I'm looking for Step by Step instruction on installing a Stebel Air Horn on my 2005 Strom 1000. I know that there appears to be a good description at twistedthrottle but even that has some omissions that have me very apprehensive about tearing into my bike's electrical system. Anyone out there who can help me? I'm talking 'preschooler' level instructions. I am petrified that I'll mess it up and render my bike unrideable, which'd really bite because I use it virtually every day to get to and from work. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Not exactly what you asked for, but this should get you started. The install is on a DL650:

Hey, that's really helpful! Thanks!
Especially the link to the install kit. Hadn't seen that before and it looks great. This custom horn intall idea has gotten a little complicated but I'm hoping it'll be worth the effort. I 'beeped' at a careless lane changer (avoiding the tail end of a metro bus rather than slowing down and waiting his turn) in downtown seattle last night. I'm not sure he even heard me. Would've been nice to have had a little more 'oomph' for that encounter...

OK. The wiring kit looks great and the photos are helpful but what steps are required to get to the old horn and to fish the wires to where they need to be for the new horn? What parts of the plastic have to be removed and/or where can I get directions to do that? Really leary about dismantling my still fairly new ride... Thanks.

I just finished my install (with the wiring harness from Easternbeaver.com).
If you remove the 2 bolts from the side of the cowl you can swing the radiator forward a bit to get at the stock horn. You can simply pull the leads off and leave the stock horn in place. Then all you need to do is plug in the harness leads to the new horn. It'll be obvious which lead goes where when you see them.
I was able to fish the wire harness through the frame and zip tie it in place without removing the cowl. I mounted the relay by enlarging the hole in the relay tab a bit and bolting it using the existing bolt under the front of the seat.

I decided to put mine in a different location...
I tapped into the stock horn switch and added another switch so that I could turn the Stebel on/off (switch housing purchased from amotostuff.com). With the switch on, both horns blow, with it off it, just the stock horn.
I made the mounting bracket out of some bar stock and painted it black.

Go to easternbeaver.com, buy his wiring harness for the Stebel horn and do it. The hardest part was getting to the stock horn to wire the relay. Well, I also fabricated a mounting arm instead of buying one so that was fun... and getting those clips out of the fairing... pain in the a$$. But otherwise it was a breeze!

I saw a photo of the Stebel horn separated from the compressor. A piece of stiff plastic tubing was used to connect the two. The horn was aimed forward, and the compressor was in a convenient location for the wiring & relay.

I wimped out and got my mechanic to fit it at the 7k service. I have the H&B case bars so he fitted it sideways on the bottom bracket, horns facing the engine. Although it's niot upright like in the instructions, the horn openings are away from incoming debris and the drain tube flows freely into the belly pan.
So far it's working..... Photos later.
