My brand new V-STROM 650 is going to arrive in a couple of weeks, maybe less.

It is my first bike...

Your going to have fun on the DL650. I'm sure the riding in Italy is going to be awesome. This weekend took my bike up the mountain ranges going to the ski mountain of Whistler British Columbia, this bike is fun in the corners.

If its your first bike take a riding course.

Ride fast but safe.

I know I have to learn before "really" riding, and I chose the DL 650 because it is considered right for a beginner.... is it??

You can obviously get in trouble with any size motorcycle if your not in control of it. I owned the DL1000 and am having a lot of fun on the 650.
The 650 has enough power and agility to get yourself in trouble.

Things to do to improve your skills:

Read books on improving your skills. Know your local Drivers Education and Training book thoroughly. The books usaully give you skills to practice. Find a empty parking lot to practice. Slow speed manuevers are just as important as riding fast. Understand the controls and capabalities of the bike. I like to practice hard braking and riding in small circles.

Definetly take a riders training course this way you will not start any bad habits.

Always ride with in your abilities. Do not try to keep up with more skilled riders. If a group says they are going to ride at a fast pace heed their warning.

Every year I try to pick up one more skill to improve my riding. The learning curve is endless.

Other things:

Always wear protective gear. Do not be tempted to wear shorts. You will drop the bike at one point in time.

Common stats: Many accidents happen within 15 KM of where you live.
35% of accidents are from cars making a left hand turn in front of you.

Practice, practice, pratice.
