View Full Version : Whats your favorite windscreen position?
I just bought the Madstad bracket and I LOVE IT! Best farkle by a mile!
So, whats your favorite position? I like mine to be lowest and kicked out far forward so the screen almost lays flat. NO buffeting at all!
YOU?

Now spend another $125 on a GIVI screen and you will be extatic.

With the Madstad, low and tilted 2/3 back.
Without the the fancy bracket I really think the best position for the widscreen is on a shelf in the garage.

I agree with that!

I would, but I am afraid that the Givi would be too large and it would bring back the buffeting. I believe the buffeting is gone because the screen is now low and making less of a hole through the air. Right now, i am getting just enough air hitting the upper half of my helmet.
I dunno, I am pretty happy.

I have a Secdem windshield, use the Mad brkt bolted on in the lowest position, and the screen generally slid down to the lowest, and abit less than half way back.
Here is another method I just found that totally eliminated any remaining turbulance and noise around my helmet:

I always have my shield all the way back at the top. My Madstad is mounted in the suggested middle setting on the bike.
My favourite height with the stock shield is either all the way up or all the way down. (Before Corbin seat was always all the way up). That depends on my mood, the temperature, the headwind, the amount of traffic, and the winds. I have been known to change it a couple of times in my 45 minute commute to work.
With my Givi shield it is usually all the way up, but if the temperature really goes up I'll put it all the way down (and then put back the stock shield when I get home.)
The GIVI is much quieter than the Stock, but the stock is fine when all the way down and I am in cleaner airflow.
Be aware, though, that there is no answer that will work for everyone. The effect of your height, your seat, your mirrors, the temperature, the air pressure the spring preload on your bike, the presence or absence of cases on the back and side, the presence of a tank bag, the wind speed and direction, the speeds you ride at, the traffic, the type of helmet you use, whether you have vortex generators and how you hold your tongue all change the way the airflows interact from day to day.

just got back from a 2,000 mile trip to Clark CO and back (Oklahoma). Buffeting was either non-existent or terrible. regardless of MP Cycle shield and MadStad.
My opinion is: when it's great it doesn't matter where it's set and when it sucks it doesn't matter where it's set... seems to me if it's really windy, if it's a bad angle to you you're scrod no matter what.

The Madstad did nothing to help? Really?

Stock windscreen. Preferably upright. I don't mind bugs or dirt.

Thought I resolved it with a Rifle +5" Screen & bracket, but under certain conditions still had buffeting. Tried the stock windscreen in all positions, stock windscreen & Cee Bailey screen, don't know exact height of the Cee Bailey screen, both with Madstad in many postions each, different helmet, and never resolved "my" buffeting problem until using a very short screen. I am 6' tall with a 31.5" inseam. Modified & made R & D windscreens, eventually purchased a MP mini screen giving the look I preferred allowing smooth airflow around my helmet and very pleased with it. Previous bike was a naked SV650 that had smooth air flow around my helmet. Works well with my two-way radio/intercom system, too.

I AM a fan of the Madstad... and of course we all know those aftermarket screens are pricey. I picked "MP" to try and mostly it's good. I'm just sayin' sometimes no matter what I do, even pull over and adjust the angle or height, the buffeting is a bit--. Many other times I think, "this is perfect!"
What I would love to find out though is if were on a HD or some other bike rigged out for long haul traveling, is there EVER bad buffeting? maybe some days that's just the way it is, you are on a bike after all, OR, are those HD and Wing riders in no-buffet bliss all the time?
OR did I get the wrong windshield for "me?" and my size/riding position?
the prob is, it can be an endless search. When I was in the mountains it was fabulous all day every day. Coming south, back into the windy plains, it was tough sledding much more of the way.
and finally, I think my helmet is part of the prob. If I open my faceshield to the first "stop," it is markedly quieter (!!!) but I risk having something hit me in the eye (which happened btw).
so on it goes. open for advice - thanks -

Rode a friend's 07 BMW R1200RT with electric windscreen and could adjust the windscreen while riding to make a calm bubble behind it. Not sure if he installed an aftermarket windscreen. Have a friend with an 08 GoldWing and he does not have buffet problems. The top of the Wing windscreen is above his eye level. The BMW & Wing have much wider screens without mirror clearance issues.

thanks Bill.. obviously we're talking about bikes that cost a lot more... but on a long ride that head banging is a drag, and not good for the ears no matter how great my earplugs are. I'd love to "get it done" on the Wee... but that crap-shoot of buying stuff bugs me too, w/o knowing if it'll work..
there is a gigunda Honda dealer in a neighboring town that (I think) will let me test drive a bike or two.. If I can get one of theirs on the road at 80 mph in the wind and see how it does it might be informative one way or another. Same with the big HD dealer up the road.
otherwise my bike is fantastic and suits me well.

My favorite bikes are the Vstrom and KLR. Ride several times weekly in the NC mountains mostly twistys, sweepers, and off pavement, weather permitting. Looked at the long haul "expensive" touring machines, but the KLR & Vstrom are perfect for my day ride needs. I like smooth air flow around my helmet, so the MP mini screen works great for me using 33db ear plugs. Have to wear plugs to reduce the volume of my two-way/intercom radio system, allowing the communication system to work well up to 70MPH. Noticed some nice 90s Wings for sale around $6500 on a GoldWing forum.

My favorite position is behind the windshield. I find I get a lot less wind buffeting than when sitting in front of it. ;-)

YOU?
At the moment I have the stock shield almost up all the way, and just slightly tilted back. I still have some buffeting, but can open my helmet shield at freeway speeds without any real wind effects to my eyes.
The Givi shield should be here this week, wider and taller.

Please let us know what you think of the Givi on this post. I am considering getting one.

The screen can be mounted on the Madstad bracket upside-down, making a shorty 'sport' screen. I haven't ridden with it mounted that way though I should have tried it on Friday while riding the canyons of N central OR where we saw 104F/40C :mod2_excl:
I've also thought of just removing the screen during really hot weather. Can anyone report on how well that works?

Here's my thoughts on the buffetting. From what I experienced so far it seems that a major source of the problem is not getting enough air under the shield. Even the Windstrom Manta, that has been on the most, gave me troubles on the stock bracket until it was spaced out. 1/4" spacers under the lower bolts solved the problem.
Installed a madstad bracket last summer and cant find a bad position now with the Manta shield. I think this is due to the fact that the bracket sets the shield farther out from the faring.
With the stock shield on the bracket the more it's tipped up (and closes off the gap) the more I notice some buffeting. My 2 cents.

Stock screen in the non official fourth position. Tried that about 6 weeks ago and that is how it will stay.:)
