This gets brought up constantly, old man's (woman) young rider, etc bike.
Just what age is the "average age" Lets do a poll.

You will notice that 66-70 is the last option. This is because the poll can only handle so many choices.

Well, I am 68 and so now there are two respondents in that bracket.
Actually I bought the V Strom 650 because I did not want to wrestle with a 670 pound Kawasaki Concours any more. I also have a BMWR1150RT. However, I am so happy with the V Strom that I am thinking of selling the BMW also.

No surprise to me to see the Strom generally appeals to older riders. Let the young guys with strong backs and less developed imaginations have the crotch rockets and allow the newbies and less informed the Hardleys.

The Strom is obviously appreciated by riders with some serious miles under their butt. My 650 has to be counted as one of the best over-all bikes I've owned. Some say it's ugly, and quite honestly the ass end of the 650 does make it look like the motorcycle version of the Aztek, but it gets better looking every time I ride - and I've been doing that long enough to know what I want. I've owned a couple dozen bikes over the last 37 years of riding so that makes me.. uh.. 50! Holy CRAP! how did THAT happen???

38 here. I've ridden dirt bikes since I was probably 9 or so. Raced amateur/semi-pro motocross for about 6 years but after having back surgery last year do to a damaged disc, I didn't feel comfortable getting back on and riding like I wanted to. Understand that in 30 years of riding I have never owned a street bike and had only ridden two or three that friends had. Anyway, decided it was time so I took the MSF course, and started shopping. Went to various dealers of all makes and ended up seeing a blue DL650 that looked like what I wanted. Bought it the next day and couldn't be happier.

26 with a DL650.

I think the thing is that it doesn't seem to be a well advertised bike, so the young'ns who make rush decisions don't know about it.

Plus, they're not as widely seen as things such as crotch rockets and cruisers.

Got my Strom just a few months before hitting the big 30. First bike was an SV650S at age 28, and the Strom seemed like a very natural progression when I wanted something more comfy and slightly less sporty.

I still ride a "spirited" pace and ride the Strom like it IS a sport bike, but I'm not cramped up afterwards!

The majority of owners, according to the poll, are between 31 and 55. That's a pretty broad age group to be lumping into "old man". At 31, or even 38, I wasn't thinking of myself as an old man; I'm just getting there now! (OK, since you asked, into my 50's.) Keep in shape and you'll be alright!

Water Warrior, you're too funny!

Well, the 4C planning is coming along sloooowly not only b/c of all the plans in progress that precede that ride but b/c my riding partner for the 4C run (yes, the 72yo!) and I have decided to take a more "traditional" approach to the planning of it. We've decided to put away mapping programs and GPS and such, opting instead for word of mouth and talking to locals. Interacting and building relationships w/people versus relying on electonics... what a concept, huh? To make it even more interesting we've decided to do a National Parks tour at the same time as the 4 Corner tour. Would it be surprising if I said I like challenges? BTW, wanna join along for a bit when we get to Canada?

Stromette, before anything else here is a warning. The Sept 4th Monday is a statutory holiday here and the last long weekend of the summer. That means everyone is trying to get out and have fun. Lots of traffic, lots of dummies out there making up for lost time. One last weekend before the kids go back to school.
If I remember correctly you will be travelling east to west in the GWN and assuming you will be on the Trans Canada Hiway ( # 1 ) coming across the prairies. That will put you in Calgary Alberta and headed to the Rockies and Banff Alberta, (Banff National Park). From there you could go north to Jasper (Jasper National Park) on hiway #93. It is a beautiful drive and an even better ride. About 200 miles of paved road and terrific scenery. From there you could ride west to British Columbia. Follow # 16 to Tete Jaune Cache, follow # 5 to Kamloops. From there I travel west on #97 to Cashe Creek and then head north about 8 miles to a junction for # 99 and head west again. From there it gets better and better. #99 will lead you to Vancouver eventually, after visiting Pemberton, Whistler and Squamish(home). Stomette, get a good road map and take a look at the route, it is all paved and a great trip to my thinking but you may want to travel an entirely different road(there are many choices overall). There are also great routes travelling across the Rockies farther south by just riding southwest from Banff on # 93.
I envy you doing the 4 C's, sounds great. Get maps and surf the net a bit. Hopefully other riders will kick in and make suggestions too. But these are some of my favorite roads and there are still many I need to explore. Ride On, Ride Safe.

I was 43 when I got back into biking with the XR last year and 44 when I bought the Wee this spring.

Both make me feel like a 20-year old kid (on a KL-250) again... The XR takes me re-exploring the local back roads, snow machine trails and gravel pits while the Wee's gonna re-acquaint me with the Trans-Canada and local secondary highways this summer. Lots of lake country to explore up here.

Just got my 2006 650 as a 40th birthday present to myself, thinking it was time to slow down and enjoy the scenery. But the scenery is still blurry. This thing isn't slowing me down at all. In fact, the extra ground clearance and smoothness of the engine are making me go a little faster than I did on my previous bike, a Honda Hornet 600. Getting old isn't so bad, with bikes like this to ease the pain.

Still counting the days to the big 4-oh, in July, but saw the bike histories of others and thought I'd include mine. The Strom is the 25th bike I've actually owned, but my father and brother had bikes that I used more than them at times. Anyway, here's a shortened list. There seems to be a pattern of bouncing between dual-sports and tourers that finally got resolved with the Strom. They're listed chronologically.

1969 Honda QA 50
6 MX bikes in my youth
1982 IT 175
1978 XT 500
1979 Twin Star 185
1981 Seca 550
1982 Seca 650
1984 Nighthawk 650
1984 VF 1100F
1984 XL 350
1986 XT 350
1993 XR 650 L
1988 Concours
1994 KX 250

1999 CB 600F

Yes, and if you ride without your head up your ass, you, too, will someday be an old fart. I'm 58 and don't have a scratch on me from street riding. Back in the 70s, though, I broke an inch and half sapling with my chest and crotch when I hit a foot of swamp muck at about 30 mph on a dual sport and was highsided into the tree. It smarted, but I got up smiling and rode for another hour. This was in April in northern Minnesota with the temps just above freezing. I thought the mud was still frozen!

I was driving down the road the other day still plagued by the buffeting problem, this after buying the taller one from the dealer. I found that if I bent the windshield towards me everything was clear. So I said to myself what the heck. I used a burner out of a little tail gate propane grill. With a little patience I was able to slope the windshield backwards. There is some distortion through the bent part, but my helmet is in clean air and all is happy in the world. Here are some pictures for you. It could have been done a little better because there is fine line between too much and not enough heat. I admit I did warp it a little in one spot. But with a little more care this could have been avoided. Here are the pictures.

Have the kids here even heard of Archie, Veronica, and Gopher? I did get an early chance to use a browser because Mosaic was developed at the University of Illinois and I worked at the UofI in Chicago. The last five years I worked there was 100% time in hardware development and software writing. Now I help people online, including the younger generation, who can't get their TV equipment to work properly.

I turned 59 in July a couple of weeks after I bought my DL650. I signed the purchase papers on my 15th wedding anniversary, felt guilty so went out and bought a her a diamond. She thought buying the bike was great!

Probably the best thing I have done for myself in several years was getting my V-Strom. I never have really ever felt "old" but must admit some of my parts are starting to show signs of wear. I have been having such a blast riding a bike again after about a 25 year layoff. :D Have put on about 9,000Km over the wonderful summer we have just had. Last winter the weather was quite rideable well into December with a only a couple of snowy patches in between. Hopefully it will be the same this year.

I use the internet a lot and am a technical analyst (computer tech) for a College that uses Distance Learning to cover thousands of square miles of service area. I also look after a couple of websites and private networks. I can't see myself retiring any time soon. But I did buy a lottery ticket yesterday so anything is possible.

I have tentative plans to take the V-Strom out on the wonderful roads of BC next summer and visit a Sister, Brother, (who said he would show me some great rides with his BMW), and eldest Daughter who are all misplaced Albertans out there.

This heartens me for a couple of reasons:

1) It's clear the V-Strom is the motorcycle of choice for mature MOTORCYCLISTS who aren't buying a bike becaue they are going through a mid-life crisis. (Too bad, Ducat and Harley dealers.)

Lets see, 56, riding for 31 years and have owned 13 bikes. Everyone was a keeper, just wish I had done so. I prefer to call the V-Strom an adult motorcycle and to the question as how an old guy on a geezer bike can embarass kids on sportbikes on a twisty road? By the time we've gotten to this point in our riding career some of us have actually learned how to ride. Age and treachery will beat youth and enthusiasm any day.

When I bought my 650 in May I asked my dealer what kind of folks bought V-Stroms. He said he sold most of this stroms to people between 40 and 50 years old who were established in life and had a sense of adventure. The demographics of this survey so far seem to indicate that he was right :D

I am 46 this year and just got back to riding after 6 years away from it. I had back surgery 3 years ago and did not know if I would be able to get back on one again. I needed a good upright riding position and this year I had to start comuting 73 miles round trip aday to work. I did alot of research and thanks to this site and a couple of others I went and looked, rode and bought my new DL1000 K7. I have had it almost 3 months now and tonight it rolled over 5600 miles already. Love the bike and thanks to all the info here I made the right choice in a new bike to get me going again!

56 and woke up above ground this morning, took a 2 week, 6500 mile trip to the Montana/Canadian border this summer on the 05 DL650. My buddy (58) and I met the young guys there (had the sense to trailer). I would suspect that V Strom people are a bit long in the tooth.

15 !!!! Very Cool !!!!

I was 15 and had a two stroke 175cc enduro (1976). Back then you could ride a motorcycle in Florida at 15 with just a learners license ( 20hp or less). I rode that hing EVERYWHERE. I even rode it to school every day.
You on the other hand get to ride a 650cc bike at 15 !! You are so much more lucky than I was. Just be careful, have fun and enjoy the ride !!!

Ya its really fun. My dad has a Harley. He tried to convince me to get a harley sportster. i talked him out of it. Best bike i ever bought. i love this bike. Im only 110lbs. (i dont gain weight easily) and this bike flys. i beet my friend at the drag strip he had a cbr 600. had some mods done to it. It was the 1/8 mile. my best time was a 7.8. My bike is completely stock. I ride to skool everyday. Its cool because everybody is so curious what kind of bike it is. When i went to the strip i pulled up to the tree and everybody was lookin at me thinkin thats a slow bike and when i pulled a 7.8 i was comin bak to where u line up i could tell everybody was really supprised how quick this bike is.

Please take a MC safety course. They will surprise even the older guys w/ many 1,000s of miles behind them. The slow ride training is actually fun & will enable anyone to learn more about their bike while on it.

My 17 yr old son talked me into riding again after almost a 30 year hiatus. He wanted a bike and finally I got tired of listening to him whine. I told him if he rides I need to ride with him for awhile. After looking at used cruisers, he should me the Vstrom and it was love at first sight. I could not get the Wee out of my mind. I finally gave in and had one delivered last week. I am going on 56. This bike may get me to retire early. If can get all the farkles.

Hehehe, considering our average age many of you will appreciate this...

This is how Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder manifests itself :

I decide to water my garden.
As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide my car needs washing.
As I start toward the garage, I notice that there is mail on the porch table that I brought up from the mailbox earlier.
I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car.
I lay my car keys down on the table, put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table, and notice that the can is full.
So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the garbage first.
But then I think, since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I take out the garbage anyway, I may as well pay the bills first.
I take my checkbook off the table, and see that there is only one check left.
My extra checks are in my desk in the study, so I go inside the house to my desk where I find the can of Coke that I had been drinking.
I'm going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the Coke aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over.
I see that the Coke is getting warm, and I decide I should put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.
As I head toward the kitchen with the Coke a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye--they need to be watered.
I set the Coke down on the counter, and I discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for all morning.
I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the flowers.
I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water and suddenly I spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table.
I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, I will be looking for the remote, but I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I'll water the flowers.
I pour some water in the flowers, but quite a bit of it spills on the floor.
So, I set the remote back down on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill.
Then I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do.

At the end of the day:
the car isn't washed
the bills aren't paid
there is a warm can of Coke sitting on the counter
the flowers don't have enough water
there is still only one check in my check book
I can't find the remote
I can't find my glasses
I don't remember what I did with the car keys.

Then when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all day long, and I'm really tired.

I realize this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for it, but first I'll check my e-mail.

When on the bike I am a giggling teenager again which, depending on your point of view, may be a good or bad thing. All I know is that when I come back from a ride my face hurts from the smile plastered across it. In point of fact I am 57 and have been riding since I was 25 and plan do do so until I no longer can. When non riders ask why I reply that its just something I like to do. There is no explaing it to those who don't "get it". Bike people are just different and I'm glad they are.

Right on WW! Been to Squamish once, way back in 1978 on a ride across the Pemberton Meadows. Have kicked myself in the ass ever since for leaving BC. Haven't been back since 1982 for a ride from Salmon Arm to Prince Rupert on a borrowed bike. Closest I've been is Yellowstone with my buddy from Salmon Arm two years ago. Hope to make it back sometime before I hang it up for good.
