View Full Version : Do men's jackets work for women?

My fiancee just got me this jacket and I like it well enough. We need something for her as well, they have it in small which would probably fit. Are there significant differences between men's and women's jackets besides the obvious? She's on the low side of a B cup.

The women I know don't like men's jackets.

I only wear mens jackets, actually. Womens tall is hard to find, and when you do find it, it's like they slapped an extra inch or two onto the ends of the sleeves but didn't bother to make the torso any longer. That's just me and my body shape, though. I'd say the average woman is going to be more comfortable in womens' gear.

I think that it mostly depends on your gal, how she's built, and how particular she is...
She's not big breasted so that shouldn't be a problem.

Take her shopping in a local store and check out different jackets in both mens and womens and go from there...

It depends on how your friend is built. I have to buy an extra large guys size or I can't zip them up over my breasts:D. Some women have really wide hips, and that can be an issue as well. Generally speaking, garments tailored for the appropriate gender are best.

//It depends on the manufacturer and cut. But they have the combined Fieldsheer sizing chart there, so check it out.

Note that a men's small is 38-40 chest and 33-34 sleeve, while a women's L and XL have a 25-26" sleeve, so that may not fly.

Um,... thanks?

She has hips, but this jacket doesn't really come down that far. Because of her bust size, much of the women's gear is too roomy up top. I was going to take her measurements and look at the men's chart, but just thought I'd ask the general question. She normally wears women's medium, so the men's small might still be too big.

Getting to a motorcycle shop to try stuff on is harder now that my local shop closed.

My wife has a mans jacket, and she can even wear one of mine - which admitted has a double zip position.

I'd certainly suggest looking at the mens size jackets, there's probably a better choice if she isn't "large" at the chest or hips.

My wife bought a jacket today. The men's jackets that fitted her had arms that were far too long.

The women's jackets also had zip-up darts at the sides to allow a bit more room over the hips.

I have 3 mens' jackets (one marketed as women's but I've seen men wearing it and it's a mens' cut) and a great women's mesh jacket. Wish there had been more women's stuff readily available when I started purchasing.

The fit on the men's jackets is just fine. I think I'm in the general range of your wife's size. There's more likely to be a decent sleeve length if she has longish arms, but I have never found this a particular factor. Generally they're just not cut in around the waist, but that allows more room in the pockets. The only reason I now buy womens' is for the finer fit and because I find that I am treated better on the road by drivers if I make it obvious that I'm a woman.

But there IS a lot of women's stuff out there now and it's not too hard fitting using on-line charts.

Your original post was from back in mid July, so I assume you have already made your purchase. But if not you may want to check out Bob's BMW in Jessup.

Bob's typically carries more woman's jackets than any of the other shops in the Wash/Balt. area. And though their woman's selection isn't huge, it may be enough to get you thinking on the right track after trying a few on.

I bought a woman's Olympia jacket from Bob's last Fall for $40. It was a closeout model that originally listed for $180. It was a great find!

Thanks, that was a great find.
I bought her a summer mesh jacket but will need something warmer if I'm ever to get her on the bike when the temp is below 70.
I use to work down the road from Bob's, will have to drag her up there.

I have a leather jacket of the same shape and design. Works fine, not flattering because not shaped in at waist, but allows more room for pockets.

No, men's gear does not fit like gear made for a woman's shape. Does that solve the problem? Not at all, because it is hard to find. I suggest looking at other female only forums and asking other female riders. Of course, it also depends on your shape and size.

Good luck....
