View Full Version : Vstrom won't rev

My '03 DL1000 has 40K miles. During my last trip, I noticed that it seemed reluctant to rev over about 6K rpm. I do most of my riding at around 4K rpm. Checked again at home on the highway and the power just flattens out at around 6K or so in (probably) 2nd gear or maybe 3rd gear. I realize it is limited in 5th and 6th gears but this is something else and something recent. In the past it seems to me I could abuse it fully. It's a bit overdue for TBS but that never caused this symptom before and I can't think why it would. During the trip, I seem to remember one instance when it flattened like it is doing now but after a little pause (almost a second) it took off. When problems come and go, I first tend to suspect something electrical. Any ideas?
Thanks,
John Hjersman

All that info matches the symptoms of a clogged fuel filter. http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,3981.0.html shows how to check the fuel flow rate. http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/board,15.0.html has sticky threads on a bypass workaround and other fixes.

I agree with Greywolf.

Your symptoms sound like a match to what I was experiencing as well.

If the flow rate indicates a plugged filter you have a couple of options as mentioned here on this site. You can replace the filter with a new OEM part for $$$, you can bypass the filter and install an inline filter as explained on VSRI or you can find a used GSXR pump assembly which will work in place of the Strom pump if you swap over the gauge sending unit.

I've seen the GSXR pumps assemblies on ebay for less than $40, my bypass mod cost me less than $20 but was a PITA.

When I was going through my issues I found that some fuel injection cleaner would clear it up, for about 2 days or 800 miles.

It would then start acting back up again.

Of course I was getting the telltale high-pitched scream from the fuel pump area at the same time...
