Thinking of maybe hooking up with some bike-to-bike communicators. I use a modular helmet, as does most of my riding buddies.
Just looking for some input on brands, models, etc from anyone in the group with units.

cheers

Well, it'll all depend on who you are riding with. If your buddies use CBs, then getting an FRS setup would not make sense.

Me and my buddies tried different setups like ChatterBox FRS/GFRS and CBs. We found that the best way to communicate for us was a CB. J&M Corp makes a great handlebar mounted CB for about $400 + you will need J&M headset for another $150 or so. The nice thing about J&M CB is it also comes with a separate aux input so you can listen to music like an MP3 player. Whenever you key the mike or someone speaks on CB, the music will mute. Two of my friends have the J&M setup and LOVE it.

Another suggestion is to get something like AutoCom that will act as an interface between rider and multiple audio devices. This will allow you to swap between FRS, CB, Cell Phone and whatever else you want.

There are also other, cheaper, ways to go. All depends what you want ant willing to spend for it.

Actually, I have found a very nifty unit. Made in Canada and only an hour away from me.
check it out at

Some folks I ride with use Collett and are very happy with them.

I did some quick tests with my new Autocom stuff by spreading it all out on the bed & adding batteries. The FRS radios work fine at 6-7 feet...

I hooked up the Kenwood radio, a mini-MP3 player, and my cell phone to the system & got it to work. To get the cell phone to answer (Nokia 3120), you have to change the settings to headset auto-answer. Other than that, everything is operational, including the rider/passenger circuit.

Now I need to get one installed on a bike and road test them...
The other one can be bike mounted or stand-alone.
