I was washing and waxing the Vee when the kick stand sunk into the lawn and the bike laid over on the left side. No damage, just grass stuck in the protrudences. A half hour later, it won't start. When I turn on the ignition switch and try to shift into neutral, "N" will not display on the panel. The tac and RPM gauges rotate to the right and return as they usually do when you start it, and the red light displays but it won't start. The word CHECK displays and the temp gauge hash marks are all black. The owner's manual is next to useless. The kickstand switch seems to be OK beacuse when I push it in the fuel pump starts. Any suggestions?
Thanks a heap!

Check the engine kill switch on the right handlebar. The kickstand switch would be suspect if the CHEC notice was still on in neutral.

The clutch switch connection being out will not trigger a CHEC signal though.

thats what I was thinking also but since it isn't displaying the neutral light maybe its just stuck one of those "false neutrals"......
Try rolling the bike a bit and see if the Green neutral light displays.

If you are not in Neutral, you will get the "Chec" indication if the side stand is down. You should be able to start by raising the sidestand and holding the clutch in. As you mentioned, if the fuel pump starts, the sidestand switch, and kill switch are OK. You likely damaged the wiring to the neutral switch or something lnked to the switch?

I just went out and tried it again, it now displays the N for neutral. It still won't start but I suspect the electronics got "wet" when I washed it. I will save my further comment for tomorrow.

I've noticed oft reported problems after washing the bike. It sounds like a bad idea.

A couple of members suggested the clutch switch. When I went back out this morning, I found that in the fall, the handguard had forced the clutch switch connector to become disconnected. Back up and ready to ride to work tomorrow.
Thanks!

That won't trigger a CHEC though. Did it just do that initially? Tipping over will trigger the tip over switch which will result in a CHEC. Turning the ignition off, then on again while upright will reset that. Having the bike in gear with the sidestand down will also trigger a CHEC. A clutch switch disconnection will not signal any problem. The bike just won't crank. It sounds like the bike was knocked into gear when it tipped and you found neutral later. Only after that was the clutch switch disconnection found.

I will make sure that I do not wash it to that extent again. Usually it's just to get the highway bugs off the front. No bugs today, too cold for them.
Again, thanks to all,
Steve
