Make sure you rake thru the ashes and check the bottom of the pit for buried treasures like pipe bombs, rifle rounds, propane canisters, shotgun shells, aerosol cans, flashlight batteries...anything that'll explode when heated under your pretty little weiner-roaster.

That's actually not a bad idea. You never know what the previous campers threw int here as they were leaving camp. A mostly-empty propane canister could really screw up your camping trip if you built a fire on top of it!
