:) Thanks for all the support for you Stromtroopers who have been getting your New Gold Chains, and Sprockets from me, I appreciate it.

The prices I quote on the first post are for the same High Quality Gold Chain Featuring the latest Generation in X-ring Technology and Sprockets that I use on my own bikes, including my Superbike Race Bike, on which I am using the same Chain and Sprockets on for the third full season.

It is the excellent quality product I demand for myself, and sourced for fellow Stromtroopers. In this case we have both a great price and really great quality.

Email me at b.layton@svracingparts.com and I will be happy to help you out right away.

You can always buy with confidence from me, I stand behind everything I sell.

So I just installed my chain last night. What a mess that sticky white grease is! Hopefully once the chain warms up, that melts a bit and doesn't stay so sticky!

Thanks again Blair.

This is a repost from another thread that I thought might go well here too:

"I changed my chain and front sprocket on Friday at about 20900 miles - but I should have done the chain sooner.

After reading horror stories about pins on chain tools breaking and the need to grind off the head of the rivet before trying to break it I was somewhat apprehensive about the process.

But the RK tool that I bought from Blair was perfect. I broke the old chain and the new one twice (was being overly cautious about not cutting it too small) without grinding anything and with no issues whatsoever. It also made splaying the rivets easy.

It is an expensive tool (to me) at $100 but I figure if I use it twice it's more than payed for itself. If my son keeps piling up the miles on his R6 I think I'll get a chance to use it again relatively soon. And the quality of the tool makes it look like it should last as long as both my son and I ride bikes.

You do get what you pay for and while there are cheaper alternatives out there to this noob this tool was exactly what I needed. It allowed me to do the job quickly, easily, and most important, properly."

Yeah...so grind the head first huh? Well that would be why the punch in my kit broke. Blair, any chance I can get a replacement pin? I was using the largest of the 3 provided in the kit and the tip broke off.

Blair, I've got a sproket question & a chain question for you.

My sproket question is; I've got an '07 Vee and the load on her "as usualy loaded" pushes 400#s. She's obviously got plenty of grunt but my MPG kinda sucks. I was wondering if anybody's tried jumping the front sproket +1, or the rear -1 on a Vee to increase MPG??? I know I'll lose a little snap off the line but she seems to have plenty in reserve.

My stock chain has a little over 16K on it so it's bound to be getting close to time and I've got a big Ozark Mountain ride scheduled late September so I'd rather get it changed soon and get everything broken in beforehand.

My chain question is; do you offer the MVX series chains with the Zero Stretch Tech in your kits as an option and would you reccomend it in my application?

Please advise.

THANKS!

I bought the chain, pair of sprockets and the tool from Blair. Thanks for the excellent communication and knowledgeable replies! I got the chain and sprockets swapped this weekend and put 100 miles on so far. The rear sprocket was SO much lighter, I was shocked when I held up the old and new to compare! Very nice quality machined parts on the chainbreaker tool.

All said and done it took this girl 3 hours and 45 minutes to replace my chain and both sprockets... I do have the center stand advantage... didn't even have to drop my trailer hitch! Oh, and I changed all 3 sets of brake pads at the same time. I did have to ask my #1 man to help me get to 105ftlbs on the cs sprocket. %^)

Thanks for offering the weestrommers a great price on quality components!

Very nice quality machined parts on the chainbreaker tool.

P.S. I did not grind the rivets on my chain - and upon a very thorough inspection of my chainbreaker it did not withstand ANY damage!

You were lucky. The pin has to be hardened to do the job and hardened steel is brittle. Checking carefully for damage isn't necessary, if there is a problem the pin will break right off. It may work 9 times out of ten but, the one time it breaks like in RedBean's case, you'll wish you had ground the end off.

Blair, as mentioned earlier, my Vee has plenty of get up & go but the MPG isn't the greatest and the speedo is 12%-13% ablove reality so I was wondering if I could bump up the front 1 tooth or drop the rear 1 or 2 teeth to make up the speedo difference, since the Vee's are trans speedo driven, and possibly gain a little MPG in the process.

Please advise.

THANKS!

The Vee is geared very tall to start with. You won't be able to use 6th in more situations if you go in that direction. Get a speedohealer.

I went up +1 in the front and I like it. RPMs dropped about 500 and my mileage incresed by at least 30 miles more per tank

I ordered the stock setup from Blair, which I received promptly, and installed myself.

Here are some pictures I took during the install, which comparison shots of what I can only assume are the stock sprockets. The bike has 43K on it, and this is the third chain, if the PO is to be believed.

http://picasaweb.google.com/ghoverkamp/VStromRepairsAndMods#5363345707565833954

Install was easy enough, once I got the bike off th ground. I borrowed an RK tool from a friend, because I can't really afford one myself.

The new sprockets felt lighter than the originals, and the chain looks great.

Just wondering what brand/type of lube people use on these chains? What works best?

Thanks Blair, good stuff.

Blair,

Do those gold chains resist rust any better than a standard colored chain ?

I use Maxima chain wax. never had any issues. Like said before, keep your chain cleaned and lubbed and it will last longer than the average chain

Big thanks to Blair for getting me set up with a 525 chain and a 43 tooth rear sprocket. He called me up the day after I sent my email, from a truck stop on his way to Alberta for a race, we talked about my riding style and the advantages that switching sprocket sizes and chains can afford me.

A few days later I was happily installing my new sprockets (17 front, 43 rear) and chain. In retrospect an extra link on the chain might have been advantagous as the larger rear sprocket makes for a tight stretch at 112. That is my own doing and just a thought for those of you thinking about making the leap to the larger rear sprocket.

Big ups to Blair for running a good service for us Strom riders...

The stock is 17 x 41 and the DL1000 runs 71 MPH (GPS) at 4,000 RPMs

If I change to 17 by 43 what would be the MPH at the same RPMs.

Reason for the questionable rear sprocket change: To keep the engine from chugging I find myself in 5th gear on the freeway.

TIA

Gearing Commander says 4000rpm with stock gearing yields 74.3 mph. They probably go with the speedo. A 43 tooth rear changes that to 70.8mph. Check out http://www.gearingcommander.com/ and play with different settings.

Thanks greywolf. Sure can tell those charts were designed by an engineer. I think I found out how to use the information and it increases the rpms by 170-184 rpms. I am currently getting 42 MPG (up from 39) and I am not sure if the rpm increase will affect the gas mileage.
