I just got back from 3 days in Baja, the v-strom amazed me and the others, 2 on 1150 GSA, 1 on 100 GSPD, and 1 on KTm 950 adventure. We crossed the border at Tecate, before we crossed we weighed our bikes at the CHP , mine weighed 900 lbs with my 200 lbs on it. We left the pavement at Santo Tomas and rode about 30 miles off road to the coast. I got to watch the 100 GSPD go down twice, the last time he was almost upside down. I unloaded my gear and went for a dirt ride with a 1150 GSA and KTM 950, the v-strom stayed with them all day with no problems,
(except scraping the center stand alot). The 1150 had TKC tires and the 950 had some dunlop dirt tires, my strom still had stock Trail Wings.Don't be afraid to take it off road, it will go anywhere the other big trail bikes will go can't wait for the next trip.
