I picked up my V-Strom DL 1000 last night - put the first 25 miles on it during the ride home.

Sold my 98 KLR 650 to purchase this bike.

Ben riding for about 2 years after a 20 year break.

My name is Dan Burnett and I have been lurking on this board for a month or so. The board helped me to decide to purchase the V-Strom.

I noticed that during the ride home the bike coughed and sputtered under 4000 RPM when warm. Dies at stops on 4 occasions. I am going to give it time to see if it improves with miles - if not its back to the dealer for a check.

So far I am very happy with my purchase - the dealer (Good Times Motor Sports - Sacramento CA) was wonderful.

Just a note, I bought a Extenda Fenda from CaSportTouring.com but discovered the extension won't fit my 04. Must have a different front fender. Will call them today - I am sure they will help me out. By the way, CaSportTouring shipped the Extenda Fenda within a few days - the service was great.

I guess I will find out how they are with a return today.

Just thought I would take tis time to say HI and let you know that I will be around for a wile.

Take care all

Dan

Dan you must be a pretty easy going guy. If my DL650 sputterd, coughed and died out 4 diff times on my first ride I would have been back to that dealer in a heartbeat! I'd also save the kind words about the dealer until after you have approached the service department concerning your problem. Dan

After reading many posts on this site, I was prepared for the bike to run a little rough.

First thing I noticed was the idle speed is at 900 instead of the specification of 1100-1300 RPM.

I also have little faith that the dealer would have responded well - I assumed I would here something like "it only has 20 miles on it - give it a chance to break in and if there is still a problem, we'll take of it".

Since I intend to do most of the work on the bike myself (30 years experience as a factory trained Chrysler and Ford dealer technician), I will adjust the idle and put a few miles on it.

If it doesn't improve, I'll take it in for repair.

I figure the dealer is going to be there to handle major warranty repairs and some cosmetics.

The minor stuff would probably not be done well anyway.

The bike ran better after the first 20 miles and I think it will improve with time.

I agree that the bike runs lean from the factory and needs to be richened up a bit. Not sure the dealer will do this, so I may have to invest in some tools and remap the computer myself.

By the way, California Sport Touring sent me the wrong fender extender. I called them and they are sending me the correct one with return postage to send the wrong one back - mistakes happen.

Enjoy
