What is the price of your first service on a V-Strom?I was wondering if there is a large difference in different dealers. :?:

My sales invoice says the first service is $130 plus parts [ I assume oil and filter].

Mine was $137.00 and that included oil and filter.$15.00 for oil filter! :cry:

It's nice to have documentation on the bike, but I plan on keeping mine until its worn out. Oil changes are easy to do on the VS.

The items you should have checked are:

The head bearings I feel are one of the most important things to have check on the VS.

Buy yourselves a centerstand its much easier to service the bike.

Always keep the chain well serviced. The DL 1000 stretches the chain.
Sag has to be adjusted often. Best sag I find is 30mm or slightly under
1 1/4" . The manual says 20 - 30 mm. At 20mm the chain stretches more rapidly.

Retorque: Frame, Suspension, brackets and Exhaust bolts. The twin shakes its self apart. Use removable Locktite where you can. Especially those small bolts holding the rear plastic on behind the mufflers. I had the plastic bracket on the swing arm holding the brake line in place almost fall off.

Buy yourself two torque wrenches.One for torques just above 15ft/lbs and the other for heavy torqueing like the 72.5ft/lbs for the rear axle nut.

The Vs is a easy bike to work on because of the open design

I would like to learn how to drain the fuel tank incase you get some bad gas and to retorque the head bearings>

All you have to do is keep records and receipts for the parts you buy. I keep a record book of all the services, tires, filters, oil and anything else I do to the bike.

Mine was $83.63 including oil & filter.
Bike was not purchased from this dealer but this dealer went out of his way to look after me.
Was able to watch him do all the adjustments and took him a hour to do everything that was required.

Scooter, where can I find out the torque settings for all the bolts? Clymer manual? I was looking over the servicing guide in the owner's manual and it says to tighten the bolts when servicing...I agree, but I want to know the settings before I break something.:!:

I have the genuine Suzuki Manual but I would think the Clymer manual may be more detailed. They aren't cheap. Do not guess at the torque settings on the important stuff. If there is enough interest I could list all the torque setting or PM me with what you would like to know. I may have lucked out at work and have found a couple of pin wrenches for the head bearings that I can modify.

My first service was $80 including the oil and filter.

I don't know how everyone's service was so cheap. Mine came in at $290, with $240 of that being labor. I was floored when I picked it up yesterday; I was expecting something around $180. Anyway, I guess the labor rates are a little higher in DC, plus they said they spent three hours working on it. Luckily I didn't want to use that $300 on a Givi case, oh, wait, I did!

I did my service myself.... easy to do, less $$ and you know it is done!..... By the way the Rear Axel Nut is 76 ft lbs

Mine was $160 for labor.
I'm in an area where labor if not exactly cheap.

Did the first and second servicings myself, too. The bike has only been in the shop once- I wanted the steering head checked, so I wouldn't worry.

My dealer charges $65 per hour labor. My first service came to $91 tax included.
