Hi,

I have a Givi Monokey 49 (something like that) pack on the back of my Vstrom. Is there a trick to getting the latch to hold solid, because depending on how much I put in it, it can be 'pursuaded' to open with a bit of pressure.

I push in on the latch cantilever pretty hard. Still releases under a full load.

Maybe you just can't fill them up as much as it would seem?

How "full" are we talking?

You have to make sure there isn't anything interfering with the lock mechanism or the seal.

There's enough room for a standard size human head and 1 leg or 2 arms, depending on the cut.

You can just sorta stuff the ropes and chains into the empty spaces.

You're welcome...

Regardless of the cut, they'd be stinkin' pretty bad in the heat from the last few days. :bom_evilgrin:

You are unlocking it with the key, opening it in the unlocked position then closing it, latching it and locking it with the key I hope. It sounds like you may be latching it and pushing on it. It cannot be latched without the key.

Yeah,

I def. use the key to open and close it. And I have placed a head(helmet), 2 legs (shin/knee guards) and hands (gloves) in it.

Okay...fine...I stuck my whole fieldsheer jacket in there on top (took the helmet OUT of there when I did this)

It looks like it is all good, like clearances are good. But the latch doesn't quite grab. I guess I am just overloading it. Even though it LOOKS like it fits fine, maybe it is expanding the base out a little, making the latch not clamp down properly.

I did notice if I close it with the latch assembly already pressed in, that it doesn't 'click' so much. And it is at this time that I am able to easily pry it open, even after keying it closed.

So I tried popping the latch assembly out and then closing clover, holding down, then pressing in. This seems to catch better, but I'm still leary.

I would hate for all my body parts to come out all over the highway

Givi Monokey latches are NOT supposed to forced it closed with the key already removed (in the locked position). That is the whole reason why the key cannot be removed with the latch unlocked. You are supposed to close the latch in the unlocked position and THEN lock the case and remove the key. If you have been forcing the latch closed with the key already removed, chances are that you have damaged the latch and that is why it will not stay closed when you put pressure on it. My top case is 5 years old, and I have never had the latch pop open, no matter how much I overload the case.

No I always have the key in the open position when closing or opening...

I think for some reason mine just doesn't pop out all the way when the key is rotated to open, it just rests loosely against the latch lip, and I am now seeing that if I pop it out completely, then close lid, then push in with lid fairly tight, and turn key it seems to catch better.

I'm having a hard time understanding how a Monokey Givi box could be so difficult to operate properly.

IMO, 2 possibilities;

1. Defective or broken product

2. User error
