I am moving for California to Florida in July and was wondering if "Lane Splitting" is legal in Florida :? ? I will be riding cross-country primarly on Interstate 10 so information on "Lane Spitting" in the states along the way will also be appreciated.
I am in the Navy and the bases in which I could be located at are in Jacksonville Florida 8) , Brunswick Maine :( , Whidbey Island Washington :( , and Kanaohe Hawaii 8) . Any information on these states for motorcycle laws, like lane splitting, head/tail light mogulators, and modifications(safety inspections, exhaust) could save me a ticket and hastle for "Johnny Law" .

P3 guy huh. ;-)

Having been stationed in Brunswick and Whidbey (still living on Whidbey), I can safely say that lane splitting is not legal in either.

Brunswick is in Maine, so helmets are optional, but in WA they are mandatory.

The riding season in ME is about 5 months long on a good summer. In WA, you can ride year round if you're willing to get wet. I know a guy who commutes from Everett, WA to NAS Whidbey...only missed 2 days last year because of snow.

I don't think Lane-Splitting is legal in any state but CA, but some of the states may enforce it less.

Good luck on your search.

I grew up in Hawaii and can tell you some information reguarding riding there. Firstly lane splitting is NOT legal, big ticket item even though the cops do it all the time. (with the traffic on oahu you will be tempted though) Helmets are optional but eye protection is required (shades are acceptible.) speed limit max on H2 is 55 mph and for most other freeways the max speed is 50. Head light an tail light modulators I have seen on bikes but I am not too sure on theit legality. there is a yearly state safety inspection that will cost you arround 15$ but if you go to the right shops is is more a fee for them puting a sticker on the bike. I have passed without even starting the bike or turning on any lights.

if you need more info bout hawaii let me know!

Worthless. No redeeming value to a program like that. Pure money maker for the state and its contractors. Connecticut had one like that for automobiles (not bikes). Nebraska did away with that, but we get nailed hard with annual property tax and registration fees.

I hate to tell you, but I read recently in Rider magazine that California is the only state in the country that allows lane-splitting.

I have lived in (or very near) Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Missouri, Illinois and now Texas and I can tell you that while helmet laws will very from state to state (you can Google "helmet laws" for a couple sites that tell you which/where), lane-splitting is pretty much against the rules anywhere but crazy ol' CA.

Hi from the United Kingdom. You should get yourself a posting over the pond to England. Lane splitting ( we call it filtering) is legal throughout the UK, but we do have to be careful, as if we are in a collision we are held partly responsible.
Helmets are compulsory throughout the country but our speed limits are higher ( generally) and the roads twistier for more footpeg scraping fun!
Plus Winters are not so bad as some US states, as long as you can keep the rain out, a lot of people ride all year round.

Split lanes anywhere in Latin America. Only thing different than California is Latinos are the craziest drivers I have ever seen. Adds tremendously to the adventure of riding a motorcycle and competing with the "formula one driver wannabes" on the streets and roads. If you survive the traffic and all the rest of the hazards, you will have something really good to talk about for the rest of your life. I'm writing a book about our (Punky, Lew & Achi 2) adventure tour of North and South Americas. Planning to ride to Panama again in Feb. Later, amigos. Lew

Out here in Ontario, Canada, it is noted in our Morotcycle handbook that it is "extremely dangerous" but there isn't an explicit mention of it being illegal.
