Hello All,

I own a 2002 DL1000. I don't know if the clutch basket has been replaced. So, my question is, how can I tell if it is worn out? While installed on the bike there is about 1/16 of an inch of play side to side. Does this mean the springs are worn??

hmmmm...are you referring to 1/16th inch play on the shaft? I'm not sure of the specs for this, and haven't had my 'strom's clutch apart yet, but I don't think there's supposed to be much play on the shaft.

Usually you'll need to replace the clutch basket when the side tangs are worn in a ripple fashion from engaging the fiber plates. Sometimes you can file these down to make a smoother engagement, but eventually may need to be replaced. that's been the main reason to replace the basket for most bikes. If you had the clutch out, were you able to confirm that any washers, ect got back in the proper sequence?

you check the springs by measuring the free length against spec.
