Well...I know, you should not run 26K before you check your DL650 valves for the very first time, but I thought I would let you know what I found when I finally got back from a two month trip to Alaska and all points between. I was going to get them checked before I left...just to be on the safe side, but when I got a look at the dim whit that would be turning the wrenches at the dealer, I said NFW.

During my 2 month trip, it seemed impossible to get anyone to accomodate me to get a valve check done....so I just said "screw it". Just getting new tires installed and an oil change was about as good as it was going to get on that trip. Honestly, I said to myself before I left....this bike will probably be trashed by the time I get done...so I was willing to "write it off" as a cost of the trip. Besides, the bike was running great...and I grew fearful of letting somebody mess it up while in no mans land.

Once safely back in SC, I finally decided to check the valves at 26K...and with lots of tips and help from this forum, I tackled the task myself. The tip about removing the front fairing as a single part (2 bolts) was invaluable. The tip about how to avoid the cam chain tensioner removal would have also been very helpful had I actually had to adjust the valves....but I did not.

Checked the valves and they were still in spec. albeit on the lower end of the spec. My exhaust valves were all at .008-.009, and my intake valves were at .004-.005. My plugs looked great...nice and tan. Since the valves are on the lower limit, I'll probably check them again in 10K. Doing the clearance check the second time will take me half the time as originally.

I ran synthetic oil after the first 600 miles and changed it about every 6,000-8000 miles while on the 2 month trip. I am amazed that my DL650 runs just as good as the day I left for Alaska.

I think along the lines as you.....although I doubt I'll even check my valves. My bike starts up right away, gets great gas mileage, and runs perfect.......I'm not worried about it. I "may" check them eventually, just depends on what mood I'm in. I currently have just shy 0f 20,000 and I'm not sure my bike could run any better. It is better safe than sorry.....so probably not a bad idea for most folks to check them.

If you have a 06 1K built in oct. 05 I would recommend checking the exhaust valves at 12 to 14,000. As BTD would say I'm just saying.

The engine is pretty bullet proof, a valve check is worth doing. One of the important things to do IMHO. I don't do it myself. It costs about $200 to get it done. I do everything else.

"dim whit that would be turning the wrenches at the dealer, I said NFW."

That is the very reason I will do all my own work. The most reputable dealer in my area has already upset me, convincing me that they were simply looking for a fleecing....so like I said....I will do all my own work.

My bike is at 13,800 miles. From the manual I understand a valve check is requested 14,500. Being that winter is upon us, the 14.5k maintenance will be completely done by myself in the safety of my garage....away from idiots and dealers with the motivation to charge me 3x what it should cost.

Great to know that the valves were in spec at 26k.....but I will check mine at 14k. If I were on the trip you were on....I would have done the same as you.

Flightline....with two posts....looks like you are new to the Forum. Welcome! You ought to write up your trip and post pics for the rest of us convicts to view and dream of doing the same one of these days!

If this does not work...just go to www.trentonflyers.com....then select the TF Alaska tab.

From your post I think it may be a little to late for that.:var_39:
