View Full Version : Edmonton Riders?
Just picked up my 03' DL1000 and took it for the first ride today. I am impressed it is a nicer bike than I imagined. Just wondering if there are any other Edmonton riders on this forum.
Thanks

BGS, it is nice to hear another Strom is on the road. I used to live in Edmonton until last year but moved to a nicer climate after retiring. Where did you find the bike ? What color and future plans for farkles ?
I was looking at the ST1300 to begin with - nice bike - but the combination of the salesmen and price tag turned me off. I went shopping for either a metric cruiser or sport/adventure touring. I ended up @ Alberta Cycle, the salesmen gave me space and I sat on a few bikes before I went and asked for some help (my style of selling). That was the forst day I had even heard of the strom, and much like my wife I knew the moment I tried her out I had to have it. This was January, so knowing what bike I wanted I decided to wait rather than have a bike sitting in my garage with snow on the ground. Last week I went back to Alberta Cycle to sign the papers on a K6 and saw the 03' sitting over in the corner, 17K and set up the way I wanted it - done.
It has the silver/grey color matched Suzuki Kappa 3pce luggage, heated grips, brand new tires, chain and sprockets, 165watt headlights, Givi engine guard, center stand, IMC 100 intercom, rotor lock, and tank bag, and a tall windshield with lanmar lips, .
When I went to pick the bike up on Thursday night there was no clutch fluid left, it was leaking from the slave cylinder. Being the night before easter long weekend no one had a new slave cylinder in stock and it would have to some from Vancouver (a week away). So Saturday morning I called around and found a replacement seal cup, took my work truck to the dealership fixed it there. There was a ridge worn into the body of the housing so with a little creative dremel polishing, paitience and DOT 4 I was on my way.
I picked up a Joe Rocket "AlterEgo" riding jacket, seems like the right jacket for Alberta where we can have a 30 degree temp swing in an afternoon. I will likely pick up a heated vest and textile riding pants soon. Other "Farkles"...... Well I bought a K&N air filter, I am going to ride it for a while but I think bar risers are in the cards.
First ride impressions, I need to set up the suspension, the oil and preload on the front fork are too light and it tends to dive. I cranked up the rear and it seems good for around town riding (this will take some more time). The bike seems to have a rough stumble/bog/I dunno @ 2800-3800 RPM, there is a really different tone to the exhaust (Alberta Cycle has a Yosh and I will try the remapping). All in all I am pleased.
And now it is snowing, no riding this morning......
Happy Easter

Morning BGS, that is a nice bike. I saw it a while ago when I was in Edmonton snooping around and killing time. I agree with the attitude there too. The sales people don't hover around like vultures ready to eat you. Spent some money there but blew it when I realized later that I should have bought one of the gel seats on the showroom bikes. Have one on back-order now.
Enjoy the Strom and keep the shiny side up............... Humbug, it is raining here again.

Hi BGS
I just bought my sons 05 650 in blue after riding it for the last few days. I think it will be a great fit for the next few years. I work way up north and the road in to camp is real rough for the last 60k. I have only one complaint, the seat sucks. I may be spoiled after parking my fat arse on an 04 wing for 2 years. The great part is I will be able to check out all those trails that I have always wondered about. My boy had the bike set up with heated grips, happy trails racks and bags and center stand. So all I need now is skid plate, engine bars and some more aggresive tires. Glad to hear there is some local Stromtroopers. Got to run I am heading back north in the morning. cheers.....Mick.

G'day Alberta Stromers!
This winter my wife tried talking me into a GoldWing for passenger comfort. Now she has taken wings herself on a lightblue 06 650
We live on the farm north of Edmonton, the wee stroms are perfect. Both bikes (mine is a blue 05 650) are set up with cold weather gear to extend the riding season as much as possible.
Cheers,
Martin

Good for you and your wife. I am sure you will both be thrilled to ride around and enjoy the scenery. If your wife finds the Wee a little too tall there are lowering kits available, just do a search here on the forum.

Are you talking about travel alberta (http://www.rfhl.info/s-travel-alberta.html) or something else?! Umm. There is a good page for travel alberta perhaps!
Also, you can find some other content on it,such as hypothek (http://www.rfhl.info/s-hypothek.html) or fernglas (http://www.rfhl.info/s-fernglas.html) or free gay chat (http://www.rfhl.info/s-free-gay-chat.html).
You can search on the homepage (http://www.rfhl.info) try some other keywords,no ads even.these page updated every day.Because of the huge database,it perhaps not very fast,if you don't like it,take it easy.

LOL!Good job and go on talking plz, boys :)
Wow - free gay chat - just what I always wanted!
Gotta love spammers.
So update - got 1500K on the Strom now - A few of the tings I am going to change are:
- change the fork oil and springs to stiffen it up a bit (keep it from diving so much)
- Replace the shifter lever with the Tourtech unit
- Order an MP Cycle touring shield
- Install Throttlemeister bar end weights and cruise
- Install Brake light in the Top Kappa luggage
Some of the things I have done so far are:
changed the oil to Amsoil 0W40 Synthetic and that has made a huge difference in the shifting and clutch.
changed from Premuim to Regular fuel, I gotta say I was pretty sceptical about this, I have always run premium in my bikes, better fuel economy, all the power - no negative side effects at all!
Installed K&N air filter, have not noticed a difference at all other than a little bit more intake noise (but I like having a re-useable filter)
I have it booked in @ the local dealership to get the ECM remapped this should get rid of the anoying 3-4K rumble/stumble.
So long for now - If you want to go for a ride in the Edmonton area post back and we'll hit the Rockies for a day.

The manual calls for 10-40 oil, not 0W-40. Do you have a particular reason for choosing this weight oil ? I use 10-40 amsoil myself.
The difference in the 0W40 and the 10W40 is only in lower temp oil flow characteristics. The upper temp. viscosity and sheer strength are identical. That and I can buy 0W40 Amsoil @ Canuk Tire on sale for $7.99/L +++ all the enviro and disposal fees.
It is kind of a semi educated gamble... any techies have anything to add?

Check the label for that circle that tells you if it is a fuel saver oil. I can never think of the exact wording but if it is, then it contains molifiers that can do harm to clutches. 10-40 and above does not contain these molifiers. Can Tire here only had 10-30 and 0-40 so I had to pass. Read some of the oil debates here, they are very informative and of course opinionated. Ride On.
The bottle is lables "Powersports" Approved for use in wet clutch systems. Not the automotive grade oil, designed for sleds, quads, motorcycles. True the oil debates are interesting, everything from Diesel formulas to super duper motorcycle grade. For not the clutch seems quieter, and the bike seems to run smoother. Check it out this oil is in with the 2 stroke and gear oils.

Hey now ! Be nice will ya. I heard the tone of your voice. lol. . Don't go dissin my old home town unless you lived there once and moved away. Edmonton is actually a great city in the middle of nowhere on the flat bald prairies. The greater Edmonton area has approx 1 Million folks and I used to be able to reach out and touch them all with the push of a button. The boss didn't like that much. But so much fun.

Me thinks our friend from Kamelpoops is sportin' for a smack up the side of his head with a hockey stick....lol. He is just jealous cause Kamloops doesn't have enough flat ground for a rink.
I am lucky enough to have Oiler's season tickets (and playoff tickets for all games). Salivating at the thought of what it is going to be like next Saturday).
