Hi, after reading through the accessories threads I don't see any mention of Gearsack bags or racks? Are they not suitable for the V. I would prefer soft top and pannier bags, what are my options? I need to know what to ask the dealers to quote on before sending my bike in the crate.

Cheers

I have a set of mini-Gearsack throwover panniers from my KLR days that I sometimes use on my DL1000. I haven't tried any full size ones. The problems I see with the Gearsack stuff is that the ones I have seen in the shop haven't got an inside soft pad like the Nelson Riggs have. That means they would probably have to be mounted on a frame to stop them scuffing the Strom aluminium exhaust cover.

I recently purchased a set of Nelson Rigg panniers from http://www.amcmotorcycles.com.au/index.html. Goto the Luggage link.

The panniers were delivered very quickly, the price was reasonable A$213 with postage and these are very high quality saddle bags. I will eventually be buying a complete set of Nelson Rigg gear for my touring in the near future.

The Suzi dealer threw in a large Motodry tank magnetic bag which is not bad for a freebie, and a Ventura tail rack pack system. The rack is excellent, of solid construction and fits around the DL1000 tail mount seamlessly, but the pack is fairly lightweight of a reasonable manufacturing quality.

G'day Again Pil

The bags are RJays, only cheep $90 but are lasting really well, no fancy pockets and zips though, just one big hole... What I really like about them is they are semi firm, ie they hold their shape even when empty. and the role down top has be quite water resistant, better than zips I think.

The Rack is homemade kooz I'm a tight ass :D but it works well, the bags can't touch the bike on either side, its strong and comes on & off with just 4 bolts... and it cost about $15 :D

Helmet is a HJC Symex ... about $450 here I think, I got it though a mates, sister inlaws boyfriends dogs vet .. bla ...bla in NZ for about AU$300... top helmet, Ive used the BMW version and the Nolan and this one is by far the best, But it all comes down to the shape of ya pumpkin! I love it because I'm into photography, and I useto miss heaps of pics because I couldn't be bothered taking off my gloves helmet for a shot.
Now I'm a happy- 2wheeled-Snapper :P

Sy-Max ...same helmet I have and recommended to me by the Suzi dealer in Nowra, as the helmet is easy to take on and off when you have prescription glasses as I have. It is a good helmet but noisy. I can't remember what I paid for it from the dealer but it was no where near AU$450.

The pros are: Easy to take on and off with glasses. Lightweight and very comfortable even on very long trips. Well streamlined and resists buffeting even in strong side winds (handles the dreaded V-Strom buffeting fairly well).

The cons are: Fogs up very easily and the anti-misting doesn't work. I have to have the visor slightly open on most cold mornings and fully open when going up a hill on very cold mornings. Of course this is cold on the face and wouldn't be pleasant if somethng flew into your face at the time. Noisy as I said before.

I have found it too difficult to get enough info online for the panniers and more expensive storage systems, so to simplify the whole thing I have ordered the Ventura Rack and Touring Bag.

When I get to the big smoke next year I can visit a few shops to get an idea on other brands.
