Another V-Strom n00b here.
I'm currently on my first full year of riding, and I've started on a Ninja 250R. It's a fun little bike, really, and quite apt to my commuting around here in St. Paul. But of course, I've been looking for an upgrade at the end of the season, when dealers start clearing out their yearly stock before the winter. I plan on keeping my 250 (you can't mess with nearly 70mpg...) for commuting purposes, but I'd like a more highway/destroyed pavement (which Minnesota has a lot of) type of bike for non-commuting duties.

So I was looking at naked sports. Speed Fours, Z750Ses, Monsters... that sort of bike. But insurance for me is astronomical for even these - the Speed Four was cheapest at $2000 per year, including my 250R. Insurance companies don't like unmarried twenty-somethings very much.

While searching for info on the Suzuki SVs, I was reminded of the existance of the V-Strom. Interesting, I thought - there's no way my insurance companies could construe that as a sportbike! So I went to the online quoting on my insurance company and sure enough - $588 for full coverage for a whole year. Nice - I could actually afford to pay for insurance on a V-Strom 650 AND have enough money for gas!

So what should I expect moving from a 250R to a DL650 if I choose to do it? I notice my 250R gets tossed about on the highway by crosswinds quite a bit - does the DL do so as badly? What should one expect to pay for one, when it's all said and done? Are they easy to find discounts on?

Thanks for any help - now that I've "discovered" the DL650, I've really got a mind to grab one for myself when I have the money. They're sorta neat - and they're big! Wow! It's like three times as tall as my Ninja! Well, not quite, but it's a huge bike! I'm not large - 5'9" and 155 lbs... so this bike seems enormous to me. But I dig the bolt-upright seating position... neat bike!

I haven't noticed that the 6Fiddy gets pushed around in the wind anymore or less than another motorcycle of similar weight and "sail" area.

If anything, the front tends to get pushed a little by "truckwash"...(as a reuslt of the fairing and screen). . . . Not intolerable nor scary. I added aluminum panniers and the "push" I get on occasion is equal front and rear now as a result of the increased rear sail area.

I've seen (on other threads) where some owners really bitch about the crosswind movement of their Stroms....... And others like me don't seem to find it a major concern.

Have you ever ridden a large dirtbike? It is kinda like that only really smooth and much faster. I think that if you are really keen on the naked standards you will be ok with the strom. I was also looking at speed fours and SV's when I bought the strom. I had ridden my Yam. v-star 650 for 2 seasons. It didn't get pushed around on the road near as much as the stom....BUT it was 600+ lbs and sat really low. I am not scared by the wind I just notice it more. All the wind issues (like windscreen bufetting) are not that bad.

If you can, find a dealer that will let you take a ride on one. I did and the next week I was riding it home. :D

By the way, I hear there is a fairly large bike culture in the Twin Cities. Have you noticed that?

Thanks for the info, guys!

Believe me, however the DL650 gets pushed around on the road by wind couldn't be half as bad as a 300-lb Ninja 250 with a full sail... I mean, fairing.

Bike culture in the Twin Cities is here, but not very hardcore. Lots of people who just ride for liesure or whatever, but on days like this where the high is barely 50 degrees, very few people are out. Lots of folks can afford them as toys, but don't go out of their way to pursue the hobby when it might be a little too cold or wet. I ride as much as I can, and can begin commuting again once my garage is finally done! Driving is just so damn... boring!

Tons of baby boomers on big cruisers and tons of kids on those guided road missiles, but it's only occasionally that I see sport tourers or adventure bikes. That's another plus for the V-Strom for me - the "WTF!!??" factor you can get from folks. ;o)

I'll have to look around for dealerships that offer test rides. I can't think of any around here that still do. I'll test-sit them, and probably buy one from somewhere else. Most of our dealers around here are intent on getting list, MSRP price for anything they sell. I see there's a place in Missouri that has them for $5800... I could just make a road trip one weekend.

I've never ridden dirtbikes at all, so that analogy is a bit out of my league. But I can imagine it, I think. And the windscreen buffeting that I hear people talk about isn't of any concern to me. Any buffeting that could possibly put up is less than the face full of wind I get from my Ninja at 70mph!

I think I'll try to go out tomorrow afternoon and do a test-fit. Then I've just gotta sell my Mazda, and I'll be set for a new bike at the end of the year, once I pile on a couple more thousand miles on the 250...

Thanks for the advice thus far, guys!

I just got my DL650 a couple of weeks ago and I love it. The wind is not that bad as long as you are not driving in a full gale. If your not pretty tall it may feel really high to you. I like it because it reminds me of my dirt bike days. I am very happy with mine and it took me a long time to decide. You can't beat the insurance costs.
