Mostly it's just something to keep the winter blues away, but I'm planning one of many trips that I'm going on this summer and think a UP trip is something I'm going to do. I'll be coming from South/Central Indiana. Any suggestions on must see/must ride places or roads?

Anywhere in da U.P. is awesome. Riding from southern Indiana, I'd ride up US 31/131 through the L.P. up to Mackinac. The L.P. has some great roads/scenery particularly in the northern 3rd. A good diversion is Mackinac Island if you've never been there. Ride US 2 along the southern shorline, you won't be disappointed. The real must see is Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore; all I can say is bring your camera. I hope this helps.

The Porcupine Mountains are beautiful anytime of year! Western Side of the U.P. on near Silver City which is next to Lake Superior. It's all beautiful up there. Wish I could go with. I grew up in Ironwood, which is right on the Wisconsin Michigan border. If you go through Ironwood, get a pastie, (meat pie), at Joe's Pasty shop in downtown Ironwood! I'm taking the cage up there in 2 weeks to visit my folks! Wish I could take my Strom!

Have fun and keep us posted as to how it goes!!!

Definately do the Porcupine Mtn thing. Truly awesome. Also wind your way up to the town of Gay. Only 26 people in the town but a nice bar to kick back and relax. It is at the very top of western UP on Hwy 26. Follow the road north at about 85mph and just enjoy the winding road. Turn on Hwy 41 and continue the adventure. No dissappointments.

I grew up in the Sault area. When you cross the bridge I would recomment the road along Lake Superior known as the Curly Lewis Highway. Just a two laner but follows the lake and is beautiful. Twisty and fun. Ends at the Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point which is also worth a visit. Lots of places to pull over and watch the waves and walk the beach.

You are also close to the Tahquamenon Falls which is worth a stop if you have never been there.

Good Luck.

If you end up going, and want some company, let me know. I'm in South West Michigan and am looking to do a trip to the U.P.

with 6 other bikes. What a good time. We left from Chicago to Milwaukee. Took the high speed ferry to Muskegon. From there we went up the west side of Michigan, Traverse City (You HAVE TO go along rt 119 near Traverse City), to Mackinac. Crossed the Mackinac Bridge into the UP and came down across the UP and Wisconsin. 5 days, about 1100 miles. All in all a great trip.

You can email me and I can give you some more details and some sites I can suggest.

Nico, found 119 did you? Shhhhh that is one of the best kept secrets of Michigan's LP. The best road the LP has AFAIK.

Was the ferry motorcycle friendly? I have considered taking it next trip to SD to avoid the Chicago area.
