View Full Version : Not so bright headlite cut-out switch idea

First a little history. I'm fairly adept at 12 volt stuff and have a shop full of parts so I decided to not buy the Eastern Beaver headlite cut-out harnesses and do something else. I cut the ground leads to each headlite, planning to run the leads thru simple 2-pole switches, one for each headlight.

Fortunately I always wire stuff on a temporary basis before drilling holes, soldering, etc. I discovered that even with the ground wires cut the lites still come on dimly so they must be getting enough residual ground thru the headlite housing to partially illuminate.

I spent the next hour repairing the damage more or less back to stock. I'll be contacting Mr. Beaver next.

By the way, this project would work with a switch interrupting either of the hot leads to the lites.

Cut the ground and the electrons go through the other filaments to reach ground.

People told me this would happen, which is why I make mine so the switch works on the hot leads only.

I installed one of Jim's (Eastern Beaver) headlight cut-outs a few weeks ago. Works great and could not have been easier to install. :D

It really does pay to not try and reinvent the wheel...
