Bought mine just east of Pittsburgh on 05/15/04.

Got 650 in Black / 2 helmets (his and hers HJC)
tax / 6%
PA tags $25.00

OUT THE DOOR $6130.00

I thought it was a good deal (mrs vstrom was reluctant but agreed).

Luckily (for you, that is... ) in US you don't have to pay same kind of vehicle taxes as we have in Finland: list price over here for a new DL650 is 10.900 EUR (13.300 US$)! Still a bargain compared to a DL1000 with a 16.700 EUR (20.400 US$) price-tag...

 True, but I'd rather be lucky than good anyday. That's rediculous, doubling the price of the bike.

Here in Italy the official price is EUR 6980.
Then you have to add taxes for public registration, EUR 270.
Annual tax is roughly EUR 65.
Total is EUR 7315.
It is around $ 8900.

I received a 5% discount by my dealer and I was happy with it.

It seems that in the old continent prices are higher than yours.... :(

You guys have been getting some great deals! Out here in the Pacific Northwest, the prices start at MSRP and then the dealers try to add on as many extra charges as they think they can get away with.

It's really disgusting that they operate that way, but it's a free country. Anyone have any theories on why prices vary in different parts of the country? I've heard that Suzuki pays for shipping, so I don't think that's it.

I've given up trying to buy a 2004 DL650 and have started working on a couple of dealers to order me a 2005 at a good discount. Don't know how low they will go yet, since they won't have the 2005 prices until early September.

If I can't find a good deal this Fall/Winter, maybe I'll fly back to the Midwest, buy a bike there and ride it home. If anyone wants to sell their 650 in Oregon or Washington in the next few months, drop me a line!

We bought two at $6400 each (DOES NOT INCLUDE: state tax, licensing, registration, DOES include other sneaky charges like freight, handling)

It was a real pain to even get the price that low. I see from the other post that my salesman should be quite happy! We did get 20% discount on parts & clothing accessories. And we had a lot of accessories to get since we are newbies. So possibly saved $400 there.

MSRP is $6600 according to Suzuki web site.

So.... we overpaid by a bit. But nice to know that we did get TOTALLY taken? Ok, some more justification.... price we paid is still cheaper than BMW650 :?

Hope this helps the rest of you out there.

Gee I left out an important word "NOT" in my prior posted reply... I should have said ....

Hey Grumpy,

Are they calling that new batch of Stroms 2004s or 2005s?

Thanks,

Hey grumpy....I just checked LaCycleSports...finally a low price in CA! Well, $6400 OTD, but better than the $7600 I was quoted here in the SF Bay Area last weekend.
Did you ride the bike back? Trailer?
Very curious about these LaCycle guys! How did the transaction go?
Thanks, Tom.

It's a 04, I talked to Larry the owner. I told hwy 1 back.... the transaction went very smoothly.....BUT, even though I stressed ( twice). that it's a long trip home, please make sure the prep is done properly. IT WAS NOT DONE...will take that issue up with Suzuki of America. After Sportbike Dynamics (707-762-6700) worked his magic, it was a different bike!!

grumpy, could you elaborate on the prep issue? Sorry to be a pest, but I think a lot of guys in the SF Bay Area are considering using these guys in LA.
BTW, I was thinking about Hwy. 1 as a break-in road for the new bike, too..South to North -- great road!
TIA Tom

As I mentioned the bike handled badly on Hwy 1 with crosswind....many reviews and forums stated as such, but it was so bad that I had a hard time keeping it on my side of the road. Took the dl to Sportbike Dynamics and found the following:

1) All nuts/ bolts/ engine case were loose.
2) 24 lbs on front/ 31 rear. should be 33/ 36. Safety issue!
3) ALL hose clamps were loose.
4) Air in BOTH front and back brakes. Safety issue.
5) Battery was low, drawing 18.5 amps.....bolts to post was loose!
6) Waterpump tube NOT rad. overflow, dripping...warranty issue.

After the tires were inflated to proper psi and tighten up suspension, the handling problem went away.....like a different bike!!

.

I hope this helps 8) 8)

Thanks grumpy, that helps quite a bit.
They say they don't charge for set-up and maybe you get what you pay for. Maybe the thing to do is to plan on spending a little time in LA checking bolts and so on before I hit the road....
I've also heard similar stories from dealerships that DO charge a lot for set-up. I guess once we hand over the money we're on our own.

Hello Everyone...I've been reading all the info on this site and many others for the last 2 months while researching which bike to buy. I bought the V-Strom 650 last Saturday and had 370 miles on her by the end of the next day. What a great bike! The perfect choice for me (first street bike and I'm 6'2" at 220lb).

I would like to throw some break in questions at you old timers. I know what the dealer and the manual suggest...but I live in San Jose and I can't use the carpool lane if I can't go 65mph(on my bike at 5 grand the speedo reads 65). On top of that, I wan't to feel this baby out. What should I be worried about? Can I rev it past 5 grand with only 400 miles on her? I appreciate any input.

BTW: I got the bike for 6400 OTD at Tulare Kawasaki/Suzuki in Tulare CA. Talk to the owner, Ron.

cw, you'll get as many different opinions on this as you do replies. IMO, just ride it like you normally would, with the exceptions of 1. don't hold it at one steady throttle position for long periods of time, vary the throttle and 2. DO give it some WOT rips, but short ones. I do this up to around 1000 miles, after that, while it may not be 100% broken in, you're not going to hurt it, driving sanely, of course. 1 oil change early on is good, of course, maybe 500 miles?

Thanks for the replies. Today I rode the bike a little more aggressive to see what she is made of and let me just say...me likey. I will continue to follow your suggestions.

Do you have any comments on the buzzyness of the engine in the 6k+ range? I notice that in the higher revs, the engine is really loud and buzzy. Is this normal? Will it quiet down as it gets broken in? Thanks.

DooFighter

If you mean it is a loud exhaust note, I think it may be you're just not used to bikes. Both DLs are pretty quiet with stock exhaust. If you mean mechanical sounds from the engine, twins do that a lot.

Buzziness? Again, could be your unfamiliarity. You need to ride some other bikes, then you'll really experience "a buzz." LOL I don't own a DL yet, but have ridden both the 1k and the lil guy. Both were smooth in my experience with the little guy being a bit smoother. I don't know what else to tell ya, unless there's something wrong with the bike???

Pauljo

Ha! Want to experience "Buzz"? Redline a Kawasaki Concours! That was my last bike, and despite it's high rpm buzz, I rode it for 6 years. The V-Strom is very smooth in comparison. I'll take the V-Twin power pulses over inline 4 cyl tingle anytime.
