Hello Everyone,
The Stromtroopers have a trip planned for the Adirondacks, June 24, 2006.
To date the following members should be joining the ride: BHazz, stromeur650, Action, VtSTROM-K5, dmf109, roystr, CaseyStromRider.
We are going to meet (Saturday morning) in the Town of Whitehall (just East of Lake George). The exact time and place to be determined.
Some riders -including myself- might be going up the day before and stay the night.
Everyone:
What time of the morning do you want to meet in Whitehall?
Anyone else who wants to join the adventure, just give a "shout-out".

Thanks All,

For those of us who will sleep at Whitehall the night before, it could be cool to have breakfast together at around 7:30 and that will give others the time to arrive. I think 9:00 could be a good time to leave for the ride.
That's just a suggestion, it could be more appropriate if the Stromtroopers who will get there in the morning determine what time is best for them.
The deal is to accomodate everyone.

I have a map of a potential meeting place at 9:00. For those with a long trip in, would 10:00 am be a better time? Just let us know.

I know that there is someone out there better qualified than me to lead the ride !!!
Does anyone know the area well enough to plan a route through the Adirondacks and possibly lead us through :?:
We're getting soooo close. I'm already excited :D

I'm gonna mosey on up Friday morning. I might take a slight detour through the Catskills. I am passing right by the place.
Whitehall seems to have a couple of flea-bag hotels for around $50 per night. I think that I will try "The Budget Inn". I hate when they use "Budget" in the name. It just sounds like they change the sheets once per month and the room is full of critters.
I'm also up for a few beers and a little map study on Friday night then, breakfast Saturday morning.
So far, no one seems to object to the 9:00am start-ride time.
I found out that Whitehall has a McDonalds. Would you rather meet there for breakfast at 7:30 and 9:00am for starting the trip?
If no one ojbects to the start times and meeting places, we will take that as a "Yes" to the plans.
Thanks, Bruce

Sounds good to me, count me in for Saturday! I decided I'm not up for the flea bag motel, so I'll meet you folks at the McDonalds? (can someone post the cross streets for Mickey D's?) I'll pick up an Adirondack map that's more detailed than the NYS roadmap I usually rely on, unfortunately I won't be there on Friday for the planning session. It will be great to meet and ride with some other 'strommers!

Looks like we have a start time and place for the Adirondacks Ride, June 24:
McDondalds Breakfast at 7:30 am
The ride starts from McDonalds at 9:00am
I have mapped (the best I could) the locations of McDonalds and The Budget Inn.

This has me thinking.
I will be at the western edge of North Carolina doing the Smokey Mountain rough roads ride. My original plan was to head home to Indiana on Saturday but........
Anyone have an idea how long it would take me to get from Sylva, NC to the meeting point for your ride?

Howboucha,
I made a search on Mapquest and it's a 1500 km ride so approximatly 15 hrs.
But your a Stromtrooper :)
No kidding it's a long ride but if you decide to join us, it will be great.
Also, if you can, bring some Stromtrooper shirt, i'll buy you a large one.

I am thinking it's a dooable thing. My only set back is the 24th is my birthday, and Jennifer (wife) is already peeved that my original plan was to get back that evening. I haven't mentioned to her about the possible "detour".
Howboucha, I think this ride makes a good birthday present to yourself. Hope you make it. :D

What if your wife had plan a surprise party for your birthday
Just kidding  forget it and come with us
We'll make sure you get a nice birthday :D
I am very familiar with Whitehall and the Adirondacks. My wife's aunt lives there, and I've been there about 1/2 dozen times. I have a house in Speculator, NY which is in the southern adirondack park. Just got back from there last night. Have put thousands of miles on all over the region. Great roads, beatuful senery, no traffic, few people. May join the ride but am hesitant to volunteer to lead since I am not sure if I can make it. I would appreciate if you would add me and my frequent (DL650) riding partner to whatever list will have info for this run. You can consult with us regarding routes if you want.

Been lurking for a while, on and off, various Strom Forums... But man, am I glad I caught this particular post. Add me to the list of attendees... I'll come up solo.
Couple of Questions:
1. Someone else asked Dual-Sprot or Asphalt-Olny, and I'm still wondering if this has been sorted out. I'm all for some dirt, if someone is willing to show me the way, but as I have ZERO off-road experience am somewhat cautious. If it'll be on the pavement, I've got a firend on a VFR that may come along.
2. About how far are you planning on riding for the day? I don't care about the specific route, all the Adirondacks are beautiful, but I'm more curious about an order of magnitude so I can prepare. 100mi, 200mi, 300mi, more?
Just went from an Intruder 800 to a '06DL1k 6 weeks ago. I never realized that the Intruder handles like a ship!
Look forward to meeting yo all.

Hello Everyone,
This is about a 4 hr. trip and is only a starting place to get some ideas before Fri night. Feel free to rip it apart and make your own suggestions.
Does anyone have any interesting places to see, stop, visit, etc.
http://www.hastech.net/BikeImages/AdirondacksTrip/AdirondacksMap1.jpg
Also, from CT it is predicted rain and/or thunderstorms Fri, Sat and Sunday; therefore I rented a trailer for the bike  ahhhh! I am going on this ride - rain, shine or earthquake.

It would be nice if we could find an alternate route that would eliminate the Rt. 87 Northway section. The way I do it is to just take back roads in the general direction I want to go and consult the map occasionally. If I get lost, that's just a bonus. :D
I won’t be at the Friday gathering so I’ll throw in my 2 cents now.
Perhaps start out north on 22 to the point we can head west and incorporate Lake Placid and Saranac Lakes (nice area). This would eliminate repeating the Warrensburg to Whitehall leg twice.
87 is the most heavily traveled road in the area although becomes pretty tame that far north.
All of 30 is very nice.
Really you can’t go wrong with any route.

I modified the trip based on the suggestions. It is now 3 hr. 51 min.
The Blue Mountains and Rte 87 are both out
Starting out North seems a much better way to begin. Lake Placid sounds beautiful but riding that high up would probably make it a 6 hr. ride.
I am attempting to keep the ride about 4 hrs. Do you want to ride longer, shorter, let me know?
I will work on an alternate ride that goes more North and South. I will include Keene and Lake Placid and we will see what we have for time.
Please add any interesting places, detours, etc. to travel and/or visit.
Keep your opinions coming so we can make this a great ride.

I'll be up there Friday Night, but as it seems all the hotels in town are full, I got a campsite in Fair Haven, VT. So I can get my 2c in on the route, where will you all be gathering, and at about what time?
Figuring I'll get up there about 7pm or so. Somebody had mentioned Roma's on Rt 4 earlier? I'll make a few large format copies of a map for us to use...
Getting close...

I modified this trip based on the suggestions for a trip up around Lake Placid. It is a bit longer (4 hr. 33 min.) but it looks like the best ride, by far.
We have Lake Champlain, the Keane Area, Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, more lakes, Blue Mountains and Route 30. Then heading back on rte 28 and rte 9.
Please add any interesting places, detours, etc. to travel and/or visit.
Keep your opinions coming so we can make this a great ride.

I favor riding till around 5 or 6pm and then getting home in the dark. I like all of the places mentioned and more, but maybe on smaller, twistier and less direct routes. The road less travelled.
I think we could go over a good map on Sat. morn. and consult it frequently during the day, with roadside suggestions and a consensus on which road to take next.
A sudden change of plans at any time could help to make it an adventure.

Hey, guys: I hoped that this wet weather would have ended by now, but it's just not letting go. The NOAA report for tomorrow calls for 60% chance of rain, heavy rainfall and also possible thunderstorms, not my idea of a fun time:
http://www.erh.noaa.gov/ifps/MapClick.php?CityName=Glens+Falls&state=NY&site=ALY
Saturday: Rain likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Mostly cloudy, with a high around 72. East wind 5 to 7 mph becoming north. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Saturday Night: A chance of showers. Patchy fog after midnight. Otherwise, partly cloudy, with a low near 60. Northeast wind around 6 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
I hate to "rain on the parade", but planning to ride in the rain is something I avoid. Getting caught in the rain is something I'll deal with (I have the gear), but not my idea of a fun time. So, sorry but I won't be joining you tomorrow. I was excited about this ride, hope I'll meet you all on another ride later in the season. Unfortunately, so far this season has been a real drag, seems like it's been raining for three months straight now! If the weather's good in the early morning tomorrow, I'll go out for a couple of hours locally. (My "consolation" prize). I hope the NOAA report is wrong and you don't get more than a sprinkle! Happy trails! Casey

I am also coming from the same area as caseystromrider. Last I saw the local weather folks were saying that rain is less likely the further north you go. If it’s something I can ride out of on the way up Saturday, I’m there. But my gear (mainly leaky boots and helmet) isn’t up to an all day rain event. We’ll see what the morning brings.

Well, If it is going to rain, I don't think I can make it. I ordered some waterproof boot that I had hoped to get today, but they won't be here until next week. The boots I have now leak like crazy, and make my 1 hour commute miserable. I can't imagine 10 hours in the rain with wet feet.

Hi Stromers, Hope every one got home safely.
I was home at 9 so not much trafic.
I'm asking for advises here.
When I got on the 87 highway I was almost alone so I open the throttle a bit and that was fine, until I notice a black car on the oposite direction that seem familiar to me, so I decreased my speeding and 5 sec later I had that black car in my miror with flashers on
The officer asked me if I know why he is pulling me over and I said probably I was speeding a bit. He said he caught me doing 80. so I showed him my speedo and told him that i don't have miles on it just km so I was a bit confuse
After a few min. he came back and gave me that ticket for DISOBEYED TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICE. He said that if he give me a speeding ticket it will cost me $300 something and i lose 4 points. So instead with the ticket he gave me (IF i PLEA GUILTY) I will probably lose 2 points and pay less than $200.
What I have to do is to sign it and mail it to Chesterfield town court.
BUT, they're is too section. section A = Plea of guilty and scetion B = Plea of not guilty. if I plea guilty I'm gone a have to show in court and I'm not familiar whit american laws so it's not my intention to do so.
My intention is to plea guilty but what's bothering me is that paragraph :
A plea of guilty to this charge is equivalent to a conviction after trial. If you are convicted, not only will you be liable to a penalty, but in addition your license to drive a motor vehicle or motorcycle, and your certificate of registration, if any, are subject to suspension and revocation as prescribed by law.
What should I do :(
Plea guilty or not guilty.
Thank's and despite that ticket, i had a very good time riding with you.
Stéphane
mike183
06-25-2006, 10:55 AM
Sorry to hear that.
Every place has different tickets and rules.
They even vary from city to city. Gets very confusing.
Best thing is to call and get an idea what you are to expect.
The way some tickets work is that there is a code# for the violation and there is a schedule of fines on the back of the ticket and that will tell you how much that ticket is worth.
If there is no schedule of fines and you plead guilty someone will decide and tell you what that amount is.
That threatening paragraph just means that you should be aware of what the penalties are to whatever you are pleading guilty to and that you are subject to them.
I got caught cutting between cars by the Holland Tunnel by the captain in charge of security for the tunnel. She was in an unmarked car with her bodyguard and threw the book at me. She mistook me for someone else that she saw quite often but was not able to catch. It was a personal appearance ticket. Pleaded to guilty to a zero points ticket but cost me $390. Just a revenue raiser for Jersey City. Every ticket they write by the tunnel is a personal apperarance so they get a larger share of the ticket plus court costs.

I just made it for the breakfast.
Never seen that many V-Stoms in my life.
Left my house at 5:10 am in Allendale, NJ with rain, thunder and lightning as I pulled the bike from the garage. Stopped raining after Albany. Great weather the rest of the day. Made it to Owls Head, NY via Keene, Upper Jay, Wilmington, Franklin Falls, Bloomingdale, Loon Lake via 99 to Owls Head.
That is a great stretch of roads. They start near "Veterans Memorial Highway" near Whiteface Mountian. The Veterans Highway goes to the top of Whiteface Mountain.
Passed you guys in the opposite direction south of Tupper Lake.
Made it home by 8:00 pm. 706 miles total.
Hi Stephane,
It was a pleasure to meet and ride with you :D Glad you made it home in one piece.
Same to you Mike except for the riding part. I was wondering who that lone Strom rider was, and was thinking that he should turn around and ride with us!
I agree with what Mike said. And, what I would do is just plead guilty and pay the fine. Usually you just sign the ticket and then mail in your part with a check for whatever the amount is. That way you don't have to go to court. At least that's the way it's always been for me.
I think that this is just notifying you that in case you did something a lot worse or had too many speeding tickets on your record, they could suspend or revoke your license.
I will post an Adirondack ride report soon.
Then, I'll be in the process of planning out a really good Northern Vermont/ New Hampshire ride. :D

Thank you Mike and Tom for your advises.
I'm going to plead guilty
But, after the speed we went on those nice twistie road that day  , you can imagine that 80 miles per hour on a straight desert highway is boring
Again, I must say that it was a must do again ride
Take care !

You should plead not guilty. I think your argument is very good (you over accelerated getting on the highway, your bike reads KPM, not MPH). Where I live, you check not guilty and mail it in, then they mail you out a court date. You show up at court, meet with the DA, and work out a deal with him, such as reduced fine, community service, or even having it thrown out completely. That's my 2 cents. Good luck.

Yes I too was extreeemmllly Pleased with the ride saturday. If only we had been a little luckier with weather :P !!! well it was a great time  I can't wait for the North east Vermont / N.W. New Hampshire trip....  Thanks for a great time and a great group of Riders to associate with .
STROMEUR: sorry to hear about the run in w/ the law But I would fight the ticket( Not Guilty) with the killometer conversion reason you stated to the police officer. RIDE SAFE & RIDE OFTEN!!!.

Ok now I have 2 for plead guilty and 2 for not guilty.
But, the ticket says : DISOBEYED TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICE.
I can't plead not guilty by giving the excuses of the killometer conversion.
Anyone have an exemple of DISOBEYED TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICE.

I'd ride with you guys again anytime! That was awesome, the best "rainy" day I've had in a long time.
Where to start heaping the praise: seeing 9 Stroms in a lineup, scenery, roads, miles, cameraderie, attempting to break the sound barrier on a strom, or maybe it was getting schooled on how to ride in the dirt by Profeessor jackpiner57?
Stromeur650, sorry to hear about your run-in there. The trouble with pleading not-guilty is you have to actually appear in court. What's the law on transferring points on your license between Canada and the US, if they don't show up, it may not be worth fighting?
Until next time, which hopefully isn't too far away...

Hey Guys,
So far, it looks like we all made if home OK. I didn't see any rain until I hit CT, this morning around 11:00 am. Other than that, what a grand ride.
Riding around the Adirondacks with all of you was indeed fun, even the dirt road. I wish that jackpiner57 would ride a bit more agressive next time. He was slowing me up. Actually, I looked more like this
Like I said, I'm more into riding for the aspect of life that a motorcycle can offer a rider. Meeting and riding with you guys was a great example.
stromeur650:
If you do plead not guilty, before you go to court, you can write the state prosecutor a letter that explains your side of the story. Many times they will drop the ticket.
Ride Safe Everyone

Maybe professor JackPiner can teach us some more about off road riding I was wide eye'd a couple times too  ( like how not to fill up on sand and dust before a meal) I understand there are some dirt roads in the northeast kingdom????Ride safe & often jack

I had a nice ride home. Went non-stop and rolled in at 8 PM. 9 south out of E’town was more of the same ( twisty , fast and the first 20 miles was 100% cage free).
I for one am very impressed with the Strom. This is the first time I was really able to put it through its paces. This bike really shines. (well at least it did before the trip down Perkins Clearing Road)
It was a pleasure riding with you all. Special thanks to Bruce for getting the ball rolling.
Attached link is a photo of the intended traffic for Perkins Clearing Road.

I had a great time riding with all of you! Thanks for putting up with me on Jessup River Road. About halfway through, I realized how much dust I was creating and slowed it down. Dirt roads are great if you are the first rider through. :P Thanks for waiting for me on my "detour" west on rt. 30.
Thanks Bruce for getting this ride together! The Adirondacks are beautiful. Especially Rt. 73 South from Lake Placid to Keene.
My ride home was awesome too. Rt. 17 from Chimney Point to Waitsfield was beautiful and Appalachian Gap was twisty heaven. I got home at 9:30pm.
I hope we can all get together again soon.
Too bad about the weather though.
