I'll be passing through next Wednesday morning on my way to Lubbock and was looking for a little diversion on route.
Just looking at the map, this (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=16016392300330611464,36.423300,-103.159590%3B5835174246406445390,35.611483,-102.217614%3B15141204419754391010,35.447206,-102.221498%3B8642436965295958142,33.615530,-101.835910%3B16047066299651513931,33.615570,-101.844330&saddr=US-87+S+%4036.423300,+-103.159590&daddr=Unknown+road+%4035.611483,+-102.217614+to:35.543122,-102.265892+to:Unknown+road+%4035.447206,+-102.221498+to:Unknown+road+%4033.615530,+-101.835910+to:I-27+S+%4033.615570,+-101.844330&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=2&sz=12&via=1,2,3,4&sll=35.483877,-102.165298&sspn=0.145931,0.276031&ie=UTF8&ll=35.335293,-102.279968&spn=1.169589,2.208252&t=p&z=9) (look at the section from Channing to Ady) looks like it might be ok.
What do you suggest.

27 south of Amarillo is brutal. Flat, straight, windy and miserable, IMHO.
Find a smaller road and get of the interstate. Won't cost you that much time. Last time I was up that way I left 27 at Happy and rode out to Lake MacKenzie?? Beautiful little canyons out there.
Got time to go to Shallowater? NewEnough is there. Worth the trip if you need gear.
Don't know if it'll help, but here is a link to my Panhandle ride:

Thanks for the link, Nice ride report.
Friends of mine inherited and restored the Hotel Turkey. They put an incredible amount of effort into that place.

Anybody know anything about this little stretch just north west of Amarillo?

I may explore it on the way.

I'm familar with 1061 but not that road. I see it in MapSource but it has no markings. No indication of it in The Roads of Texas. Probably a county road? You might check Google maps (satellite) to see if you can get any more clues.
Good luck!

That road between Channing and Amarillo will be good. I think it's referred to the as the Boys ranch road. A lot better than going through Dumas. Just after the Boys ranch you will see it on you left when coming south. Also, the loop takes you around Amarillo without having to deal with much traffic. I've done the road in my truck several times on trips out North for work. It has pretty scenery and curves to boot.
I-27 to Lubbock will be uneventful heading south. If I were you I would jump on I-40 and go east to hwy 207. It's all back roads and will take you down through a couple of canyons (great views there), but it's flat other than that. It will be 20 miles out of Amarillo to Claude. Turn south on 207. You can turn west after the canyons and head back to I-27 from there pretty easy. The last one is Lake Mackenzie. There are several FM roads that will take you back. The easiest if toward Tulia after the lake (ride dirt bikes there) If not you can continue all the way to Ralls on 114 and ride that in the Lubbock. 2 strait sections after Sliverton. It would add roughly 40 miles or so to you trip.
