If anyone was thinking about modifying the stock seat I put together a how to. Seeing some pictures might lessen the intimidation factor, it is a fairly easy mod to do.

In hindsight: I should have spent more time evening up the seams. You can see in the duct tape picture the seams are pretty close but the left and right seams are slightly visible through the seat cover.

Unfortunately at the time my high speed die grinder was on a job so I had to use a slow speed hand drill. A finer grit might have been better. The slow speed plus the course grit had a tendency to dig into the foam while I was sanding.

Steve,

Nice post.

I bought a spare seat which I carved up for my wife.

It's a lot less intimidating if it's not your only seat.

I've been contemplating mofiying my own seat, I've really gotten used to it, plus I take care of my back.

I'd like to create a raised "pocket" about an inch back and up, but I think bar backs/risers are in order first, in which case I'll need a longer, braided, brake line at which point I begin to lose interest in the whole project.

I've been contemplating narrowing my set a bit and maybe taking about 1/2" of foam off to make me sit more in the bike.
