Having looked at the VFR (5th generation), SV1000, Futura, FZ1, Monster, Multi-Strada, etc.. I nearly overlooked the V-Strom. I read several reviews I couldn't believe  they were talking about that ugly bike on the showroom floor. Besides that it's a Suzuki. Not exactly my favorite brand. People trading in VFR's  for one of these chubby bikes, c'mon. Seems like fate has steered me to this bike, because several times I was about to buy a used VFR, when both deals fell apart at the last minute. A bud told about this bike and after doing the research thing, here I am. Ready to take the plunge. But first, let me ask this forum one thing. Does thing really handle that well?

It's not necessarily a Suzuki...

I was surprised how well it handled. Yeah, it's a little top heavy, but you get used to that in no time. That skinny front tire and tubular handlebars make flicking it around VERY easy.
Yes, kawasaki & suzuki have some sort of deal going on with the bikes. It's my understanding that in this case kawasaki borrowed from suzuki but my sources could be wrong.
I've only had mine for about a week now and am still getting adjusted but I've been able to throw it around pretty well. No complaints with the handling. And if you're ever riding 2-up, then this bike is great for that as well.
Sold my 2001 VFR and got a new 2003 V Strom. The VFR does handle better, but not by much. V Strom feels as light and more manuverable than VFR but not quite a planted in turns. V Strom is much more comfortable. Engine wise you're trading VFR top end for V Strom torque. V Strom has less vibration also. V Strom feels much smaller and lighter than what it looks. Near sport bike handling with near touring bike comfort. Absolutely no regrets buying a V Strom.

I've read that replacing the stock handlebars (with motocross) will improve things immensely plus you'll have a place to hang accessories off of the cross bar.

Just wait until you put some Bridgestone BT020s on it. Just got back from a wet ride and the tires worked great.
