long underwear and some ski gear (fleece layer, gloves, neck warmer) keep me comfy.

Once it snows and the road crews throw salt all over the place, the riding season becomes hit or miss. I'll get out for a few hours a couple or three times a month from mid-December to mid-March when the roads aren't too crapped up and the temps are in the high 30s to low 50s.

I ski in the winter, so usually the days when it sucks to ski can be good days to ride (unless it's raining and 40).

I live in the Poratge area , not far from where you were.Looking to add to the Strom population of PA this spring , will have to look you up and hit some back roads.

Man, I don't know how we haven't crossed paths yet. Linn Run and the surrounding area is normal stomping ground.

Here's some pics of my ride this morning. Sorry about the lighting, but it was cloudy and flurrying the whole time. If we keep this up maybe we could map out the whole Laurel Highlands in pictures.
This is Tunnel Road, off of Rt.31 heading towards the turnpike. This bend leads to the next picture.

Linn Run Road. Last time I came through here in my truck there was a tree suspended about 7ft high across the road.

According to the hunter I was talking to, a trail he pointed at would take me down to "Tunnel Rd" near the turnpike.

Since you ride in the area, does Rock Run Rd run from Linn Run State Park and turn into Weaver Rd on the way back to Laurel Summit? Maybe it's closed or something. I couldn't find it on Saturday and ended up following Linn Run all the way out to 381. I was looking for a hard left to double back to Laurel Summit Rd.

Its gated off on both side. It is hard to find at the bottom, probably just a small path, but at the top of the hill it is a gravel road. If you ever have a Monday or Tuesday off we need to hook up for a ride.

I've put close to 1000 miles on the bike this month and hopefully more this weekend. Runs fine. The gel seat and rear shock spring have worked out great. New fork springs to be installed soon, perhaps this week. The bike is a keeper. Don't worry, I'll keep 'er busy exploring the back roads of PA, WV and OH...

Hey Garry, thanks for pointing out how interesting Felgar Rd. is, but you didn't mention that it dead ends, TWICE, so I had to fight my way in and back out. One way ended at the top of the hill in a giant muckhole, where logging is being done. The other way splits off and is flat, with a little mud, for a while, then basically drops off a cliff, in sight of the turnpike. The Wee is extremely muddy right now, like it should be.

I thought I did mention that it dead ends at a gas well and that I had to turn around and head back out the way I came in. I actually didn't make it to the gas well. I stopped to talk to a hunter in a clearing (the giant muck hole) and he told me my only way out was to turn around. I misread the map and hoped it would take me to/near Laurel Summit State Park.

I guess that's why they call it adventure touring.
