i found a pic on the web of my second motorcycle ever, a 100 cc bultaco sherpa s, circa 1973 (i believe). my first bike was a 60 cc yamaha mini enduro, but i had long legs as a kid, and my knees kept hitting the handlebars in turns.

That is awesome. My family was a big fan of the bultacos. my dad and his brother still talk about them. They both raced motocross
If you dont mind I found a pic of the first bike I ever owned.

That isnt me in the pic. just found it on the web. but the bike was the same. this was the first bike that was mine.
My dad and I worked on that bike more than I ever got to ride it.
(translation: dad worked on it exclusively while I held tools and asked countless questions. I was 7 :) )

yeah, it was cool. 15 horsepower! that was a real screamer in it's day. of course it tended to break down ... a lot ...

I had a Sherpa T in the late 70's
It was "The" trials bike at that time.
As I recall the blue one was a special world champ addition for Bernie Schreiber.
It was a brute. It ran good but if you let the revs drop too low it would start running backwards and throw you over the bars :(

I too found my first bikes pic on the net, and a pristine example at that.
A rupp mini bike
I remember thinking it was cool because it had a gas tank like a "real" motorcycle.

A buddy of mine just sold an XL-250 for $900. The bike ran great but needed TLC. It had a 23" front tire.
My brother in law has an XL-185. It has around 2000 miles. He took it to Colorado 2 years ago. Here is a pic. His brother had the BMW.

Guess while i'm here i'll post a borrowed pic of my "first". It was a 79? yamaha mx 100 that taught me all i wanted to know about $150.00 motorcycles and bad chains. On the other hand it provided 2 years of hardcore trail wandering and hundreds of on road miles. We lived in the middle of nowhere and the cops were few. No helmet and little sense but man was it fun.

Cool...My favorite feature was the "auto-mix", complete with oil resevoir under the seat. I thought it was so ahead of its time:)
My first 'real" bike a 1971 TS90 (purchased in 1972). I can't count how many idle adjuster screws I broke from the side mounted rotary valve carb.
Of course mine was the "faster" Red colour!

Are you sure that's a Sherpa? If memory serves the Sherpa was their trials bike. That looks more like a Pursang, the motocross version. I had a couple of 250 Pursangs (serially, not consecutively). Also had an Alpina (the semi-trials dirt bike) and one brother briefly had a Metralla (the road racer/dirt-track bike). Was glad to go to a Yamaha, that had ignition that allowed it to start, and brakes that allowed it to stop.

technically, it's a "Sherpa S." there were 100, 125 and 175 varieties. the pursang series started at 250. i can't remember what they called their trials bikes. maybe they were considered part of the sherpa series.
yup ... i'm sure. you never forget your first real race bike. ;)

This was my first bike, and I am proud to say I actually survived on it lol. The CB500t was absolutely horrible now that I look back on it decades later, but at 18 I was too young to notice or even care..I had a motorcycle lol. The thing went through so many head gaskets I called it "the Greaser" because oil was constantly shooting out of the gasket leaks. I seriously had to wear rain pants in order to prevent oil stains on my jeans riding to college every day.
