OK folks , there is a new game in town . The 1st Official game of " STROM CACHERS . You have all heard of Geocacheing ? Well , this game is very similar but sort of has a twist . Sort of a mix between Geocacheing and Travel Bugging .

A cache is in place and on the move as I post this thread . It is quite simple to play . It is a game that is USA/CANADA based and STROM specific . Lot's of clubs and orginizations out there so let's have our own game to boot .

How it works . There is a small blue waterproof Otter Box with a clear lid in play . Inside the the case are a few items that must remain in the box when it travels . They are to remain permenant . One is the TAG itself . It is 3/4" X 4 inches long brass TAG with a black nylon corded lanyard . Inscribed on the tag are these words .

STROM CACHERS TAG
IF FOUND 828-553-2442
11/22/2008 USA

Also in the box is a small note pad and a pen . Which of course can be replaced when need be . The intended use of the pad and pen should be obvious . Within the box is the true CACHE . How the cache comes into play is this . I started the Cache Box Tag in play today with the afore mentioned items , PLUS , I added a small token as a reward to the person now carrying the Cache . The holder of the Cache as of now is Ridge Runner . When Ridge Runner got the Cache Box Tag , he took the cache I placed in there , and before he places the Cache Box Tag next , he will then put a new Cache ( or small token ) in the Cache Box for the next rider/carrier to keep . This will allow riders to possess something of the rider who had the Cache Box Tag before him . If you have ever been invlolved in Geocacheing , you'll understand . Oh yeah folks , also post up what the Cache is that was placed in the Box for you to keep . We'd like to hear about those itmes too .

OK . There are two basic rules regarding acquiring and or placing the Cache Box which goes like this .

(1) THE PREFERED METHOD . As I did today , I put the Cache Box Tag into play , I rode for a while today , then physically handed it off to Ridge Runner in person . Ridge Runner obviously at that time became Cache Box TAG carrier and possessor .
Within the PREFERED METHOD , there are endless variables . What we hope for here is that riders will plan rides in another riders area , post it up , and hand pass the Cache Box Tag personally . Yep , creating a meet and greet situaiton .
When the Cache Box Tag is acquired by a rider , he needs to get GPS coordinates of where he got it , a photo of the Cache Box and his V-STROM and of course the rider in the photo . We want to meet and greet folks here , so give us all the scoop . If the Cache Box Tag is hand passed , a photo of both riders is best . We'd like to see the connection . Post up a trip report with details of trip , photos and anything else you Cache Box Tag . Or simply post up a planned trip in the forum here and see who all we can get lined up to pass it on to .

(2) The other , but less prefered method .... Pretty much Geocacheing is it . You'll need to hide it somewhere where the general public cannot easily find it . It will need to go somewhere where any style rider can go . Not everyone is Stromin' Nromin' and can take a Strom up the side of Mount Rushmore with lunch in his hand . You can do that along the way though of course . We want the Cache Box Tag to be easliy acquired by all who ride a STROM and want to play . Again , your bike needs to be in the photo and if all possible , we'd like to see a photo of you . NO FILE PHOTOS . The Cache Box and TAG needs to be in the photo as well . If you go scuba diving and want to pass it under water , fine , just also add a photo of your bike and or bikes at the docks or something .
If you stash the Cache Box Tag , we NEED specific info . None of this guessing game stuff on this one guys . Get exact directions to the site from major intersections within a zip code and town . Post a photo of the exact location . Pretty much spell it out .
The reason we want to eliminate the guessing game here is multifold . One , if you happen to be on your Strom in a mixed bike tour and realize you are going to go within a few miles of the Cache , we don't want you holding up your tour buds on their cruisers while digging around in the middle of the Dead Sea with a metal detector . Let's do all we can to dierct folks to it .
I suppose the biggest reason we want to spell out the Cache locations are so we can keep it moving as fast as we can , and as ' far ' as we can of course , so all can have a shot at it in time .

That's pretty much the rules and the objective all wrapped into one big roll . ONE BIG RULE THOUGH . Please don't acquire the Cache in January , knowing you have a trip planned in June and hold it in your sock drawer for six months so you can have the coolest locate of us all . Keep this thing moving . You may never know when it might come back around to you .
In fact , I think we should go ahead and impose a 72 hour hold on an acquired Cache Box Tag before you need to start moving it . If you have some amazing trip planned in 73 hours , let us all know and we can toss it up and see how everyone feels about you holding it past the 72 hours .
If you have the tag on a tour , you need to be set up to post your trip report at least every 48 hours but we prefer a daily report of the movement of the Cache Box Tag . Hec , if that seems to hard , just say so . It is all just to keep it moving .
Let's play , let's learn and let's meet and greet . Historical places , wonders of the world , natural environment ... etc... etc... etc.. is what and where we would like to see this Cache Box Tag go .

OK , one more small piece of business here before I do my post and report of the Cache Box Tag for today .

I figure we need a couple of guys to sort of moderate this a little but and help keep track of folks and things . I am looking to help with this for sure and have asked Ridge Runner to help me as well . So here in the USA it looks like the two of us .

Now , don't forget , this is a Canada and a USA based game , so we would like for our brothers from the North to pick amongst you which two guys can help this game when it comes to Canada . Just remember , we need DEDICATED STROMMERS to work on this thing . If you are planning on trading your Strom in for a Scooter in spring , you may not be the best pick .
You are Canadians . You are smart and you are tough , so pick us two meatheads so you are ready when time comes . And doesn't have to be just fellas , you ladies have plenty to offer as well .

This ought to be a good and really fun game , SO LET'S GO !!!!! , Wes..aka..PO-SLOKE

Today , I picked up the Tag itself from Spud and Deb's Hunting Dog Supply in Pisgah Forest NC, USA~ I told Spud what we were doing with the tag so he offered it up at no charge . I told him I would post his info in excahnge . Spud has an awesome Store for hunters . If you have hunting needs of any kind for you or your hunting dogz , he is THE MAN . He will ship anything you want that he has and he will make a good guy a good deal . The store number is 828-862-8725 . Mention you heard about him here and he will take care of you . He is a big old Hillbilly that loves people and loves dogz and hunters as well .

OK . I left Spud and Deb's , headed for the Henderson County North Carolina Toy Run that is organized by the Christian Motorcycle Assocation Chapter 520 out of Hendersonville Nc . I met up with the CMA Fast Lane Rep David Oates and we hashed out some good old stories regarding hopes for places the Cache Box Tag would and could go .
I had already planned to meet Rdige Runner at the toy run and pass the Cache Box Tag to him physically . I had never met Ridge Runner before today and it was a pleasure and an honor . I carried the Cache Box Tag from the starting point of the Toy Run at Fletcher Park in Fletcher North Carolina USA . ( N 35 25' 31.8 x W 82 30' 1.4 ) . The Tag rode with me on my bike throughout the Toy run . We terminated the Toy Run at the Hendrson County Courthouse where we all placed the toys on the Court House steps . ( N 35 18' 55.02 X W 82 27' 26.54 ) . I then physically passed the Cache Box Tag off to Ridge Runner . Obviously , he is now in possession of it and is the official carrier until he passes it on to the next STROMMER.

Here are some attached photos of the trip and effort . There will also be a photo of Spud holding the Tag up as I was getting ready to go . Good old Spud , you'd love that big ol' Hillbilly , I swear you would .
The photo of the two riders with the Stroms in the photo are Ridge Runner on the left , PO-SLOKE ( me ) on the right .

Don't forget guys , you gotta carry it on your Strom and it has to be in the Photo !!!!!

I am looking to take this thing south, that way we can ride where it is not 20 degrees. So if U are interested let me know I am looking for someone in the Greenville county or somewhere around there to hand off to let me know or I will cache it by Wed.

only 445 which is less than 1/2 of last year
over 6,000 in cash and then there were the toys. So, less than 1/2 the people, more than 1/2 the money and toys as last year. We were blessed to have such a great giving considering numbers, weather and economy.
Tee shirts are still for sale at Chrome and Stuff on 64 E R&P Cycles on 25 N, $15 for short sleeve and $20 for long sleeve or sweatshirt. ALL the money from the shirts goes to the kids. None for the store and printing costs are covered, so slide by and pick up a Christmas present for somebody.

Noone from SC wanna pick this thing up. I'll ride 2 hours out to Columbia, and that means we cover all the way to Charleston. Howabout a GA. boy someone from the deep south let me know something. Lets see if we can get this thing to travel across the country.

Hey cool! I just found out about geocashing this last week. Seems pretty cool. My son and I are trying it out this week. I'm in San Antonio, Texas and am willing to drive 2 hours in any direction (or more if there is a good ride) to get the box. Let me know.

p.s.
This forum is kind of hidden. I found it by accident...maybe wes hould promote on other forums. Just a thought.

PO-SLOKE, what part of the NC/SC state line do you occupy? I've been looking for an excuse to add SC to my little MC conquest map. Someplace like Franklin, NC or Greenville, SC would not be bad for me, but I can't get out there until Friday.

If there's someone in Athens (I KNOW there are DS/ADV riders in Athens and Gainesville!) or north GA or the Alabama state line wants a pickup, I can make it on Sunday afternoon.

Sorry. San Antonio's just a no.

Tomcat ,

You are right . This forum is in an odd place . I would have thought North America would be be the title forum , then all places within it . I had a hard time finding the correct forum though . I had rather it be here , than in a forum it shouldnt be in and get kicked . By the way , keep a close eye out for folks planning trips and where the Case is . That's a good way to intercept it and let folks know it is somewhere to maybe he had .

Snooze ,

I am in Sapphire,NC . not far from Franklin . This entire area has some of the best riding in the country so come on out . I do have the STROM CACHERS game posted and linked to this forum in other forums as well . You will find a link in ADV and other DS type forums . Let's just not forget the few standards that are set . STROMS are the essential bike ... etc... etc... etc...
It really only got launched Saturday eve , so the responses are pretty good already . I think we will see this thing go lot's of places . In part , allot fo the reason to initiate this type of game is to get folks looking at other folks planned trips and maybe do some contacting each other they wouldn't normally do . The passing it off to one another physically is most desried for that reason alone .

Good luck guys and have fun with it , Wes

p.s. Also , my sig line in ADV has the direct link to this thread in it as well . You can often find me in the NC Tag-O-Rama thread on ADV as well .

Ok folks . There was a question about the 72 hour guideline . As things stand , we have a guideline that says that once you acquire the Cache Box Tag , you have 72 hours to either hand it off and or geocache it .
This guideline was put in place to allow the Cache Box Tag to be moved along and not live in your sock draw for several days and or weeks waiting for us to earn gas money . Basically , that is the guidleline with exception .
The ammended version and exception is this . If you have acquired the Cache Box Tag , you have 72 hours ( roughly ) to get it on the move . If you are .... let's say ..... leaving from the Outer Banks of North Carolina headed for Mount Ranier Washington , the Cache Box Tag is technically " IN PLAY " and not stagnent for the entire tour .
Although , it might be tons of fun to post up your trip and maybe pass it off to someone along the way and see where it can and will go . The guidlines are not rock solid and without flexability . It is just that , guidlines to keep it moving . If it is in play all is well . Parked in the garage for eternity would like to be seen avoided . LOL . These are loose guidlines so play with them .

Also ...... Although we would like to see this STROM specific , here is an additional exception . If you are a registered StromTrooper and own a Strom you qualify . If you own a ....UH....UH..... Harley ( goodness forbid ) and your Strom is dead nookie from all the loving rides you put her through . Jump on the HD and move the Cache Box Tag with it . Appease us though by posting up a photo of your poor pitiful and broken Strom so we can feel sorry for you while you having to be seen on the HD . LOL

SAVVY ????????

I do believe you would be correcto mundo . But word has it that RR has a note from home excusing him from scrutiny . LOL . I think he is hoping to hand pass rather than Cache it . Lot's of folks are looking up for some rides this weekend . Maybe it'll go back " IN PLay " real soon . Holidays slow the world down huh ? I am even guessing the box of hundred dollar bills Santa is suppose to send me for Christmas is going to be late . LOL

Somebody chime in here and hook up with RR and get this puppy on the move . Happy T-Day if I forget to say it again .

I misread the thread earlier and asked PO-SLOKE when I could meet him for a hand-off, when Ridgerunner had it all along. Nice! I have clearly begun making holiday whoopee a capella. :var_17:

I'll see Ridgerunner on Saturday, up north of Greenville, SC. Planning to meander through Franklin, NC, maybe stay the night, and work my way through Clayton, GA and the 'hoochee Nat'l Forest back to Atlanta. I can stash this up in the woods, but there are at least a half-dozen other troopers between Marietta and Athens. Little BBQ, maybe a little ride....

RR is back home safe , so let's here from you Snooze . Post up your trip report and chime on in so we know you made it Bro . Pass that puppy on to some of those good old Ga boys . Hec , for that matter , recruit one of those sweet little Georgia Peached to haul it around for a while . LOL

Welllllll, my weekend in NC got rained out. I got to watch my Tigers and the Hogs trade a couple scores over lunch, then rush home in time to see the Tigers give up a last-minute touchdown. The game in my head along the road was WAY more interesting!

Would you believe that, on the day after Thanksgiving, traffic on the interstate was blowing along between 80 and 90 mph from Greenville to Atlanta?! There were LEOs, of course, but the five or six victims I saw didn't hold up the rest of us at all. The rain started not 25min from home, but I had the good luck to get off the road and suit up before it got miserable. The Wee got an even 50mpg, going 85mph with hard bags on.

I didn't get any decent pics taken except one of the fine eatery that hosted our gathering and one of Ridgerunner. Ridge's a great guy, and he made use of at least three different terrains getting from the street to the parking slot next to me! [ Studtrooper. :mod2_scooter: ] Really glad to put a face and a handshake to a name. Apparently there's quite a little corps of Troopers in NC. NC's a good 2-3hrs for me, regardless of my route, but I'll have to get up there soon to meet some of you guys anyway. That's all you guys need, an Atlanta rider finding a NC tag!

Oh, apparently, I'm not tall enough to suffer a buffeting problem or heavy enough to hate the stock seat. whatever! I didn't touch the ground until I put hard cases on, so I'm just grateful to be upright at the end of the day.

http://www.stromtrooper.com/picture.php?albumid=29&pictureid=106

I would NEVER have expected so many scooters in Travelers Rest, SC! Unbelievable. I've been at LSU, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech; I passed more scooters on the street in Travelers Rest. I feel a little bad for all the "200-mile" sympathy. It really only came out to about 160. I don't think I'm ready to ride this up to Washington state, yet.

Oh, Predators 4-3 in OT on a goal by Ryan Suter. Whale of a game. Lots of Nashville jerseys for an Atlanta home game.

[EDIT]

Snooze ,

I got your pm . I say we look at it this way . The biggest reason we went with the Geocache/Travle bug thing is so in the event folks wanted to pass it off but weren't gonna be in the same area at the same time , they could cache it with a plan in mind until the new carrier could put it in play .
Now , considering the fact that the riding season if pretty much over for SANE people , let jsut get you to hang on to it . BUT .... let's still keep it in play while you have it . In other words , if you take it for a day or weekend ride , or even if you get so bored you ride to Wally World to pick the wife up a box of Bon Bons , let's see a ride report .
In fact , take it to Granny's for Christmas let us all meet the Kin Folk . Ifin I were you , I'd use it for a Christmas Tree ornament anytime you are not riding with it . Even if you don't ride the Strom to Granny's wear it on yer neck and let us see all the good food with the fam . Please , NO shower photos though . LOL .
If you get the jest of it , just be creative and have some fun keeping us posted with words and pics . If you run into a fellow Trooper wanting the Cache/Tag , just hook him up and post up . If you are in Flipadelhia Fla and have it with you and run into a Trooper there and didn't ride the Strom to Granny's , I guess you could ride two up for a bit and then pass it off .
A couple of things though . Just let's make sure we get photos of a Strom in the passing , and don't forget the box , the lil log book and a trinket for whoever you pass it on to . Again , geocaching is a last resort and pretty much prefered if we know another Trooper is in pursuit of it . The idea is to keep us posted on the holders status in general until it gets passed . No electric chair here for doing things a bit diff . Just be creative and have fun . Oh yeah , if you pass it on to another Strommer , let's be sure he is logged on as a member on THIS FORUM . This is view 1300 and noone wants to meet up with snooze and take the cache somewhere. Heck I thought it would be cool to see if we could get this thing out to the left coast. What gives noone ride during the winter or what?

If you can get it to northern Idaho or western Montana I'll get it the rest of the way to the Pacific and maybe even down to the plethora of strommers in Oregon.

I've been looking for a good reason to get more miles under me. If I tell the wife I am riding 600 miles to pick something up from a fellow rider it makes more sense to her than when I blindly point at a map and say I'll be back in a few hours (or before dinner).

An avid Utah Stromtrooper, 2mstone, is headed on a midwinter adventure from Utah to Alabama this weekend. Here's his post showing his planned route:

http://www.stromtrooper.com/showthread.php?p=337822#post337822

I'd love to see him get it and bring it back to the Rockies. Even though it's winter, I'm pretty confident it could get to the West Coast fairly quickly if 2mstone got a hold of it. He could also pass it along to some of you along his route. I'll point him to this thread.

BTW, I just barely found this thread. Great idea! I think it should be a sticky on the General Discussion page for better visibility. Even though it's a US/Canada thing, I think there would be general interest in following the travels and pics.

Good suggestion Satch, thanks for the link!

Sooooo...... who has it now? I'll be in Dothan, Alabama over Christmas. I can meet anywhere within a few hours ride from there, but not much farther than that as my daughter has a lot of plans for me while I'm there.

Also....if this works out, if you are along my route back might want to give me a heads up so I can hand off the goods. If I understand the rules correctly, I should pass it off before I get to Southern Utah as I will be trailering my bike home from there.

Yeah , we sort of wavied some of that Banjo simply due to the Holiday season and the really cold weather . Maybe if it gets out of Atlanta some time soon we can see it move along some .

Snooze has been campaigning pretty hard to get toms folks in the vicinity to come and meet up with him , but seems folks are pinned down by the holidays .

I am gonna put in my sig line who has it and where it is . Maybe we could ask the folks who have it in play to do the same to prevent folks from wondering where it is all the time . Having it in the first post would make things confusing for those who log on for the first time via the thread getting bumped and clicking on most recent post .

Something like this sig line .

How long will you be in Dothan, just the 25th or a couple days extra? I'd love to see this make it as far as the Rockies!

Since a couple people asked, yeah, I've had it a while now. Nobody in north Georgia spoke up, and I'd hate to hide it under some rock before people are actually looking for it. I let PO-Sloke and RidgeRunner know, and they agreed. Nothing says "fun" like a little box full of mud in the middle of nowhere.

2mstone will be picking up the tag/cache/box and the plan is to pass it off to me in Northern Utah or another Stromtrooper in Southern Utah in the event there's too much snow in Northern Utah. But if somebody along 2mstone's route really wants it bad and can keep it moving, I'm all for that too. http://www.stromtrooper.com/picture.php?albumid=29&pictureid=189

There was a grey and misty sky this morning as I sought fuel and supplies for the road ahead. LEOs behind me, the hypnotic straight lines of the flatland over the horizon. Leaving the northern hill country for the southern plains brought a sense of exposure and vulnerability only barely masked by the dusky mist. Sunrise, if it came at all this coal-grey day, would relieve me of even that.

http://www.stromtrooper.com/picture.php?albumid=29&pictureid=191

I found shelter among strangers along the way. Their tongue was different but recognizable in some distant sense. Little things like the twang of "y'all" that should embrace the heart rather fell upon my ears like a handshake. Nonetheless, a greeting. Even their companion animals had foreign customs, apparently roaming free without a front porch to be seen. I kept my armor close.

http://www.stromtrooper.com/picture.php?albumid=29&pictureid=190

Mile after mile, the morning fog became mist, became a constant spray, became a companion closer than my own cloak. Having already accepted the torrent that seemed to spring up from the road itself as a part of me, I trudged onward with a clinging grip on the heated handgrips. There was at least some comfort to be found in warm hands and a dry face. Then, out of the clouds, a shape in the sky formed itself into a beacon of hope. To be warm, to be fed, to be home.

http://www.stromtrooper.com/picture.php?albumid=29&pictureid=192

The people there did not greet me with a softened twang of tongue or a friendly "y'all", but with open smiles and warm hearts. I was alone but among kin, sharing biscuits and hot coffee as if we had done so all our lives.

http://www.stromtrooper.com/picture.php?albumid=29&pictureid=193

My burden lifted, one braver and stronger than I can cross the western vastlands to the fabled snowy peaks of Oot'aah. Godspeed, Tombstone. Godspeed.

The Cache is in West Valley City, Utah. If Satch's wife comes up with bail money I'll pass it on to him asap.

Now for "true confessions";
Due to the snowy winter we are having, my plan for this trip was to trailer the bike to Southern Utah, and upon my return trailer it back from Southern Utah to my home.

After the Cache thing came up I really didn't want to have the trailer be a part of my return trip however; at around 11:30 this morning I called my wife from Mesquite Nevada. She warned me there was a nasty storm forecasted, calling for snow at 2:00 pm. I don't have a GPS so I wasn't comfortable or able to cache the box especially in an area I'm not familiar with. In the end, my wife met me in Beaver Utah where we loaded the bike on the trailer and drove the 200 miles home. It was the right decision as the roads were white, slushy, and slick from Payson to our home. I had to 4wd to get into our circle. Safety is paramount and is what my choice was based on.

If anyone is unhappy the Cache spent some time on a trailer, I'll take it back to Georgia next summer so it can start over.....

Good deal Bro . Glad you made it home safe and with NO incedents of tragedy . Utah is one beautiful place for sure . I'd like to someday get back out that way myself for a tour of that part of the country .
Can't imagine you NOT calling for a trailer in those conditions for sure . The good news is that if you ever go HD on us , you already know how to load a steed on a trailer for a trip to Daytona . LOL
Your the MAN getting it so far cross country . When and if you have time and if you took some pix , we'd all love to see a really good report . Nice job, 2mstone! And a smart move to trailer the last bit. Caching it at the bottom of a ravine or handing it off in the ER is more adventure than any of us would like to see for this, so you did the right thing!

A stellar ride report without question . I am sure the things that passed through your mind on such a trip , is all to much to portray in a setting such as the forums . Stuff like this is what gains my personal admiration and utmost respect for the true spirit of adventure .

FYI - Lots of snow here in Northern Utah. I have to be very careful when walking to get the mail because of solid ice on the road. Just telling you this so you will understand why the Cache has not moved....we're snowed in! :(

No wories man . That thing went through one hec of a trip , you might wanna let it get it's wind . LOL . Winter is for sure a hold up for our riding here as well . Although it just seems to never stop raining . I can only pray it doesn't turn to snow here . We just never get over the ice when it does . LOL

I have another Tag I have tried to kick off as well , but the winter weather just want seem to let up so it can up and fly . I need to edit and figure on something diff for the alledged 72 hour thing . The travelling Tag requires allot of planning so it seems to not make sense for that short of a time limit , or a time limit at all for that matter .

Again , 2matone . An inspiring and daring journey you made to visit your daughter . I am wondering if the fam might be thinking you are wired a little backwards . Or are they just accustomed to you being sdventurous ? LOL .

For those that have not read your trip report , they need to . Next time you are out this way , post up and maybe we can get some bikes together and escort you through . You never know , we've been know to heat up a can of beans and even share with weary travellers .

Hey Wes,
The Cache finally got it's wind and has been handed off! We had a break in the snow so four of us; Satch, ScottG, Cavehamster, and I met at a local landmark to do the deed.

Satch now has the Cache and his plans are....well, I'll let him announce that.

As for the 72 hour limit, I think you should let it stand. You made it clear that it is just a suggestion and having a "suggested limit" helps folks to move it along.

And yes, my family thinks I'm nuts.

The Strom Cache is a great idea and fun to do, I hope many other Strommers get involved with it. As for a can of beans and an escort...plan on it next summer! :D I'm looking forward to meeting you!

The Cache has been handed off from 2mstone to Satch.

We have had lots of snow in Northern Utah in the past week and riding has been impossible. But today a warm south wind has been melting some of the snow and drying out the roads. For a few precious hours the roads were clear of snow and relatively dry. We knew we had a narrow window of opportunity to meet for the hand off before the next snowstorm hits tonight.

We planned a meeting for 5:30 this evening at the shores of the Great Salt Lake at an old resort called "Saltair". It is a bit of a landmark with a storied history. The area is famous for its magnificent sunsets and of course the Great Salt Lake. Back in the day, tourist would gather here to swim in the lake which is so salty you can float effortlessly on it.

The short break in the weather beckoned some other area Stromtroopers to join in. We notified Cavehamster and ScottG of our meeting and they couldn't resist an evening ride to the Great Salt Lake in the middle of winter!

The four of us met up, shared some lukewarm "hot" chocolate, and talked about upcoming rides. We're all getting excited for real riding season--and making plans to ride to the V-Strom gathering in South Dakota.

After some discussion about how to handle the next hand off, the 4 of us rode off together and got lots of looks from cagers who don't normally see 4 motorcycle riders in the middle of Winter at night by the Great Salt Lake!

It was tough to get a good picture. It was actually a lot darker than it looks. I'm amazed at how these little digital cameras can pick up the light. Satch - Left, 2mstone - Right. In the background is the old Saltair Resort and the Great Salt Lake. You can't really see the lake due to the snow, clouds and reflected white light.

I had a great time tonight riding out to the hand off between 2mstone and Satch. It felt weird riding in January. Satch, thanks for the luke warm hot coco. Can't wait to get my hands on that cache(weather permitting).

It was good to see you Cavehamster, and what can I say about the cross country rider 2mstone who brought the cache all the way to Utah from Georgia, he's got balls.

If any of you Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Arizona, or Colorado Stromtroopers want to get involved with the cache SPEAK UP!

Hey guys ,

I have to apologize for not being in here muc lately to pass on my congrats and appreciation of the StromTrooper sorts keeping this Tag moving . I have been somewhat absorbed in some personal stuff and won't bore you with the details .

I would like to say that it is a great reward to see riders meeting riders and making an effort to let each other know we are here and are in support of the sport and each others endeavors . I am sure Troopers are finding great reward in meeting new riders face to face and spending some time spreading some good old fashined Rider Lore .

The photos are awesome and you guys out in that part of the country are made of some of the touhgest stuff on earth . I think probably about the only thing that could stop any of you would be an expired and or evoked kitchen pass . So keep those kitchen passes up to day and let's have some fun .

(Sorry, no movie star pics) The others made a 160 mile ride into the Western Desert of Utah. Maybe somebody in that group can post some pics.

Well, thanks to Satch for posting the handoff report. I got busy with a few things after the handoff and this is the first time I have had to get on the computer to post my version. It looks like Satchs' pictures turned out much better than mine, so I'm glad he posted them.

The GPS coordinates at the exchange site are: N 40.75876 W 111.84798

I can say that since I have been riding my Strom and meeting up with fellow Troopers in the Salt Lake area, this is the largest stable of Stroms assembled yet(besides the 2008 V-Strom Gathering in Cedar City). I was able to meet 5 riders I haven't met before. It was great to have all you there and to share stories and techinical success.

Hey Folks ,

Glad all are having fun that seems to be being motivated by a silly little box . What a great game you are all making it . I am a bit curious how the Cache part of the game is going . In other words , as the game was initially proposed , each rider would leave a small token in the box for the next rider to acquire and keep as his own for a memrobalia piece . I haven't seen much mentioning of that and was just curious if we were doing that .

It's really all simply suggestive so if not , no big deal , just seemed like a fun addition to it all . Also , " CCR " , another Trooper pm'd me and has posted the game on his blog . Here is the link >>> http://www.vee-strom.com/blog/rides-and-reviews/v-strom-motorcycle-geocaching/ . I only had a minute to browse the blog , but it looks like a nice blog and taking a look at his post would generate some hits on his site .

There has been lot's of interest for the new game from the left coast guys and the upper central US as well . We just need to get the weather cleared and the ball rolling . Hopefully we can collectively raise a few bucks for some under priviledged kid in some unkown part of the US .

Any possible takers for the Kidz Cache in the WNC area ? I think that if the game gets a good kick off , we'll stay with the paypal system to donate . It's just a whole lot easier for the handling of the funds we might raise . I really think once this game gets rolling it will really draw some good attention .

Thanks guys , Wes

Yes, small tokens have been passed and the hand-offs are being documented in the book. I had to put some tape on one page however since it was about to tear out.

A thought occurred to me that it would have been cool to have a bunch of small stickers made up that stayed with the box so that each person who took part could take a sticker.

PO-SLOKE
01-20-2009, 06:12 PM
Satch ,

The thought of stickers to signify participation in the game occured to me also at one point . But the best I could come with was about 3-5 bux a sticker . I guess that sounds a bit cheap of me , but being a sole proprietor of an extremely small business , coupled with the fall off of about 60% + of business this last year alone . I sort of opted out on that idea . Sorry to be so cheap guys .

Maybe Ridge Runner could at the very least come up with something . He is the Trooper here in Western NC that has the Strom Gear lineup available for us . Maybe at the very least he could drum up something that maybe each carrier of the tag could opt to purchase . Best I can do guys , sorry again for being so cheap . But I will at least offer my appreciation to you all for playing the game . I really think it is a great game for middle aged crisis therapy . LOL

The design isn't on paer yet due to the fuses I keep blowing in the drawing board of my mind . I suppose it will just be one of the those , seat of the pants designs in the end . Hey fellow Troopers,

It looks like I'll be making the trip to St. George, Utah this weekend. So if anyone will be in the area and is interested in a handoff let me know. This is my plan:

Friday Feb. 6th 2pm-7pm. Ride from West Jordan, Utah to St. George, Utah

Saturday Feb. 7th I'll be around St. George area catching some college softball games(my buddies daughter plays for CSI). I could meet someone within an hour or so of St. George for a handoff.

Sunday Feb. 8th Ride home to West Jordan sometime mid-day.

If you are interested in the cache PM me and I'll give you my cell number so we can make a plan.

It would be nice to get the Cache moving again.

Gotta say Scott is a nice guy and too bad we live far enough apart we cannot ride together, I will have to head north more often.
Now to locate some people in Cali.
I'm going to see if anyone here in Southern Nevada wants to get involved and pass around til I locate someone in Cali that has a day that meets my schedule.
I got home and made up some stickers to throw in the box for future cacher's
Hope you guys like, its made out of white reflective vinyl.

I love it when a plan comes together! It's good to see the cache out of the snow zone. It should move a lot quicker now. I'll be interested to see what happens once it hits California. Nice job guys! Oh yeah, and nice sticker too Mike. Gotta get me one of those!

Vegas and Scott ,

You guys ROCK . Weather dim and all , you guys made it happen . I just got in from church and gotta get ready for work tomorrow so I will post more on the morrow .

Vegas . I'd for sure like a couple of decals . Those look awesome . Might get more folks involved with something like that as well . I mean , take a look at professional rodeo cowboys and what they deal with just for a snow board sized belt buckle . LOL . Me ? I'd rather have a sticker . Then again , My Strom isn't quite so likely to kick my brains out and mix them with the dust as a bull is huh ? LOL . I'll pm address info sometime in the next day or so .

Keep on keepin' on fellas . The game seems to being accomplishing exactly what I hoped it would when I kicked it off . Life long memories and palz .

Well, the ride home from the handoff on Sunday was nasty. I knew it would be wet but I didn't think I would be riding in it the entire way home(5 1/2 hours). I started off leaving the motel in St. George in the rain, as I got closer to Cedar City(2008 V-Strom Gathering location)and gained elevation it began to snow. By the time I got to Cedar my boots were filled with water and I knew it was going to be a cold ride home. When your feet are cold the rest of the body is cold. From Cedar the rest of the way home it either rained or snowed or both at the same time. Luckily the tempuratures were warm enough to keep the snow from sticking to the road. Otherwise, I would have had to stop riding. I can's say enough about my TourMaster Transition2 riding jacket and Fieldsheer Mercury pants. Both have insulated liners and are waterproof. I never got wet where protected by this gear and stayed warm dispite my feet being wet and cold. I only wore longjohns and a long sleeve shirt under my gear. I stopped 3 times to warm up my feet alittle and get some lunch. Here are a few pictures of the ride home courtesy of my family who drove the car home from St. George.

If one of the guys from SoCal takes it home, and they can then get it to a NoCal trooper, Ill be glad to pick it up during my SaddleSore 1000 this spring or summer.

There are quite a few guys up here around Seattle and eastern Washington that would probably like to get in on this.

Dont have the time to run that far right now.
Want to keep it about 500 miles round trip.
Depending on location would do an overnighter.
Mainly looking LA area, Palm Springs San Diego, or Bakersfield

Hey HW,

That would be a good ride and a fun event. I hoped to be in San Diego this coming week but the weather looks worse than I like to ride in. The highways don't bother me though the mountain passes with snow and ice do.

Keep me in mind and maybe the road conditions are better between SD and LV than they are here. This would be a good 'get acquainted' ride for me and the DL1000. 340 miles from SD to LV. Easily doable.

Keep me in mind.

Rain here for the last couple of days but I am gonna cage it down to the bowling alley tonight for sure for some fun with some riders .

Job's done. I have it! I met with Mike (Vegashotwheeler) and his friends Jim and Jerry at the In n Out in Rancho Cucamonga today. We all got there together at 11 am sharp. Ran into each other on I 15 off ramp and got off the bikes at the same time.
Thanks guys for coming all the way from Vegas. They started off at 7 am this morning and looked as fresh as San Valentine roses:-)
Was not a long ride for me coming from Glendora but I promise to carry the flame farther away from L.A next time. Will post some time next month to see who is out there willing to receive the trophee.
Thanks for the drink, great V strom stickers (more in the box for next cacher), the hotwheel chopper and Vegas Casino jeton:-)
We had a good time around burgers and drinks and we will try to meet again in Death valley this spring or on ACH.

3 of us rode Swany300(Jerry), Jim and myself to Rancho Cucamonga California yesterday to handoff the Vstrom Cache.
We left Vegas at 7:00am, and because of the short fuel range of the Suzuki Boulevard 130 miles, we did 2 fuel stops on the way Primm and Barstow.
Arrived in Rancho Cucamonga at 11:00am, getting off the 15 right behind ronnie (Bruno) who we were meeting.

We hit a couple of pockets of nasty wind at Baker and Glen Helen, but got through it riding down the road leaning like you are cornering.
Talk about pucker factor!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a great ride 517 miles total doorstep to doorstep
If it ever gets close to Vegas again and needs to be picked up I'll take it again.

OK Guys ,
I suppose I owe a grand apology for not being in here and helping out with the logistics and cheering on of the Cache . Things got really weird for me for the last several months and seem to possibly be ironing out a bit .
I started this Cache/Tag thing with the full intention of keeping it all updated and all that good hoopla . I again , aplogize for being a slacker . All of you have been stellar Troopers trying to keep the game alive . Actually , I feel like there are tons of interested people but winter months and the low value of a dollar has been strict on most of us . To those if you that have not suffered the financial crunch my hat is off to you . To you that have suffered it and are still amongst the head barely above water oxygen users , you have my enduring amdiration .
The interest in this game is well above and beyond what I ever expected , even with a few slow downs here and there . Maybe with spring approaching rapidly , we will acrue more lurkers which in hope will birth more Strommers to get involved .
It appears that Ronnie has the Cache in Los Angeles . How awesome is that . It made it from coast to coast in less then a year . Let's all give ourselves and our fellow riders who kept it moving , best that could , a BIG OL' HONKIN KUDOS .
I got my stickers for the game today that Vegashotwheeler sent me . They are perfect and my hat is off to him and his efforts . I have not checked in to see if adv_family has kept the Google map updated or not . Hopefully he has and if not , maybe we could all pull together to get him back involved . There are allot fo creative things this bunch could drum up so let's all pull together for the sake of riding and reder fellowship . A guy just can't make enough friends as it is , much less riders friends .

Thanks tons for the brotherhood , Wes

Welcome back PO-SLOKE;-) Yep, I feel the crunch but who does not these days...But hey not dead yet, so let's get this cache moving. After checking in with wife and family obligations I am probably not going to be able to go away for more than a short week-end this month. My best bet would be to bring it up North somewhere along the coast. if anyone is interested, let me know:-)
Cheers you all!

PS. Roll call...sorry but I am not familiar with these words in this context. Can u explain? Thxs

Hi PO-SLOKE!!

I'm still here, and the map is updated! Here's a current URL for the latest version of the map:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&t=p&msa=0&msid=118183908482981561298.00045efa9f0d1be98897e&ll=34.270836,-99.667969&spn=42.507524,93.164063&z=4

I'm slowly cookin' up plans to ride out to the Four Corners area this summer with my cousin and fellow Strommer, perhaps in June. I'd love to be able to pick up the cache if it's anywhere near our route, but chances are it won't be. As soon as I get more definite permissions here, I was planning to post a note about my ride and see if anyone had suggestions for places to visit on the way out, or in the Four Corners area. Or if there was anyone that wanted to meet up and ride for a while. But I'll go ahead and post the idea here and maybe the thoughts of an adventurous ride might stir others to action. Or if nothing else, I might get another thread going about riding across the country.

Thanks!

Don

There are some Strommers up here in Washington that would be able to pass it around.

Two of us are willing to do a Seattle to Oregon leg if need be. Hell, I'll go to NorCal if I can arrange it to coincide with my SS1000 run this summer.

Hi again, yes I am buying a Strom and have made a deal last night, just need to do the paperwork and financials.

I hope to be on the road in the morning and I will be taking some back roads to Utah, staying out of the traffic as much as possible. I am in Fontana at the moment, so if it is any help, I can probably do a bit of it.

Well, if it is any help, I will be coming back down that way over the next week or so. I want to do some of the parks in CA plus death valley before it gets too hot. Now the bike is sorted I am about to be cruising, so keep me posted and maybe I can ride down that way?

I may have to drop into Newport Beach, and even Fontana again, so the chances are I am in the area.

I am also more confident with the traffic and road rules, so that is a bonus. I also have a cell phone, so contact is easier than it was a few weeks back :)

Hi there!

Looks like you have been on a touring spree. Great shots on your blog by the way. Impressive! If you want to visit some parks in CA I'd suggest the Anza Borrego State park, the biggest one in Socal. I recently got a good feel for it during a one day ride a couple of weeks ago. We could meet somewhere around there and I'd be happy to ride through it again and hopefully do some of those trails with you.
So let me know when you are around and I'll handoff the cache to you:-)

That should work. Let me know as you move closer. As for your tire call 1 877 484 4860, a company called Parts411 at http://www.parts411.com/acbasp/stores/1/index.aspx
Order with them or see what they have available. They have good prices and they'll service you on the spot in San Dimas, off the 210. No wait, good service because they mostly sell online and ship, so they are never too busy. That's where I always go.

P.

Well, you caught me out there didn't you, OK let me explain.

I am not really using a schedule, except one I make up as I go, which hopefully fits in with things I want to see etc. So, as I would like to be in Florida, some time by the end of this month, I need to have some sort of shedule, however flexible it turns out to be. So, I initially figured where I would be in relation to Roswell. I had some items mailed to me from the states and from home, I expected them to be here before Wednesday, so I could pick them up and see the UFO place then plan another sort of destination for next week.

So, two reasons for being here, I am still waiting on one peice of mail, which may now have to be redirected a few weeks up trail, so that wil be another sort of schedule.

I hope that clarifies things for you :)

Hey TS, looks like you're having a great time working your way across the southern side of our country! You've hit a couple of spots (like Talimena) that I'm hoping to visit when I ride west in July.

There should be some Stromtroopers here on the east coast willing to meet up with you and take the Stromtrooper cache for a spin. If not, there should certainly be some in Rapid City!

Do you know what direction you're heading in after the dragon? I'm in the Raleigh, NC area and would be interested in catching up with you if you're heading east of the mountains at all.
