MIDDLETOWN -- Several hundred bikers are expected to converge on Main Street this summer for the inaugural "Middletown Motorcycle Mania."
A section of Main Street will be closed for several hours during the Aug. 17 event, which will showcase custom and vintage motorcycles.
Organizers hope to attract 600 to 800 motorcycles to the event, sponsored by the city and a Hartford-based Harley-Davidson dealership. The event will run from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Trophies will be awarded in several motorcycle classes, including a "People's Choice" award for best in show.
The city has agreed to provide police, fire, public safety and parks and recreation support, according to organizers of the event, which is designed to attract out-of-towners to Main Street.
Jeffrey Spiegel is the event chairman, heading a committee that includes Deputy Police Chief Phil Pessina and Cathy Duncan of the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce.
"This is the first time this is being done," Duncan said Wednesday.
Spiegel and the other organizers say they envision the bike fest as a "fun, dynamic, interactive and positive experience for all attendees." Food vendors and music are planned. The rain date is Aug. 24.
"The old image of rough-and-tough and troublemaking riders has long since faded away," Spiegel said. "While there still may be small pockets of `outlaw bikers' throughout the country, most riders today are professionals," he said.
The event is an offshoot of the annual "Cruise Night on Main," which showcases classic cars. The ninth annual Cruise Night is slated for June 8 from 5:30 to 9 p.m.
