Looking at my risers, I see smooth, round-looking things instead of hex heads. I assume these are covers of some kind. How do I get these out?

Carefully pull them out with some needle nose pliers. They don't take much effort. I have a pair that are rubber tipped, you can also wrap them with tape to avoid scratching.

The covers are chromed plastic. Just slip a knife blade under the edge and pry up. They'll pop right off.

Get out the propane torch you use for soldering. Heat the covers with the direct flame and they will, eventually, disappear. :D

They also disappear when you use a knife blade to flick them off.:angel_13:

Cool.....should I make an effort to keep them? Is it just an appearance thing, or would not having them allow rust to show up, etc.?

Appearance only is involved. There is no protection.
