I do not know how this happened, but was riding in a down-pour the other day and notice I have water in my engine oil reservoir. I removed the cap and noted a milky film on the inside of the cap. What is the best method for flushing out the water?

Thanks,

If it's just a milky film...
...then ride it 'til it's good and warm, then ride it for another 1/2 hour or so &
VOILA! IT WILL BE GONE!

If you have more water than a milky film, first check your coolant level. If it's fine, then drain and replace oil along with filter.

Why did the water get inside? Perhaps I cracked the head when I started the engine when it was 8 degrees F outside?

Back to the proverbial drawing board....

If I was this guy, I would not have asked the questions I did and would have spoken in English!

Water pump seals, Head gasket, the kids put the water hose in your exhaust pipe, kids pulled the oil filler plug and added water. Is your coolant level low?

Mine was the same today when I stopped at the gas station.;)
Some moisture in the sight window or on the filler plug is normal and should not cause a problem for the engine.

If your crankcase oil looks like a chocolate milk shake then there could be a problem.
If unsure drain the oil and see, you can always put the oil back in if you keep it clean.
Takes about five minutes if you don't have skid plates.

I went for a good 30km blast out the highway and back. No more moisture in the window.

It takes longer for the engine crankcases and oil to get hot enough to evaporate the moisture.
Until the engine heats up there is also more blowby into the crankcase.
Short trips are bad for most any engine.

Good to check everything as Mortaine suggested.

Short trips will add to the moisture problem so it's a good excuse to go for a long ride.;)

Upon further investigation. I realized that my water pump seals failed, causing about 4-5 ounces of coolant mixture to seep into the crankcase. Needless to say, the bike is parked until I can get it to the dealer. It's still under warranty, and hopefully it will be repaired without a hassle. I have heard that water-pump seal failure is a known problem, but that's just from a friend who had to do the same on his DL1000.

Thanks for the input, guys!

in the spring when it was to cold too ride far .and many short trips . i got some milky oil . if your oil level has now become well over the sight glass you may have the pump leak . but i suspect its just normal condensation

I know people who would say that's a stupid suggestion, and insult whoever posted it to no end... I'll hold back however.

Most likely it's perfectly normal

Daffy if you don't know why bother to post? Did you bother to read his post about his water pump seals?

OK, forgive a stupid question. What is the engine oil reservoir? I had one on my old Triumphs, but did not know there was one on a V. Whadawe talkin about?
