I'm still working on the SO. I've got her thinking it might not be a bad idea to go with a group someplace. Both of us are not sure exactly what to expect. We used to backpack before my four year old son arrived, so the camping part is fine.
Some of the ride reports I've looked at seem to plan 4 hour travel time road trip, that ends up taking a day after stops. We're looking for a good ride with scenery and fun. Not really into a race through the Whites 2-up. I'm affraid that might turn this my first and last bike tour with the wife.
I bought the new Wee on 8/1/06 and I'm still farkling up. Givi cases coming this week but the side racks won't be here until next week. I'm still getting used to the bike and hope to get the hard cases on and filled for a few road tests before that weekend. Packing on the bike is going to be someplace between backpacking and canoe camping, I'm sure I won't get it right on the first trip out.
Does anybody have FRS comm gear installed and would it be useful for this trip?
Forgot to add that we could camp Friday night too but would likely get in well after dark. I almost prefer that to getting up really early :(

I'll likely ride up Friday night, meet up for dinner and route planning. Got a couple extra days vacation to go through. Not sure how much route planning we need, as a certain 3"x5" laminated backroad map I own of the region tells me the NE Kigdom should be ridden counterclockwise starting in Stowe, along routes 100, 2, 102, 114, 111, 5A, 5, 14, 15 and back to 100. 234 miles, in about 6 hours, or so it says. Add in those light brown roads where you get the pebbles stuck in the grooves in your tires, a decent break for lunch, and it's a day in this rider's opinion.
For comparison, the last Adirondack ride was 311 miles, 9am departure until about 6:00 at night and I thought it felt about right. And there should be no fear of putting up with racer-boy antics with this crowd. We ride at a "spirited" pace, and if your guardian angel doesn't fly as fast as someone else's, they'll be waiting at the next intersection for you without any hard feelings.
As for my better half, depending how she feels, she may drive the cage up for Saturday night camping.
And Tom, fear not, I'll write the ride report... Just gotta build the helmet cam between now and then...

Still dialing the MadStad unit in. Too many choices. I might even have completed farkling up by the time we go. I have the E45 Givi installed, the E36 sides are shipping later this week.
Early this morning I ordered the last parts: Pat Welsh guards. That seemed to be the hardest decision I made.
I believe at this point we're in. Worst case we ride sweep on all the rides or break free from the group. Since I haven't had a bike for almost 20 years my wife isn't veyr comfortable with the whole thing yet. So we haven't done much 2up riding in the first 10 days I've owned the bike. She's been on the DRZ for a few minutes at a time, but it's not really a 2up bike. The DRZ rides probably didn't help her confidence, although she's driven the DRZ a couple of times herself.

This is the place I'm considering:
http://www.ucampnh.com/twinriver/rates.asp
It is close to Woodsville, NH. A good starting point for northern NH and VT's Northeast Kingdom.
4 people per campsite.
4 so far?
Northeast Kingdom: http://www.vtliving.com/towns/nek.shtml
I did the White Mountain ride last week...from Maine up RT 114 to 302 to Rt 3 to Lincoln, then back on the Kancamangus Hwy. Nice trip. Ended up doing about 170 miles. Best weather to ride. No rain. Perfect.

I tried to make the above mention route on MapSource. It took me awhile but I think I got something fairly close that starts near the proposed campground and ends up there at the end of the day. It does skip the actual town of Stowe, and ends up being about 270miles round trip. I'll try to post a picture and gpx file over the weekend.
On another note, reading over the campground info it says 4 people to site, but 2 are assumed to be under 18, and there is a charge per extra adult. Not a big deal, but if we know we're going to need a couple of sites it might be worth trying to get them grouped together? I'm fine with calling an reserving my own for my wife and I, but we should agree on a group name. Has anybody already made a reservation, we could just request to be near them? Note that I plan on getting in fairly late on Friday, since my wife works evenings and it's a few hour ride to the campground.

Stromeur650,
Sorry you can't make it. I like the photo of you in your avatar. But where did you find that groovy background?
VtSTROM-K5,
I will explain it all. You will understand (after a few ales, well...maybe more). It was a simple mistake. Also, if it's too dry and dusty we can eliminate the dirt sections this time.
JohnS,
Stowe is a bit out of the way, and not in the Kingdom. Rt. 2 is pretty boring IMHO. I was thinking this would be a backroads ride in The Northeast Kingdom and some parts of northern NH. Some Rt.'s would be used too. As you guys probably know, I like to get lost. I usually do not plan to stick to a definite route. I do have some great riding areas planned though. I also have some good scenic photo ops like the famous round barn in Barnet, in there too.
Now John, do you think I would put us near a smelly bathroom? We are near the dumpster so we don't have far to throw the bottles. :D
RedAnt,
I will book a couple of campsites next to each other if that's OK with you and everyone. The ones in the meadow have water & elec. and are $27.00 ea. not including the x-tra charge for more than 2 adults. I think the owner said we can have 3 adults at the regular price. I will check.
SO, 2 sites altogether right? I think we have 6 people now.
I have reserved sites M10 & M11 tentatively. They are near the highway, and on the meadow grass. Let me know if this is not what we want.

I just threw a route out there to start, we can play follow the leader if you want to.... Heck, I live in New York, what can I possibly know about New England? I'll bring my dirt-road atlas of VT... Don't have a NH one yet... yet.
My only consideration would be to pick a few towns that we KNOW we're going through so if anyone gets separated we know where to re-group at. Or if a particular dirt excursion wants to be skipped by a rider we can meet up... You know, like the time we waited in Lake Placid for someone to go take pictures and then sweepers at 100+...
But I've been practicing on the gravel roads around here, so I'm getting better at them... I tell you, I do get some funny looks though. That's a sportbike, what are you doing with it all the way out here?

Hey all , this is end of sales year clearance time .. any bets as to how many jeeps we'll see??
ok, the correct answer is ........MORE THAN ONE G@* D$%& JEEP. :x :x
I'll bet a dime that we'll see no Jeeps in front of us.
You, my friend, are the Jeep magnet. So, you can bring up the rear. That way, all the jeeps will be following us. :P

Hey Tom,
I am thinking about going but I'll ride at my own pace (turtle) and catch up with everyone at the checkpoints. Would those checkpoints be street addresses and towns that I could plug into my GPS.
Also, I have zero light-weight camping equipment. What do you all bring (tent, sleeping bag, lantern, etc. ) to the campsites.

Well I don't think you'll be alone in that slow lane. I took my wife out today for our first 2-up ride on the Wee. I was surprised that it still performs well, although I could certainly feel the extra weight. She was fine, but not so happy about me speeding around, leaning into turns and approaching red-line. Still not sure what the Wee's going to feel like 2-up with all the Givi boxes filled. I believe we'll be taking it fairly easy on this maiden voyage.
On the plus side my wife and I might be the only ones in all the video footage. It will be like having a trailing camera crew. :)

Hi Red,
I'm looking forward to meeting you and Mrs. RedAnt :!: Going slow has its upside too. You just ride with a more relaxed, explorers mentality. You can really take in and enjoy the scenery as you Strom along. I'm always hoping to see a bear, moose or something, not on the road of course.
The Kancamagus sure sounds like fun to ride and explore. I found this description on the internet:
White Mountain National Forest: The Kancamagus Scenic Byway offers one of the most beautiful routes through New Hampshire's White Mountains. Visitors know it as one of the world's most spectacular fall-foliage trips, but a stunning spectrum of color underscores the region's natural beauty year round. The road meanders through vast forests, old logging roads, and Indian hunting paths. An abundance of history and recreation lies here, so take the time to pull off the road and explore all that the Byway offers....

I guess I've been around the Kanc all my life, so to me it's just a twisty road with lots of backpacking trail-heads leaving it. During foliage its really packed with leaf peepers driving really slowly. The North country roads get overwhelmed each year when the leaves turn, the Kan is one of the first to bust at the seems under the heavy load.
That said there's a very nice swimming hole with natural water slides and falls that's along the side of the road and worth the stop. If there's no construction and light traffic I'm sure it would be a nice twisty road on a bike. There are a number of scenic mountain scape views from the road, and a lot of short trails to waterfalls and other overlooks. You could spend a lot of time on that stretch of road. Oddly I do a four day backpacking trip every year and I think we see more color driving to and from the trail-head than during the hike. You can just cover so much more terrain on a vehicle that on foot that you get to see exactly where peak-foliage is at the time.

 Actually I was just thinking of my last post where I said, riding with you I would have my own personal videographer. Then I realized the obvious question to ask you. What is the mounting system you're buying? I use a ram 1" ball for my GPS, and I have access to the 1.5" ball as well. If you're using RAM mounts I could be capable of providing some video footage of you riding your bike too. Let me know if I should get the 1.5" ball and installed it.

I was going back an forth on which one to buy. Finally, I decided on one (from sportbikecam) that mounts to the gas tank:
http://www.sportbikecam.com/shop.shtml
I am hoping (between the mounting location and the built-in dampener) that this will provide for the best quality images. I thought that attaching it to the handlebars with a ram mount would have more vibration but I really have no clue.

Hey guys, I am currently mapping out a route. This will include a lot of little backroads and scenic places that you would otherwise never see.
Here is a preliminary overview:
From Campsite to Bath and over the covered bridge. Backroads to Rt. 135. Up 135 to Monroe. Over bridge to Barnet, VT. Stop at Round Barn for photos. Backroad to Barnet Center for scenic photo opp. Through West Barnet and Peacham (most photographed town in VT) to Danville. Rt. 2 to Rt. 91N to Lyndonville. Scenic roads to Burke mountain. Ride to top of mountain. Up 5A to Lake Willoughby and then over to rt. 105. Go through Island Pond on rt.105 to rt.102 to Colebrook, NH. Rt. 145 to Pittsburg and the Connecticut Lakes (source of the Connecticut River). Depending on time, either a faster route back (rt.3 to rt. 116 to rt. 302 to campground) or a more scenic one through NH.
This route involves a minimum of dirt roads. Nobody likes to ride in the dust of multiple bikes. If it is not dusty, or if there is sufficient wind to blow the dust away, then I can include more dirt and still follow the same approximate route.
It will be a FULL day of riding! Some great restaurants along the way too.
Let me know if this sounds good to you guys. :D

I never considered that it's just a standard shoe mount for a camcorder. I'll see if we have something like that laying around that I can borrow for at least that weekend. There's a good chance that I might be able to get a 1.5" RAM setup to shoot a little footage for you. Then you could compare the video later. I'll see what I can dig up.

Sounds good to me. I look forward to comparing both methods.
Ahem - Capture me on video, that's like trying to capture the wind. The best you will get (if you're lucky) is a blur as I come screaming by at the speed of light. Actually, video of my riding will probably look more like a still shot.

Bruce- with that last post, you must be an engineer! Anyway, any ride is fine to me. I rode through the north country last weekend and the roads were great with not too much traffic. Anyone not familiar to the area should be reminded to bring their jacket liner as it gets colder above Concord (I had full gear on Sunday, minus liner and still got pretty cold). Anyway, need to read through the last few pages to see what's up for the ride. I look forward to finally meeting you all.

Hey Bruce,
That's pretty cool! Is that from a GPS? Where can I access something like that on the web?
Up to Pittsburg is pretty close, but after that, you are showing going Rt. 26 over to Errol and then down to Glen. Then going Rt. 302 to the campsite.
I like it!
We are going to be making stops and might get back in the dark. That's OK with me, but we must be aware that moose and deer come out at night. There are plenty of them up here.
Might I suggest we leave earlier in the day? Say like 7:00- 7:30? That way we might be back by nightfall.
If we're not, that's OK with me.! That's what we call an adventure! I'm up for anything. It will be cool to cold at night and in the early morning, so bring the appropriate clothing/gear.
Also, maybe when we get to Third Connecticut Lake, we can decide which way to go? Depending on what time it is and riders input?

Thanks for the tip on riding gear. I probably would have worn a short sleeve shirt with a mesh jacket and froze my tail off.

Getting back by nightfall - I don't want my final video scene to end up being of some ugly moose's ass. :x
Starting early sounds like the right thing to do. Going up to the third lake adds another 1/2 hr.
stromeur650 could just about meet us at the third lake on his lunch break.
My maps are created form MS Streets and Trips. I have a similar program --for my GPS-- that can also download the route directly to the GPS. I have been toying with the ideas of devloping a web sites that could coordinate motorcycle rides with maps and other planning tools.

We can go for a ride and have some lunch and check in at the campsite and lodge.

I went on a couple hundred mile ride today with a couple of guys from advrider. We had great weather, and very little traffic. There is a section of the Kanc, east of bear notch rd, that is one lane due to construction. Driving the eastern section we didn't hit dirt on the Kanc. We did drive Hurricane Mountain Road as well as the dirt road over Jefferson Notch.
I put pictures and a GPX file here: https://rcc.sr.unh.edu/~rea/adv060817/

Man, take a few days to go camping and get lost, and you guys fill up 2 more pages...
I'll get up there Friday evening, hopefully in time for dinner and beverages, but will not be taking the whole day off work. Can I check in to the campsite with the Stromtrooper name alone? Has a place for dinner been picked yet?
And reading your exchanges about taking pictures while riding, and trying to write the last trip report using pirated images, I developed and built my own camera mount. Real penny-tech stuff, total build cost FREE! Took me about 2 hours... Piece of old pipe with a nut welded on it, salvaged dial indicator stand, and the handle bracket from my broken weed whip. Retracts and deploys. It should be obvious that there are no pictures with the camera mounted.
Retracted out of the way for regular riding
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h4/sassatjo/Retracted.jpg
And deployed for photgraphs.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h4/sassatjo/Deployed.jpg
The whole thing adjusts with the big knob you can see in the shots, but I carry a strap-wrench to get it good and tight. I learned a few things this past weekend taking some shots:
1. Focus at infinity. Otherwise the bugs on the windscreen are clear, and the road/scenery ahead is not
2. Video longer than 10 seconds isn't much fun to watch later unless you're trying to critique your own riding and cornering skills. Do not show video of twisty roads and steep lean angles to non-motorcyclists. They lose interest and get motion sickenss.
3. Paint bare metal, otherwise it'll rust in the rain... Anyone care to guess how I know this?
Anyway, looking forward to seeing y'all again. John.

My wife and I should be there late Friday night (she has to work). My guess is that we would be at the campsites between 10-11pm, but traffic or weather could make us later.
In the morning I'm sure we'll want to eat breakfast before heading out. That seems like the best "starting point" for our ride. That way people have a larger window say 6:40-7:20 to meet us there? Anybody have a clue where to eat breakfast in the area? I would guess the campground could fill us in if we don't know.
Here's hoping the weather forecast only gets better for the weekend!

And from out of the darkness.....I'm in. I have been silently lurking until I was sure I could attend. I'm staying at the Nootka Lodge. I don't have saddlebags so I'm not going to attempt lugging the camping gear up. I'm a spoiled camper anyway. (cooler of food & drink, big pile of firewood and an air mattress)
I should be rolling into town around supper time. I'll hunt the rest of you down.

I just went over all the posts and I believe we have 7 bikes going?
If I counted correctly I think there's two in a hotel and five bikes camping? I might be the only one riding 2-up, making 6 camping Friday and Saturday night.
At this point I believe we'll still be getting in late. I hope whoever is camping in sites M10 & M11 is nice because they're likely to have me sleeping next to them when they wake up in the morning? I sure hope it's you guys. I assume we'll see lots of Strom's even if you all turn in early.
See everybody soon :D

From the sounds of it, I'll be departing between 4 and 5 on Friday, which depending how much slab I want to ride up will put me there between 7 and 9...
I may take 91 more than I normally would, just because I don't like setting up camp in the dark. Besides, the roads on Saturday will more than make up for it. The big V handles steep hills at highway speed fully laden like they're not even there. Maybe when we get to camp we continue the V vs wee debate by pulling up stumps? Whattaya think Jack, you in? :P
I've got camp stuff strewn about the house, time must be getting close. See you on Friday.

snowcommuter: I have 16 tooth front sprocket (15 is stock) and for me 65 mph = 4600 rpm. So I would think 5k on your bike would put you at a reasonable highway speed.

I bet the Wee would get great mileage if I could keep it under 5K. Actually it sound better down there anyway, very smooth.
As for oil we just need to buy a big jug of OJ and some cups. We drink the OJ and use the container for oil transport. Perhaps there's someplace local that could take it from there?

Hey snowcommuter, We are not riding on any roads that the ST1300 can't handle. Just regular town maintained gravel, if any at all. We can even skip the dirt altogether. In fact, I haven't sheduled any dirt or gravel at all! So, if you want to reconsider, we'd like to have you with us. :D

Thanks for the open offer jackpiner57 but I have been on a few rides as the odd bike out (like riding with an FZ1 group, long day) and it's just not the same. It's hard to explain but I don't want to get in the way of what this group would naturally want to do...let's say dirt. Also the warden (wife  ) knows I'm disappearing when the new bike eventually shows up and I don't want to push my luck by never being around. I don't have that many brownie points. Although she did just get a new Mini S convertible...maybe I should check my brownie points more carefully.

I do enough dirt riding, so I don't need to do any. And, it looks like the weather is going to be dry. Believe me, we don't want to ride dirt and have 99% of the group breathing thick dust. Besides, I love ST's! Just think of it as a fun motorcycle ride with riders of all levels. So, if you have enough brownie points, you won't be disappointed.

I left that truckstop on I-91 around 9:30 am, after saying bye to VtSTROM-K5, JohnS and RedAnt and his wife. It was just drizzling as I got onto the highway, then began to pour. Once I got to NH I was able to get ahead of the rain clouds and keep them nipping at my heels until I got home (at noon). My odometer says a hair under 500 miles for my ride. Not too bad.

I had a great ride with all of you! It was nice to meet RedAnt & wife, Pink & wife and dmf109. The weather was perfect and everyone kept it on two wheels. I look forward to riding with all of you again soon. :D
Well, this morning I woke up at 9:00 and wondered if VtSTROM-K5 wanted to go for a ride in the rain. I was heading to the campsite, and when I rode past P+H Truckstop a few V-Stroms caught my eye. It was VtStrom-K5, JohnS, and RedAnt & his wife. I rode by the windows for a visual and stopped in for breakfast. After I ate the "Truckers Special" we went our separate ways pretty well stuffed. Except for Jack and me, we rode around for a while and explored some dirt roads. Things started to get really slick and we decided not to break our turn signals off and got back on the asphalt.
We ended up at the famous River Run Restaurant in Plainfield, VT and Jack wasn't hungry(couldn't understand why) and took off for home and I ate some southern style catfish. :D The rain stopped and I rode through Groton State Forest and back home. The End. :D
I'm glad to see everyone made it home safe. The wife and I had a ball. Saw some beautiful sights and met some new friends. Thanks to everybody for having us along. We look forward to the next ride. Next time I'll remember the camera :D . Ride safe. Pink.

I can say exactly the same thing! I was riding around on my DRZ and reading up on Stroms during the June ride. I considered trying to go so that I could see some Stroms in action. Glad I didn't because now having one I realize how painful it would have been to try to keep up on the DRZ! As well as painful to my posterior.
Anyway it was a great weekend ride. The rain didn't even spoil the trip. The group was GREAT. We road at completely safe speeds, over great roads. It's quite odd how much we all seem to have in common.
Oddly I now feel the Wee is pretty good offroad, although it's not that much fun offroad when riding 2-up. It feels really light when you're up on the pegs. Someday I'll have to get some more dirt worthy tires and see what she can do.
On the road the Wee had no problem 2-up with just under 70lbs of gear jammed into 3 Givi cases. I have to say that it's been a great month. I bought the Wee on 8/1/06 and by the 27th I had over 1900 great miles on it.
snowcommuter I think you'll find that Wee will be worth the wait! :D

Here's a dilema...the 07' I have been waiting for is still 2 weeks+ out I just found out. I can get a red 06 for less $$$ in a day. Now I hear the 07' is 3 hp down on the 06' due to a leaner(?) running condition for some emissions reason. So I am adding complexity (2 plugs) and loosing power for more $$$. Thoughts???? :?

The decision was easier for me, as the 07 models didn't exist a month ago. I did know that they would be changing to two plugs. Since I knew the existing 650 motor was great, and have no idea what a change might do, I decided to buy the known good motor. That could be the wrong decision??? Time will tell, but I figure I made the safe choice. If you plan on selling it, it might be better to have that newer year model for resale. From what existed a month ago, the resale market for Stroms was really good, nearly new prices. Now that the ABS is coming I suspect there will be a few more used ones on the Market and resale price might go down???
I like my 06 Wee. Doesn't seem like there are many significant changes besides the plugs.

Well, after leaving the truck stop for Breakfast, I took the quick route south on I91, and man did I get DRENCHED!!! As I had a few hours before I went to get the canoe, I found a laundromat and threw my socks and pants into a dryer. The boots didn't fully dry out until Wednesday!
Great trip down the river. A little rainy at times, but the two highlights were following bald eagles in the wild, and discovering that one of our campsites was 1/4 mile from the Harpoon Brewery in Windsor, VT. Both made for a memorable trip.
