Long Ride Evaluation of Sargent Seat

I just took the same 1500 mile trip that I took last year with the gel seat. This time I had a Sargent seat.

The trip included two 650 mile days on the slab. Here's my rating.

The Sargent seat is good for about 500 miles. Then you have to get off every hour for a while. Initially, for the first 300 miles or so, it is more comfortable than the extremely hard and flat gel seat. Then, the inability to move about on the seat like you can with the gel seat started to catch up.

So... Overall I give the Sargent seat a slightly higher rating than the gel seat, mostly because of its narrow front end that allows me to put both feet flat on the ground (30" inseam). I only ride more than 500 miles per day a few times a year. Maybe I'll change seats for those days.

Thanks for the post. I've started thinking about a new saddle and have been reading anything I could find on the different options. If the Sargent is only "slightly" better than the OEM Gel for about 2x the price that makes the decision much easier for me. I'm also looking for a slightly taller saddle, not a shorter one.

In that case, the gel seat may be just what you need. It is very spacious. You can move forward and back, left and right without restriction. The front is wide and there is almost no dip or downward angle toward the front.

I'm told that the gel pad gets (and stays) damned hot if left out in the sun. I put a towel over the seat when I stop to avoid that.

Yeah I've heard the same thing and was thinking the Alaskan sheepskin buttpad would help with that too.

I had a Sargent for about 1000 miles and although it was a nice seat, it just didn't work well enough to justify keeping it so I returned it within their 30-day return period.

I now have the gel seat and it does have a lot more room to move around. With either beads or the sheepskin, it's even better.
