Okay, so I realized I haven't taken a vacation all year, and I have three weeks still to burn. I am forcing myself to take off the first week of August, and my plans are to go on a riding vacation.
I am thinking about Sturgis since I have never been and I am constantly being asked by people I meet "have you been to Sturgis?" but I hate crowds and that may be a boring trip.
I have some friends that are going wheeling and riding in Colorado, but I would have to haul my V-Strom along with my trials and smaller d-sport machine out there. That could be a pain.
Another thought is heading out to the West Virginia area and playing along the Blue Ridge, etc.
So instead of continuing to ramble about what I could do, I am seeking advice from my fellow stromtroopers. What would you do? Remember, I am based out of Indiana. Let's hear it!

You know my vote! The Skyline/Blueridge ride is a blast. My only other suggestion would be a UP Michigan/Canada tour. Could be pretty nice this time of year.

Good God man! Head down to the Tri-State region (where VA, NC, WV come together). I live in Cleveland and usually meet an old buddy from Columbia, SC, in Beckley WV, and use it as a starting point (310 mi for me and 322 for him-- LOL). We head for Roanoke and then south or sometimes straight south from Beckley thru Bluefield and down to the Parkway. Zillions of super awesome roads. Maybe head west once you're into NC and hit the Smokies.
Whatever you do, get to a Borders or some other decent bookseller and pick up a Dellorme Atlas for each state you visit. Otherwise you WILL get lost/delayed/pissed off when your map lets you down and the road you thought was borderline Nirvana turns into a dirt/forest service road 20 miles from nowhere. Or maybe you'd like that, what with riding a V-Strom and all...

I just returned from W. Va. on the V-Strom and had a blast. Great roads and scenery, I traveled 1100 miles in 5 days. Next year our group is going to the Blueridge Parkway. I already have the route from Cincinnati and it will be about 250 mi. per day to cover the trip, again over 5 days. Everyone I have talked to highly recomends this destination. You could also head for Deal's Gap in the N.C./Tennessee area. I hear that makes an awesome trip as well.

Howboucha Stromtroopers!
It looks like the Deals Gap-Blue Ridge, West Virginia, ? route is what I plan on doing. I am leaving next Tuesday and will come back home when I am ready. I will load up my tent, minor camping gear, a few doolers and maybe a couple of different t-shirts and socks! No plans or actual destinations.
I am so looking forward to this trip. If anyone is going to be in that area next week and want to hook up to say heh! please send me an e-mail or call my cell (812) 236-3048.

I agree - the Skyline area is great. I live in the north-west edge of VA, and had allot of fun putting the first couple of thousand miles on my V-Strom here. Also, Deals Gap at Tapoco, NC is great. (call them at 800 889-5550, or read at www.dealsgap.com, or search for "tail of the dragon". I went there on my my first road trip, unfortunately on my way back to Black Rock Mountain State Park (camping there), some guy cut over in front of me in a truck. The V-Strom was totaled, and I've only got eight lives left!
