Using the Kaoko

I have got to be the biggest knucklehead :???: around for asking this, but I have to......how do I engage this thing? Installing it was no problem, and it's fully seated in the bar and everything, but I just can't seem to engage it worth a hoot.

Could somebody please describe their technique when engaging the Kaoko?

It's the "turning the knob" thing that throws me......do you use your pinky to roll it on, your whole hand, or what?

I don't have the throttle lock installed yet, but over at Advrider, I was told that all you have to do is use your pinkie to move the wheel 1/4 turn and the throttle will hold. Apparently we are supposed to 'calibrate' the tension before using it....don't know yet. I am sure Obi Wan Greywolf knows...let's ask him.

This is too funny... my bike came with one of these installed, the Kaoko, not the beer... and I can't seem to use it either. Hmmm.

Its not a bad idea to lube the inner threads on the Kaoko. Mine started to get really tight. I took it off and there was a fair bit of rust in it. Cleaned and with a little lube it works fine again. Oh, and I use my pinky.

My pinky just ain't up to the task, I suppose. :( And I can't see engaging the Kaoko as a two-handed operation either (gripping the throttle with the left hand while turning the Kaoko with the right).

I find it fairly easy to use. Before you even leave for a ride make sure you have it adjusted right.Adjust the "tightness" of the wheel with the small allen wrench. You want it snug enough that it won't vibrate loose when you have the cruise set. While sitting on the bike take and turn the top of your Kaoko wheel towards you until it gets close to the butt of your throttle grip. You don't want it to interfere with normal throttle action when not being used. Now pretend your are at speed and you want to use your cruise. While rolling off the throttle slide your whole hand over just enough to grip the Kaoko wheel and then roll back on the throttle and it will hold at your desired speed. Might take some practice but you will learn to really like it on those long trips.

+1, I just saw this thread and agree 100% with this. I have had several bikes that I put the Kaoko on all of them. I like them and they work well for me as described above.

Tucson, I bought it used from another 'Trooper. Installed it, played with it in my shed, did the "OMG, I'm an idiot!" thing, and removed it. Re-installed my NEP throttle lock, and never looked back. :D

For me the Kaoko is a two-handed affair. The adjustment screw won't stay where I set it. It get so loose that it vibrates real loose, so I have to really twist it, several times around the mulberry bush, to get it locked; and I can only do that with two hands.

I'm not overly impressed with the product, especially for the money.

You need to ride in the rain more. Get some crust, corrosion and corruption in there and you can throw away the set-screw altogether.
