I'm planning to ride from FL to NY (and Nantucket) and back from 9/11/09 through 9/27/09.

I want to ride as much as I can make practical of the Blue Ridge Parkway. I also want to take on some (all??) of the Tail of the Dragon. I have never done any rides like either of those since I started riding earlier this year.

Now, I don't even know yet whether I'll be trying to hit these on the way north or on the way south--but it's much more likely that it will be on the way south. My itinerary is pretty up-in-the-air, but I have to leave FL on Friday 9/11 and reach NY by Sunday night at the latest, since I then will join my dad for the Monday morning trip from L.I. to Nantucket. There may not be time to be traversing hither and thither across NC and VA until the more leisurely trip south back to Florida.

Since I will probably be attempting these rides on the way south, can anyone help me with info, or links to threads that are specifically about approaching those from the NY area? That would be much appreciated.

Say 'Hello' to LI for me. My wife and I lived in Rocky Point and worked in P.J. and S.B. for fifteen years. I started riding in Winston-Salem, NC and spent some time on the region of the BRP between N. Wilksboro and Fancy Gap. I have no real advice, except don't push your tank range - gas stations in places can be hard to find if you don't know where they are.

Heh, that's a good point. I thought about getting a 1-gallon plastic gas can and lashing it down, but ...ehhh, I dunno. I'm going to have a big ol' duffel bag back there, and the gas can would have to sit on top of it. I'm not even sure if there are legality issues about carrying a gas can like that. Anyone know? It's probably something I could do, but I just don't know if I (a) need it, (b) will have no problems keeping it in place with the luggage load I'll be carrying, and (c) will encounter smokies who might hassle me about it.
