Just keep receipts showing you bought the necessary items.

As well as keeping receipts for materials, keep a maintenance log including mileage, dates, and type of service.

4k service is a minor service interval, clean & lube linkage, lever pivots, inspect & adjust if necessary throttle/clutch cables, clean & lube caliper pins, clean & chain adjust, check for loose fasteners , change oil, expect about an hour of labor, + chemicals usually runs $90-$130 depending on your local labor rate and choice of oil

I also get reimbursed for most of my milage or get to deduct is as an expense on my taxes ;)

just got back from dropping my bike off for 30k service, on valve inspection intervals I always drop it off the nite before so they have a cold engine. I don't know if valves are out but I know is sure needs TBS, the past couple weeks it's been running like ass

$305 yesterday 6000 km service.
80 bucks for air filter alone...ouch!
When the warranty is up...I will be doing my own service.

air filter is not one of the 4k miles/6km service items, it's an every other 7.5k mi/12km service item

Whens the last time you checked the torque on your engine mounts. I have never seen a service interval for this. One of mine sheared off while going down the road, a mechanic wouldn't have checked that.

I catch the loose stuff when I wash the bike. Any bolt that is removed is loc-tighted when reinstalled.

What I was trying to get at is a 4000 mile Strom has so little wear on it that you might as well just keep riding. These things just keep going ang going like the energizer bunny.

Did the service myself. Changed oil, cleaned the chain with Kerosene, lubed it. Checked nuts and bolts etc for tightness. All fine. I kept a log of it. Cost me 35 bucks and time. The bike runs like normal. Put another 300+ miles on the next day!

According to my service manual, the air cleaner replacement isn't until 11k miles. Mine was still fine at that point.

I actually like changing my oil. Randyo must live next to a dealer, because for me, the drive to and from a dealer, and arranging for a ride, is more of a hassle and takes more time than the 1/2 hr to change oil and do chain cleaning, bolt checking and lubing of stuff.

But the decision of doing ones own maintenance or taking it in, is like talking about oil, or frankly, anything else about motorcycle ownership, Your milage may vary.

I sure hope that they installed the filter gasket, I'm doubtful since the filter wasn't even due to be checked/changed. Don't wait until your warranty is up "no good reason", start doing your maint now.

Giving the dealer $200 to let them have some minimum wage dope smoking grease monkey f- up your bike is retarded. Face it, they wont have their master mechanic doing this grunt work.

Changing the oil is easy, tightening the chain is easy, inspecting and tightening bolts to spec again easy. Most importantly, its your bike so you care about it and taking care of it and doing the service correctly.

Do it yourself and save money and get it done right.

Ive done all my own service on my 2004, its out of warrenty by 4 years, no problems.

Also, never had any problems with other bikes Ive owned. Dont let the dealer scare you with the warrenty crap, you wont need your warrenty anyway. Thats why you bought a zuke and not a harley.

I bought my DL650 as a disposable bike for a 3 month trip to Alaska. I was fully invested that I would destroy this bike. In 20K+ miles I changed the oil once. I took this bike all the way to the artic ocean....and all the way back to SC. When I got back to SC, this bike ran just as good as the day we left for our grand tour. I checked the valves (first time) at 26K miles, and they were still in range. I ran this bike to the hilt for 3 months in the worst conditions you can imagine. I never missed a lick.
