Original Message below so you know what we did. Post your info even if you didn't get to do it on the 10th (like me, I actually forgot. )
__________________________________________________ _________

Let's have a national event.
Here is what we will do.

Since many of us like to share/brag about our gas mileage, let's compare all at once.

This upcoming Sunday, June 10, 2006 I will put up a thread "MPG REPORTS". In this thread we will post our MPG. This will mean that either Saturday or Sunday, you must test your MPG and report it in the thread. Ideally only the stats will be in that thread, no commentary.

The protocol will be as follows.

DL 1000 or DL 650

Octane of Gas.

Mileage Calculation (Mileage/Gas used)

Outdoor Temperature.

Type of mods to your Strom that could affect mileage. IE Windshield, Cases, Powercommander, etc.

Weight of rider (could be optional if necessary)

Type of riding during test. IE Highway, City, or Wide Open.

Total Miles on your V-Strom

The data will be kept as a sticky in the "Performance/Mods" forum for all of us to look at.

Let's do it!

Neat idea for everyone to get involved. One suggestion though. We have MPG/ US.....We have MPG/ CAN/European. And of course true Canadian fuddle duddle L/100 KM. Can you make it work so everyone can get involved and have real all over the world results. I'll start right now. I'm up to 3500 KMs./front signal.

Good deal. Post it how ever it works in your part of the world.

Do we post indicated miles? Since I went +2 in rear sprocket the speedo/odo is even more whacked. Most riders don't know their odo is off (stock), some folks run GPS (like myself), etc. Given this is going to run this Sunday I will be at a high elevation which will be a big advantage on the Big V's mpg. Maybe I'll have to unload all the luggage and draft behind RTJohn.

And the Hungarian fuddle duddle L/100 KM...? :D

Don't worry, to save you to convert my values I did it for you.

I developed a very simple excel table where I put data after every fill up.
If you are interested in, drop a pm and I send it to you.

I did not filed all the data Howboucha specified so far, but as far as I remember:

DL 650
Octane of Gas: 95 ROZ
Outdoor Temperature: 11-26 Celsius
Type of mods: windshield (almost under continuous setting, even without it), Kappa K46 topcase, stock handguards, lowering link(?impact?)

Type of riding during test: mostly intercity roads with very few highway and some gravel and city
Total Miles on my V-Strom: 2200+

Now I need to go for test-ride, see you later.

2004 DL650 with >28,000 miles. Stock screen on low (for summer) with Givi 46 and 21's. Total weight with rider, gear, luggage and stuff is about 220 I figure.

For three legs of the weekend's trip:
First tank: 195.2 miles, 4.627gals => 42.19MPG. This was all freeway (yuk), 70-80mph.

Second leg: 183.2 miles, 3.748gals => 48.88MPG. This was all two-lane fun roads (like some of Hwy 58 for the CA crowd), 20-85MPH

Third leg: 195.2 miles, 4.149gals => 47.05MPG. One half freeways, one half fun roads, varying from bad headwind to some side and tailwinds, 20-85MPH.

Last time out I ran into a flock (Swarm?) of big-assed grasshoppers at 90+, running that last bit of straight road past the Soda Lake area, before the twisties and then Mckiterick.

My mileage report (thanks for the spreadsheet Mokus!):

DL650K5

Avg. mpg over 9 fillups is 45.86

I had one weird tank where I got only about 30 mpg but I think that was just after I passed the initial low-rpm break-in threshold and I cranked the right hand with more gusto for a while.

Always used 87 pump octane.

Bike is totally stock, so far. :(

Temps having varied from a low of about 5C :( to a high of 31C :(

Mostly "commuter" riding (12 miles highway + 2-3 city each way)

The bike has about 3200 Km on it now.

My mileage calculations are based on Imperial gallons.

Four separate fills of 87 octane.
Two up riding with full luggage. Some high speed runs. A lot of back roads on a 2005 model DL1000.
Sample calculation; 150 miles / 2.8 imp. gallon = 53.6 mpg
Average over 4 fills = 50.47 mpg

Imperial gallon X 1.2 = US gallon

Therefore I averaged 44.6 miles per US gallon.

'06 DL1000 with a K&N air filter, 43T rear sprocket and Givi windshield.

Recently finished a 5,000 km trip on which I averaged just over 53 miles per imperial gallon. This included one day of severe headwinds on the praries where the mileage dropped to under 40 mpg for 1-1/2 tanks. The bike was loaded (overloaded) with full Givi V46 topcase, full (stuffed) E41 side cases, 20 litre tank bag, my fat ass and my wife's dainty derriere.

Hey Waterwarrior,

It was good to meet up with you. I noticed the raised eyebrows as Jennifer and I pulled out of the parking lot. Would that be the first time you've heard a Stebel air horn on a Strom?

The pic is pre-trip. Right now, the bike is lost in the mail, I think. I was supposed to drop it off on the Friday before we flew home and the bike was going to be picked up the following Monday. I arrived at the dealership to drop the bike off, on Friday, as planned, and they were all freaked out, saying that the carrier had been there the previous Wednesday to pick up the bike. I think it has been picked up now, finally, but it means the bike doesn't get back home until next week...when Jennifer and I will be in Las Vegas. Wanna come to Ontario for a couple of days and receive my bike when they drop it off? You know, make sure there's no shipping damage and that it gets put safely back in my garage?

Sorry we had to run but the timing ended up perfect. We rolled up to the ferry and loaded right away. Ended up getting to where my brother works in Victoria, just as he was finishing up for the day. Did you take the long way home after we split up?

water warrior
09-15-2006, 07:43 PM
Take the long way home ?? Not really, I took the long way to Tim's though. Actually missed a couple off-ramps and had a tour of the area.
Yup that was my first Stebel hearing experience, not my last though. Mine is in the mail somewhere right now. Afraid I can't be there to check in your bike for you but there is this job thing again for a few weeks. I really hate getting up so early but they pay me pretty well and it sure beats a minimum wage full time job. The extra cash buys farkles and vacations. So far this year I have ridden twice as far as last year. I think that is a good thing but my car sure is lonely.

Involute
09-24-2006, 09:50 PM
A little late to the party but I just bought my Wee. I did about 500 miles this weekend and I made a bit of a science project out of my fuel consumption.

BTW, I have a K7 with a 16T front, stock sheild in highest position and I weight 280. Stock tires with 39 PSI rear and 36 front I think.

First leg of the trip I did a steady 5000 RPM (63 MPG per GPS?) and got 48.4 MPG.

Second leg I did a steady 5500 RPM (73 MPH per GPS) and got 41.8 MPG

Third leg I did a steady 4500 RPM (60 MPH per GPS) and got 55.5 MPG.

A constant 80 MPH per my GPS yields right at 39 MPG.

I can't help but think that the guys that always get over 50 MPG either ride more conservatively or weigh considerably less than me. Or maybe they live in an area where 65-75 MPH speed limits are few and far between. I really wish the Speedo was not so inaccurate.

Has anyone noticed lower MPGs as it gets colder? Well, anyone other than me.

I just recently switched employers, and my commute is only about 5 miles, but it's all streets, no highway. And I could swear I'm getting between 5 and 10 miles fewer on each "bar" of the gas gauge. Is that attributable to never getting higher than 3rd gear, or the fact that it's been 35-45 degrees?

Well I went on a ride that included I91 yesterday and ended up trying to keep ahead of a guy in an Impala. I did 105 actual (GPS) for about 20 miles or so. The rest of this partial tankful included some very spirited riding and ended riding at normal speeds.

MPG for this partial tankful was:

Rode 145.3 Mi.
Drank 3.936 Gal.
That's 36.915 MPG

That's my lowest yet. I'll have to do a docile day and see what my highest MPG will be.

Went another 188 mi. with most of it being somewhat spirited riding, but no high speed superslab work. I got 45.68 MPG

I am currently on a new tank of gas and I am taking it really easy to see what I get for MPG. I am cruising around at 4200-4500 rpm and will report my mileage when I fill up again.

So far:

Low= 36.915 mpg
Medium= 45.68 mpg
High= ? we'll see

"For V-strom enthuisiasts worldwide"

If this is to be truly a worldwide forum don't forget us in those countries where we only know the Decimal system. I see our friend in Hungary converted his figures for those who only understand MPG, it would have been great had also displayed the metric figures (L/100km or KM/L.)

I'll step down off my soapbox now:mrgreen:

Wat he said. I'm always converting my metric stuff to imperial and US for the international amongst us. This is one of the very best free conversion calculators available http://www.pawprint.net/vv/ It's very small, does not use Windows registry and has regular free database upgrades.

Just a hint for a little etiquete and better international relations.

My weight dressed for rideing is 170 lb.
Still have orginal tires, w/ plenty of miles to go.
4500 miles.
Primary sproket is 16 tooth, seconday 47 tooth.
Tire pressure is 34 psi FT,41 psi RR
Fuel is 87 oct. but trying to find the heavy leaded stuff.
The 06 650 is rather heavy w/centerstand,
crash bars,
pair of pelicans W/ rack
carring tools, rain suits, dark chocolate 1/4 lb.,
bottled water, chain lube, & stuff
steel skid plate, w/ oil coole grill, radiator grill
hand guards
trunk plate
heavey duty motor oil
Best mpg riding over 380 miles, 2 up was 57+.
Best mpg riding over 260 miles, solo was 62+.
Worst milage was solo, w/ hot acceleration & track speeds yeild 32 mpg.
Average day in trafic & w/ equal hwy distance is 53 to 55 mpg.
Std wind plastic at full height, but soon to be replaced.
Have found rpm over 5500 really suck up the fuel.
I try to shift around 4500, unless I am 2 up.
I can feel the lose of a little [very little] torque due to the 16 tooth, but only when a second person is riding w/ me & during the on ramps.
I do a milage check on every refueling & try to get down to the last bar.
As yet I haven't tried to squeezzzzzz out the best I can get.
About half of my driving is w/ wife, so I tend to carry over that conservative style of riding when solo. No, I don't hold up traffic.
This bike is just a pure pleasure to drive any way.

Does anyone know the real capacity of the 650's tank?
And does the fuel pump suck the tank dry or is there still some splashing about?
Thanks

greywolf

It's 22 liters minus the little air space required because the fill tube goes below the surface. Do not even consider running the tank close to dry. You will fry your fuel pump bearings and fuel pumps are very expensive.

Will take the advice, Never try to empty a perfectly good tank of fuel.

Fuel tank volume is 22 litres and as greywolf states there is a gap, which is also there for fuel expansion, so actual usuable fuel from everything I've read is around 21.5 litres.

I calculate all fuel stops on 21 litres of fuel, which gives me an averaged range of just under 410k, so I take 400k as the max distance for normal riding, weather and no head winds.

Does your goverment offer you a tax break for buying cars that get high fuel milage?

No, in fact our government sides with the oil companies on most things, including when they blatantly fuel gouge, which is every holiday period.

Though not as cheap as the US, we have amongst the cheapest petrol in the OECD though. Out prices are supposedly pegged to the Singapore moving weekly average, but they are very slow (up to a week) to put prices down when the moving average goes down, but put up petrol prices within hours of the moving average going up.

Our State governments charge cheap registration fees for motorbikes though. Can be 66% cheaper than car rego. This year my 2.8 litre turbo diesel Isuzu truck was A$320 and my DL was just under A$90. Compulsary 3rd party insurance (CTP) is about the same for cars and bikes.

Here is a (geeky) chart showing my mileage since I bought the bike a few months ago. Overall I'm averaging about 53mpg (US). About 80% of the miles have been fully loaded touring, side cases, top case, and me. I have the stock screen and stock gearing.

Wide temperature and elevation extremes. And I think some of the tall peaks and low valleys can be attributed to the inconsistant full-service gas stations south of the US. Some of the guys filled the tank to the very brim, and other left some space.

Just got back from a road trip on my 05-DL1000 and it was at east 70% highways 70+mph. I weigh about 300lbs fully geared and have a windstrom shield, NR-CL-850 bags loaded and top box.

The PCIII is set to a 0 map and I have the Accelerator Pump feature turned on and set to 80/15/20. Fresh TBS.

I do get a brief lag/miss occassionally when I twist the throttle hard from about 3500 rpm I think the AP is too rich, as it doesn't feel like a lean miss, more of a stumble - and not all the time just at times when all the planets are aligned just right.

I was very pleased with the overall MPG, seems like highway riding it does better than on slower roads with some stop and go. (Just opposite of my 1100 Shadow). BTW my Shadow gets about the same MPG - but the fun per gallon is much less on the Shadow.

I topped off the tank the other day. Bone stock '07 650, 200 lb rider, keeping it under the recommended 5,000 rpm on back 2 lane roads and a little superslab. 3 gallons used in the first 159 miles - 53 mpg. Joe

DL-1000, 03 version averaging 44.3 mpg for the last 6,100 miles since I bought it used. Better mpg on a two lane highways (closer to 50 mpg) and 44 or so on the interstate here in Colorado.

Fine with me!

I weigh 240, have a JCW top case and mostly commute in and out of Boston. Lots of traffic, traffic lights, stops and starts.

For the last 1,359 miles I've averaged 50.1 mpg. The lowest tank was 46.2. The highest, 52.2.

I plan to take a leaf peeping trip soon so the mpg should improve.

I'm getting 48 to 52 mpg depending on the type of riding. I have a stock '07 K7 without any farkles with about 2,000 miles on it so far. The bike is used as a daily commuter and weekend adventurer. The commutes return around 50 mpg and the highway adventures return closer to 48 mpg at typical 70 mph. Either way... the bike is all smiles.

with about 3,000 miles on the bike, I consistently get about 54 mpg. Part of that is highway, part of it's back roads, and part of it is stop-and-go city driving. Best so far was 57 mpg, about two months ago.

2 years late and a few dollars short. I did my last tank and this is real world numbers including a few full throttle accelerations to road speed and cranking around turns in the mountains. Elevation 700-3000 ft. Gearing is plus 2 teeth on the front cog. 3 large givi cases and my considerable 275 lb bulk. Maybe 10 lbs or so junk in the top case. Temperatures between 70 and 95 depending on time of day and elevation. 60.81 mpg over 225 miles. also used regular fuel with 10% ethanol (yuch!) I have gotten as good as 64.8 by behaving myself, but that is just too boring :devil_16:
Very little city traffic mostly 2 lane roads and some 4 lane unlimited access (speed limit 60 in VA) Mostly I tend to ride no more than 5 over...I like having a license :)

ps - it has 3900 miles on it now. No tune up work done yet, ridden as delivered except for gearing and raised up windshield

Fresh valve adjustment early June 2008 (1770 miles ago)

Stock 17/41t gearing
Teflon chain lube
85 octane gas here in Colorado is what I ran for 80% of this period, otherwise it was 87 octane when REALLY hot outside.

I ride with a GPS so the total mileage I use for calculation is based on the GPS, not the odometer. FWIW, the GPS shows my odometer to read 1.4% optimistic with the stock gearing based on the last 3000 miles of use since I went back to stock gearing from a 17/42t combo that came with the bike. I have owned the bike since the 14,985 mile mark. As well, I fill up at the same pump, facing the same direction, fill to same point at base of filler neck, etc.

This is my gas mileage for the last 1770 miles since the valve adjustment, putting the K&N back in, switching to the teflon chain lube that a lot of guys are doing now and riding at higher elevation here in Colorado.

1770 on odo, 1745 Gps miles as of filling the tank to the usual level on Aug. 14th. Mileage period began on June 9th. 35.845 gallons.

48.687 mpg average.

FWIW I was averaging 44.25 mpg for the first 10,462 miles (corrected for the 3.4% odo error with 17/42t gearing) and this jump in mpg unequivocally came after the valve adjustment, going to the K&N and switch to teflon chain lube.

I am not a strom owner yet, but I'm looking to get a 1000 within the next month. Just wondering about octane requirements cause I see some guys using premium and some using 85-87. What does the 1000 call for? I had assumed it used regular.

My Wee now has around 7K on it, the summer gas and perhaps more break-in miles have raised my average MPG to around 50 MPG for my 120 miles highway commute. Do you think the Murphs fork brace has helped? Passing semis and cross winds with the brace helps me keep my line, not getting blown all over the interstate!:D Ride safe Dave

First of all I admit to being a “grandmother” driver (no, I'm a guy). Yes, I accelerate slowly and generally my speed is between 60 & 65 mph on the highway. To justify this method of driving, I must point out that after 40 years and > 200,000 miles I have never wrecked a street bike (I wreck trail bikes all the time).

With the above information in mind, here are the statistics for my first excursion with my V-Strom 650.

Bike: 2007 V-Strom 650 bought used with 8,200 miles
Distance: a mere 438 miles (GPS miles & speed) (Pa. – southern Md. round
trip)
Roads: 95% superslab
Driving speed: 98% between 60 & 65 mph with ≈ 15 miles of stop & go traffic
Mpg: 66.2
Winds: <10mph
Temperature: 70° - 85°
Weather: ½ sunny & ½ overcast
My weight: 147 pounds with riding gear
Bike Luggage: Givi top & side cases with a total with a total weight of 47
pounds
Bike modifications: Givi windscreen
Speedometer accuracy: Speedometer reads 7% high & odometer reads
2% high relative to a Garmin GPSmap 60CSx
Other bikes: 1974 Kawasaki 900Z with 114,000 miles, 2004 Yamaha TT 225 trail bike, 1969 Kawasaki 350 (dead !!), 1972 Suzuki 175 trail bike (gave to my
brother) & 1972 Kawasaki trail bike (gave to a friend)

Have an '07 Wee with 19k on the clock and consistently get mid to hi 50's mpg. Usually cruz in the 65 - 75 mph bracket and commute 90 miles to work one way. Am usually hauling a stuffed tankbag, rollbag and CCTT (CheapChineseTravelTrunk). Only performance mod is a BMC airfilter.

I just rolled over 3,000 on my '09 Wee and the last 3 tanks averaged 54 MPG. I've got my screen removed and nothing else that should impace MPG. Most driving is slab at 60-80 indicated on my 50 mile r/t commute. Need to get more twistie rides in.
