I went with the Hepco & Becker Journey 40 liter (got mine from Adventurersworkshop.com). Large enough to hold a full face helmet and my daughter says the backrest pad is fine. The case is $150, mount is around $90, took 10 minutes to install:

I just put a Givi V46 on my DL650. It looks great and holds 2 helmets. The case itself makes a pretty good backrest as is, but a back cushion for the topcase is available. My nephew is 10 and says it doesn't bother him without the back cushion. The Givi is more expensive and takes a bit longer to install, but I really like it.

Congrats on the new bike!

I'm just a much younger 45 year old kid. I got my DL650 less than two weeks ago. I just put the Givi E52 Maxia on mine along with the E41 sidecases.

I haven't actually carried anyone on it yet but my wife sat on the back and said it was comfortable without the backrest. I've heard the backrest makes the passenger sit a bit too far forward.

I was considering the V46 but decided on the larger E52. I wanted the extra brakelights (that little stock light just doesn't grab your attention) and the E52 could be ordered with the lights installed cheaper than buying the kit and doing it yourself. It wasn't much more than getting the V46 and the lightkit separately.
