So i just bought a 2008 dl650 and I am thrilled. I got it with givi side cases, a center stand, and hand guards. My question is what should I invest in next? The guy that had it before me used it as a commuter, but I plan on taking it to the arctic circle. I guess I looking for opinions on what farkles you all think I can't live without.

1) Sweet LED's to line your bike, and the underside (including the valve stems).
2) Flame thrower
3) Put spikes in the tires (even if theres no snow)-- makes a cool sound
4)Baseball card somewhere near the tire or chain to make it sound like a beast.
ok, on a serious note, I would get a nice seat for those long trips. I would recomend one, but everyone would jump on me and say that the one they use is better. Just get one that feels good on your butt.

ANY tires but the stock ones. But seriously, take a long look at what's available in tires.
Oiler (Scott, Hawk, etc.) would also help.

Thanks for the suggestions (I am making a wish list). Keep the ideas coming. I am also wondering about tires. My trip to Alaska will be mostly paved, but the last part will have a lot of dirt road. I want something that will be aggressive enough for dirt, but won't burn up to quick on the road. Any ideas?

If you are running with luggage and plan to exceed 80mph or ride at decent speeds on unpaved roads, a Scotts steering stabilizer is number one on my list. If I had one on my '05, I'd probably still have it instead of some scars and metal hand bones.

Artice Circle . . . nice. I don't have first-hand experience with the ride, but from what I understand, folks have better luck putting on more aggressive rubber once they're in Alaska. If you start out in the lower 48 with knobs, they'll be gone by the time you get up there. You could probably find a dealer in Anchorage or Fairbanks that could get you squared away quickly with new rubber if you made prior arrangements--that's the way the guys I know who've done that trip have handled it.
While I don't have experience on the new Tourances, the old ones have been a great mix of on and off road for my wee-strom. It's not uncommon to get between 8k and 10k miles out of a set, either.
Beyond that, my fave farkle besides the madstad is my heated vest. There are tons of options to choose from, but the ROI in terms of riding comfort in less than pleasant temps is worth the $$$.
Have a good ride.

The best skidplate you can afford if you're heading North. You might want to consider a rad guard as well. Headlight protectors may also be an asset.
