I'd like to figure out this irregular noise that's coming from my 2006 Vstrom 650. When I first start the bike, the noise isn't there. Once I give it some gas (open the thorttle), I could hear a distinct buzzing / almost whining like type of noise. I can't tell if it's electrical or mechanical. I've put my ear next to the right side of the engine and that area doesn't seem to be the source. I've listened near the exhaust and it's not there. It is most audible when I listen from above, in the area between the front of the gas tank and the instrument display. I changed the air filter recently as I thought the air path was obstructed but the noise was still there. It almost sounds like some type of pump that's trying but not getting the job done. Could it be an oil pump that engages when the throttle is opened up? The bike rides fine, the RPM's are fine and the engine doesn't die on me but I don't like hearing something that wasn't there before. The bike now has just over 20,000 miles and it has only required regular maintenance up to this point. Please help if you can.

It could be the fuel pump. If the filter starts getting clogged, it gets noisy.

Do I clean the filter in the fuel pump or do I replace the entire fuel pump?

First test the fuel pump output to see if it is low. If it is, you can replace the filter, replace the entire pump for not a lot more than the filter, or do a modification to put on an external filter that costs much less and is easier to replace in the future. See:

Oddly enough, the noise seems to have subsided. Maybe whatever was blocking the fuel (if that was the problem) got sucked through and burned up in the pistons. Good thing cause looking at the instructions on modifications to the fuel filter looked like more than I want to get into right now. Thanks for your help guys. See you out on the roads.

I once had a buzz that turned out to be the hold down clamp on a Zumo GPS mount. Leave it up and it buzzes. Putting it in the down position even though the unit was not present stopped the buzzing. All kinds of things can cause strange noises.
