I just purchased a Stebel horn for my DL650. There are many threads here on installation which I have read. What I want to do is wire the horn in a very basic way, like just two wires from the battery ( the positive with an inline 20A fuse ) the negative directly to the battery ground terminal. I would put a heavy duty 30A ( on the positive wire ) push button switch on the handlebars. My question is....will this work? Is it practical? Do I still need the horn relay? I'm guessing that the relay is for protecting a delicate factory horn switch. I don't want to involve the factory horn circuit in any way. Thanks.

The horn will take about 13A. If the switch you select will handle that, you don't need a relay.
I'm sure how beefy the Strom horn switch is, I have heard on the Honda ST1300's that you would risk burning up the horn switch (COSTLY) without using a relay. Hence, I would and did, put a relay in.

Sure a horn relay is necessary if you use the stock horn button. ElBando has specifically stated he will not be using any of the stock horn wiring but will be putting a 30A button on the handlebar. That is plenty.

Greywolf, thanks for the info and you are correct, I do not want to disturb my OEM horn system. Since you say the horn will pull 13A maybe I won't put a 30A switch on my bars, maybe a 15A or 20A, whichever looks and fits good. And who knows, maybe I WILL put the relay on, it won't hurt, just take a few more splices.

I just tested this Stebel horn on my car battery. Man!!! It's loud ( in my garage anyway ). I think I'll treat this horn like a gun, only use it if my life is in danger.

It's loud in the garage but 20ft from a cager on a cell phone with the radio on and the windows rolled up it's inaudible. Don't be shy if you need to announce your presence.

Good point.

I love my Stebel horn!
:D:bom_devilish::bom_laugh3:
It brings a smile to my face just thinking about it. I have it wired into my stock switch with a relay. I have found that a quick tap on the horn button just gives a nice clear toot, but lay on it and you'll get everyone's attention.
